Ervin Santana Tosses a No-Hitter for the Angels

Ervin Santana Tosses a No-Hitter for the Angels

With the baseball world still buzzing about the worst call ever to end a 19-inning game, Angels’ starting pitcher Ervin Santana decided to force everyone to move on. Santana pitched a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians getting the 3-1 victory, the ninth in Angels’ history. Not only was it his first no-hitter, it was also his first career victory over the Indians. more ›

Sloppy Fourth Inning Gives Dodgers the Win

Sloppy Fourth Inning Gives Dodgers the Win

Clayton Kershaw would have lost the pitching battle with Colorado Rockies’ starter Jhoulys Chacin had it not been for an adventurous fourth inning in the field for the Rockies. The two unearned runs by Chacin combined with one earned run in that inning gave the Dodgers enough offense for the 3-2 victory over the scuffling Rockies. more ›

A Breeze Turns Stormy in Dodgers 8-5 Win over Rockies

A Breeze Turns Stormy in Dodgers 8-5 Win over Rockies

Sometimes the Dodgers can kill fans with their one-run nail biters. Sometimes the Dodgers can do what they did Monday night against the Colorado Rockies. Going into the top of the ninth with the 8-1 lead, Javy Guerra wound up with his team-leading eighth save in the Dodgers’ 8-5 victory. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Predators Beat Ducks' Quack

LAst Night's Action: Predators Beat Ducks' Quack

Nashville Predators Anaheim Ducks 4-1. Back in 2003 the then-Mighty Ducks of Anaheim rode goalie Jean-Sebastian Giguere into a game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Ducks probably never wanted to be on the other end of things, but Predators’ goalie Pekka Rinne’s 27 saves helped give the team the early 1-0 series lead over the Ducks. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Overwhelm Spurs' Reserves, Bynum Injured

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Overwhelm Spurs' Reserves, Bynum Injured

LA Lakers defeat San Antonio Spurs 102-93. With the Spurs sitting their starters in favor of the Austin Toros, the Lakers had a surefire game to break their five game losing streak and puff their chests out a little as they head into the playoffs. Well it turns out Spurs’ head coach Gregg Popovich decision to sit his starters was the smart one since none of them got hurt. Meanwhile Andrew Bynum left the game in the second quarter with a hyper-extended right knee. He will get an MRI on Wednesday. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Ring Giants

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Ring Giants

LA Dodgers defeat San Francisco Giants 6-1. The Giants yet again play defense best suited for the Benny Hill Show. In the second inning after Matt Kemp walked the Giants had him picked off attempting to steal second. Shortstop Miguel Tejada dropped the ball as he applied the tag. To make matters worse James Loney hit a line drive to second baseman Freddy Sanchez who couldn’t cleanly catch it. The ball dribbles off to centerfield and Kemp scores. more ›

LAst Night's Action: To Err Is To Be an Angel

LAst Night's Action: To Err Is To Be an Angel

Cleveland Indians defeat LA Angels 3-2 (11). Ervin Santana made his Major League debut against the Indians on May 17, 2005 and gave up a cycle to the first four Indians’ hitters in the first inning giving the Indians a three runs before even recording an out. Fast forward five years later and Santana had still never recorded a win against the Indians. Doubles by Lou Marson and Shin-Soo Choo in the third inning put Santana on the losing side of the ledger, but solo homers by Hideki Matsui and Mike Napoli in the seventh inning got him out of the doghouse. The Angels couldn’t add anything else to help give Santana a career-high 17th win for the season, and with two outs in the 11th inning third baseman Alberto Callaspo couldn’t field a Shelly Duncan bouncer cleanly allowing the winning run to come home on the walk-off error. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Blinked in Limited Offense in San Francisco

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Blinked in Limited Offense in San Francisco

San Francisco Giants defeat LA Dodgers 2-1. In an almost carbon-copy game as Tuesday’s 1-0 thriller, the first team that sneezed between the Dodgers and Giants would be the loser. Well in this game Chad Billingsley (L, 11-10) had the allergies. After Travis Ishikawa hit a one-out double in the seventh inning, Billingsley made a wild pitch that sent Ishikawa to third base paving the way for Mike Fontenot’s bloop single that scored Ishikawa. Having never won a game in his career against the Dodgers before August, Matt Cain (W, 12-10) has now won two since August 1. The Giants added another run in the eighth inning that was set up by a wild pitch by Kenley Jansen that allowed Aubrey Huff to take third base and score on Pablo Sandoval’s fielder’s choice. Andre Ethier made the game a little more respectable with a solo homer with two outs in the ninth against closer Brian Wilson (S, 43). more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers, Angels Offense Continue to Mold

