The L.A. City Council is considering putting a special tax on medical marijuana collectives, however the voters will have the final say. Today the Council is expected to be presented with the City Attorney's recently issued report on the tax measure, and they are being recommended to adopt the resolution and have the proposition put on the March 8th, 2011 ballot.

Medical Marijuana Advocates Won't Get Referendum on Ballot
In the hopes of getting a referendum on the ballot to counter the city ordinance that will bring about the closing of hundreds of dispensaries in L.A., a group of medical marijuana advocates had until the end of yesterday to collect 27,425 valid signatures, according to the Daily News. But the coalition, headed by Mar Vista's The Rainforest Collective's Daniel Halbert, only came up with about 15,000.
Long Beach Passes Tweaked Medical Marijuana Ordinance
L.A. County's second largest city last night passed a medical marijuana ordinance that, like with Los Angeles, is steeped in controversy. The city council had previously approved an ordinance, but last night's vote enlarged buffer zones around schools and forces collectives to grow within city limits, according to the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

As of February last year, the city of Laguna Woods was the only one in Orange County to allow dispensaries, a law voted on in late 2008. Back then, the LA Times reported that seniors were still awaiting a willing landlord to house the collective, one of the requirements on Laguna Woods' ordinance.
