Straining my eyes in the gloom of the Orpheum Theater last Friday, I came to the astonishing conclusion that the guitars that the Crystal Antlers were holding must be purely decorative. Pulverized by the ferocious drumming, heavy bass, and the lead singer's screaming, the guitars faded to a whimper. "They sound like they've got a pillow over them," my friend remarked, "They're all drums and cymbals." Truer words were never spoken. Although I kind of wish the pillow had been over the lead singer's mouth. Piercing your audience's eardrums with wails of passion are never the way to go, sir. With the exception of their song Andrew in which they slowed down and allowed for the interesting piano chords and guitar licks to actually emerge, most of the Crystal Antlers' show was muffled in a blanket of drumming and screams.

"Grapevine Fires" was inspired by lead singer and guitarist Ben Gibbard's up-close-and-personal encounter with 2007's California wildfires. Death Cab For Cutie's mesmerizing new animated music video "Grapevine Fires" is directed by Walter Robot (a.k.a. the team of multimedia artist Bill Barminski and writer Christopher Louie). The song was included on "Change is Now: Restoring America's' Promise" the official commemorative CD-DVD set celebrating President Barack Obama's inauguration.
Tonight we find Los Angeles amidst a flurry of relatively pedestrian shows, including local indie rock heavyweights the Cold War Kids (LAist Review), who just concluded their stop by KCRW a few short minutes ago, New York City-based electro-pop masterminds Brazilian Girls (LAist Interview) and Swedish rock band the Hives. If you're as bummed as we are about Glasser's cancellation of their gig at the poorly-lit dive 3 of Clubs, then get your dose of underground greatness elsewhere. Aaron Embry of AmniOn's "solo" performances have steadily garnered him wide acclaim. Acknowledged as a musical genius by many, Embry actually played keys for Elliott Smith before Smith's untimely death. He'll be playing the Tangier Restaurant in Los Feliz. But the lineup at Spaceland tonight intrigues us most. Specifically, Obi Best. Or rather Alex Lilly, who can generally be found singing back-ups for the Bird and the Bee. Lilly has penned a whimsical new record that rivals, if not exceeds, the Bird and the Bee's sing-song brand of saccharine pop.
In considering the Cold War Kids' latest offering, Loyalty to Loyalty, it is best to start from the beginning. On the strength of three incredibly energetic and raw EPs -- accompanied by live performances that kicked the doors down of Spaceland, the Echo, etc. -- the band rose from relative obscurity to headlining mid-major sites and spots on national television.
Love ‘em or hate ‘em, music festivals are the dim sum of the concert-going experience; try a little of everything and go back for more of what you like (or ditch out on what you don’t). This year’s Coachella was no exception, with acts like country crooner Dwight Yoakam vying for time against dance-rock lovelies Hot Chip, or Prince breaking down the funk for the masses after a particularly breathtaking Portishead set. With the desert heat not as heart-stopping as previous years and the lineup eclectic as it was educational, Coachella brought out all ages and backgrounds of super fans and the uninitiated alike. People-watching was good but people-listening was at an all time high, so I took advantage of all the close quarters on Saturday to do a little eavesdropping.
Members of the Towne Street Theatre are on stage tonight in a double bill. First is The 10 Minute Play Festival, which features plays ranging from comedy to satire to drama brought to you by 23 actors and 9 director. Second is PassingSOLO, a one-woman show based on their play version of Nella Larsen's 1927 novella Passing. There will be a talkback after every show.
The LA Times reports that local indie stalwarts Dim Mak Records has made a deal with Downtown Music (Gnarls Barkley, Cold War Kids, Art Brut, Justice) in which Dim Mak will continue to discover and develop new artists, and Downtown will give them that boost in distribution and promotion that Dim Mak has never been fortunate enough to be able to offer. Sounds like a deal that could make everyone happy.
The moment has finally materialized: The official lineup for the three-day mega music fest in the middle of nowhere (aka Empire Polo Field in Indio) has been announced.
We Barbarians, the Long Beach locals who recently played on tour with the Cold War Kids, begin their Silverlake Lounge Residency tonight. And we fully approve.

After touring extensively for the past year one of these bands returned home for the first time in about that long. Under The Influence Of Giants returned home to Los Angeles to the El Rey Thursday Night.

I'm Tivo-ing Mary Lynn Rajskub (Chloe from 24) on Conan tonight because it's the only new TV worth watching. Did you know Mary Lynn used to be David Cross' girlfriend? Did you know she's starring in a full-length comedy show at the Steve Allen Theater? Go see her Sunday, Apr. 15 @ 8:00pm, it's like $5 or $10 or something, pocket change.

It’s difficult to argue that KCRW, 89.9 FM, isn't one of the better things we, the citizens of Los Angeles, get to experience firsthand. Yeah, the station offers podcasts and streaming radio, but it’s not the same as actually living in the city the station is broadcast from. Not only does the station play some of the most innovative and unique music in the world, but broadcasts daily news and cultural information unable to...

There are really only two major music festivals that truly matter, like really matter: Coachella and South by Southwest. The former happens over two three days in the desert near Palm Springs, the latter rages for about a week on the dusty streets of Austin, Texas. SXSW features over 1,000 bands. You buy a wristband and you wander from bar to bar, club to club, alleyway to patio and you get to see some...
We admit it. We love year-end Best Of lists. Why? We think lists by a variety of people are a far better way to see trends and discover new acts than say award shows or sales charts. If it weren't for Best Of lists it's rare that you'd hear so much about TV on the Radio, The Cold War Kids, The Hold Steady, Joanna Newsum, or the Knife - and who knows, maybe it's...
OK so last night's Colbert/Decembrist Green Screen thing wasn't such a great premise but the line-up was incredible. Due to non-existent new programming somebody here suggested that I occupy my time with porn, but this is the TV Junkie spot, not the Porn Junkie spot, I'm not sure that the LAist editorial staff want that to happen yet, and no one has stepped forward to start supplying me with said porn yet either --...
The Mere Mortals, who LAist has written about before, continues to climb up the charts despite being unsigned. Their self-made "Rebel Radio" EP continues to rise on the FMQB album chart , one that tracks national airplay on new music radio shows. Currently the Mere Mortals are #3, just behind And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead 's "So Divided" (Interscope), and The Kooks' "Inside In/Inside Out (Astralwerks). They're outpacing such...