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers, Angels Offense Continue to Mold

San Diego Padres defeat LA Dodgers 2-1. An Aaron Cunningham sacrifice fly in the second inning and an Adrian Gonzalez RBI double in the third marred Clayton Kershaw’s (L, 11-10) outing against the Padres. Padres’ starter Mat Latos (W, 14-5), a day after being scratched from a start against the Dodgers with flu-like symptoms, mowed through the Dodger lineup striking out 10 tying a career-high. Scott Podsednik finally sparked the offense in the sixth inning with a two-out double coming home on Rafael Furcal’s single. The Dodgers had a rally going in the eighth inning thanks to a leadoff double by pinch hitter Jamey Carroll off of reliever Mike Adams, but after Adams got pinch hitter Jay Gibbons to fly out closer Heath Bell (S, 39) came in and struck out Podsednik, walked Furcal and struck out James Loney to end the threat. By the way Kershaw had his second one-two-three first inning of the season, and the Dodgers fall under .500 for the first time since April 29. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Swept Away by Mets

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Swept Away by Mets

NY Mets defeat LA Dodgers 7-3. Both Madonna in 2002 and the Dodgers in New York were Swept Away and both were epically horrific. The Dodgers brought up John Ely from Albuquerque to pitch in his first Major League game, and aside from a particularly bad second inning when he gave up four runs thanks to his questionable... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Silence Thunder

LA Lakers defeat Oklahoma City Thunder 111-87. Let them eat tacos! This was the Lakers’ team that everybody was expecting for the last two months. LAst Night's Action: Angels Continue To Roll

LAst Night's Action: Angels Continue To Roll

LA Angels defeat Cleveland Indians 5-2. Erick Aybar got the Angels going leading off the bottom of the first for the Angels with an unlikely solo homer. But the night would belong to Hideki Matsui who with a single in the fifth inning collected his 1,000th hit in the Major Leagues and his 2,390th combined with his Japanese professional hits. The Angels would put up three runs in that first inning and another two in the sixth inning to drive Indians’ starter David Huff out of the game. Meanwhile Jered Weaver continued his excellent start for the season pitching six innings allowing only one run on seven hits and a walk. more ›

Dodgers Lose A Game That Doesn’t Count

Dodgers Lose A Game That Doesn’t Count

On a chilly night in Dodgertown, the Dodgers bullpen froze to death, and the Cleveland Indians won a matchup that didn’t count. The 6 to 3 contest was the only pre-season game played at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers open the regular season on Monday in Pittsburgh. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Lose Thrice

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Lose Thrice

St. Louis Cardinals defeat LA Dodgers 10-0. Chad Billingsley started out strong for the Dodgers pitching a one-hit shutout after five innings. Then the sixth inning happened. Billingsley crumbled giving up two two-run singles and one one-run single. After the dust settled, the Cards put a six-spot on the Dodgers. After Claudio Vargas got two out in the eighth inning with a runner on third, Brent Leach came in and got no outs allowing the runner on third to score (run charged to Vargas) and giving up three more on his own. more ›

The Dodgers Are Buying, But Who Is Selling?

The Dodgers Are Buying, But Who Is Selling?

With the Friday trade deadline rapidly approaching for Major League Baseball, teams are looking at themselves in the mirror asking the perennial question: “Are we buyers or are we sellers?” With a one-game lead on the New York Yankees for the best record in baseball to coincide with their eight-game lead over the Colorado Rockies in the NL West, the Dodgers are clearly buyers. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Stumble in St. Louis

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Stumble in St. Louis

St. Louis Cardinals defeat LA Dodgers 6-1. For the second game in a row the Dodgers have gotten 10 or more hits yet lost a game. Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter was just that good. Although he gave up nine Dodgers hits he allowed only one run in seven innings pitched striking out two and walking two. Dodgers starter Randy Wolf had a decent outing going six innings giving up only two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. The Dodgers were in the game trailing 2-1 until the bottom of the seventh when James McDonald came into a game and had his first pitch taken out of the park by Mark DeRosa. Although Albert Pujols would hit a single only to get thrown out trying to advance to second by Matt Kemp, Matt Holliday would reach first thanks to a throwing error by third baseman Casey Blake. After Ryan Ludwick flew out to Kemp and Yadier Molina walked, Brent Leach came in for the Dodgers and gave up an RBI single to Rick Ankiel and Guillermo Mota gave up a 2 RBI double to Brendan Ryan. That was all she wrote. more ›

