With gusty winds that could reach 70 MPH expected to last into tonight, the I-5's Grapevine section has been reeling from dangerous driving conditions since early this morning.     While there are some clearing conditions now in the skies above Los Angeles, a night and morning of heavy rains has caused serious damage to homes and property as well as created hazardous road conditions all over the area. Road closures include the 2 Freeway which is closes from 2 mi east of the 210 in La Cañada-Flintridge to Islip Saddle (LA Co.); SR 27/Topanga Canyon Blvd closed from SR 1 to Topanga Canyon Road; and the transition road from the SB 110 Freeway to the NB 101 Freeway near downtown LA (due to flooding). Many mountain roads and surface streets are also closed and/or flooded and many accidents have been reported.

"Snow is sticking to the roadway from Frazier Mountain Park to one mile south of Gorman making travel hazardous at this time," an advisory stated. "Northbound I-5 has been closed at Vista Del Lago and southbound I-5 has been closed at the Grapevine. 405 Freeway: Major Nighttime Closures Scheduled in January for Widening

Nighttime commuters, take note. Beginning in January and lasting for two months, work in the Sepulveda Pass will affect traffic patterns, sometimes shutting down all lanes. The $1 billion collaborative Metro-Caltrans project, which broke ground in May, will add 10 miles of northbound car pool lanes between the 10 and 101 freeways--it's the last chunk of car pool-less 405 there is--and also remove and replace three bridges over the freeway, widen 13 overpasses and structures, realign 27 on- and off-ramps and bring 18 miles of retaining and sound walls. more ›

Closed since 5:30 p.m. yesterday, the 5 Freeway through the Grapevine remains closed this morning. The California Highway Patrol had hoped to open the artery that connects Southern and Central California early this morning, but dangerous conditions are apparently persisting. It may open around 10 a.m., according to an ABC7 tweet. The closure is between Grapevine and Smokey Bear roads. UPDATE: Officers will be escorting a group of 500 cars through the Grapevine around 9:30 a.m., according to Officer Heather Holglund. UPDATE 2: At 11:30 a.m., the 5 was reopened. more ›

An early morning rush-hour accident has prompted the closure of all southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway in the Santa Clarita Valley this morning. At about 5 a.m., a big rig traveling southbound jackknifed near Calgrove Boulevard, blocking lanes and impacting one of two routes out of the valley.