The 500th Dodger Third Baseman Since Adrian Beltre

The Dodgers just acquired Cleveland Indians' third baseman Casey Blake for minor league pitcher Jon Meloan and catcher Carlos Santana. Blake, who turns 35 next month, is hitting .289 with an OPS of .830 and OPS+ of 119 (an OPS+ of 100 being average) and will be a free agent at the end of the season. He will be dressed in tonight's game against the Washington Nationals. more ›

LAst Night's Action: More Futility a Mile High

LAst Night's Action: More Futility a Mile High

Colorado Rockies defeat LA Dodgers 5-3. Dodger's starter Hiroki Kuroda came out shaky in the first three innings but eventually pulled it together in his last three innings. Unfortunately the aftermath of the first three innings was giving up five runs to the Rockies who seemed to luxuriate in hitting the Dodgers. Apart from the eight-run first inning of the first game, the Dodgers were completely outplayed in this series. The positive note: Andruw Jones got an RBI double. The Dodgers will take a day off to think about what they have done, or more appropriately what they haven't done. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Angels Continue to Just Squeak By

LAst Night's Action: Angels Continue to Just Squeak By

LA Angels defeat Cleveland Indians 3-2. Jeff Mathis hit a solo shot in the fifth inning to put the Angels ahead, and that was all they needed. Yet again, the Angels did just enough to get the win and get Francisco Rodriguez his 41st save. Starter Jered Weaver left the game in the third inning with a tight back, and the Angel bullpen supported him by shutting down the Indians giving up only four hits. The Angels still have the best record in baseball thereby proving that pitching and defense wins games. Let's see what happens in the playoffs. more ›

LAst Night's Action: The Humidor's Broke

LAst Night's Action: The Humidor's Broke

LA Dodgers defeat Colorado Rockies 16-10. In an effort to conserve energy, the Colorado Rockies apparently decided to turn of the humidor. The Dodgers came out with a bang scoring eight runs in the first inning. They would go on to take an 11-0 lead in the third inning, but Coors Field being what it is the Rockies would make a comeback. After being shut out for the first two innings, the Rockies scored at least one run in the remaining seven innings but couldn't catch up. Rockie's shortstop Troy Tulowitzki in his first game of the disabled list went 5-5 with a sacrifice fly. The same fortune would be shared with Rockie's starter Kip Wells in his first action since the end of April. He gave up eight runs in that first frame that essentially sealed the deal for the Rockies. The Dodgers pitching fared a little better but not by much. Despite having a 12-3 lead in the fourth inning, Eric Stults was very erratic and was taken out of the game. How did now-retired Hideo Nomo ever pitch a no-no at Coors Field pre-humidor? more ›

LAst Night's Action: Angel's Granny Sparks Victory

LAst Night's Action: Angel's Granny Sparks Victory

LA Angels defeat Cleveland Indians 9-5. Mike Napoli hits his first grand slam in the second inning to get things rolling for the Angels. They didn't need to rely on a closer this time. But I'm sorta pissed at them since because of them the Dodgers game was blacked out on MLB.tv. more ›

LAst Night's Action: No Offense, No Win

LAst Night's Action: No Offense, No Win

Arizona Diamondbacks defeat LA Dodgers 10-5. The Dodgers need to rely on their pitching because they are not a great offensive club. When the pitching goes south, so goes the Dodgers. Monday night Esteban Loaiza had a bad outing. Tonight it was Chad Billingsley's turn. 2 2/3 innings, five runs and five hits just will not cut it. Oh, and odds are we won't see another hit from Andruw Jones until July. more ›

Red Sox Nation Celebrates!!

Red Sox Nation Celebrates!!

The Boston Red Sox, after coming back from a (reminiscent) 3-1 series deficit, last night beat the Cleveland Indians 11-2 to win the AL Championship Series and secure a spot in the World Series for the second time in four years. The Red Sox held a close 3-2 lead until the seventh inning, when Dustin Pedroia hit a 2-run homer to bring their lead to 5-2. Six runs in the eighth inning clinched the... more ›

The Twilight Zone

The Twilight Zone

What in the world is going on? On Tuesday night the Dodgers give up 15 runs to the Phillies, and now on Thursday night the Mets get 13. I was going to write off Tuesday’s game as a fluke. It happens, and the Dodgers just had to forget it and move on. Now I sense some bells starting to ring. Prozac gave up eight earned runs in only three innings pitched. Actually the only... more ›

There's No Such Thing as a Pitching Prospect

There's No Such Thing as a Pitching Prospect

Less than two years ago, Jackson was 19 and one of the most highly touted prospects in the game. Today he is 21, still young, but struggling mightily. On Thursday, Jackson was battered for seven runs in five innings against the Cleveland Indians. He's now given up 14 runs in 14 1/3 innings in spring training and seems destined for Las Vegas. more ›
