'Westside Rapist' Arrested, Blamed for 30 Murders

A 72-year-old man suspected of raping and killing at least 30 women was arrested last month for the killing of one woman who was part of a serial spree that lasted around 15 years. John F. Thomas was matched to an old case via DNA after police began swabbing registered sex offenders. Thomas, who went to prison in 1978 for a rape in Pasadena, had two waves of rape-killings. The first was on the Westside before he was caught. After serving time, he moved to Chino and another wave began in Claremont. Through all this, Thomas was never connected or suspected by police, despite leaving 20 survivors. After he was arrested, more DNA results came in connecting him to four other deaths. Thomas would prey on older woman living alone. He would rape and strangle them and leave a pillow or blanket over their faces.

Still suffering from the absence of Coachella? Have no fear, Kohoutek Music and Arts Festival is here! The free two-day event named after and in honor of the comet held every spring will be commencing tonight on the mounds at Pitzer College in Claremont. Friday night features headliners such as Brooklyn's own dance punk duo Matt and Kim and local indie rock outfits the Henry Clay People and Voxhaul Broadcast. Saturday, on the other hand, touts an array of hip hop heavyweights like Blu and Mr. Lif. It's just about the closest thing you can get to being in the desert listening to great music with like-minded music aficionados.

Pasadena Blog, Under the Dome, has found that there is an alternative plan/idea to expand the Gold Line out to Claremont. Instead of light rail, as we know the Gold Line today, the extension would be Metrolink. From reporter Dan Abendschein: "An alternative plan, said Snoble, would be to build the Gold Line as far as Azusa/Glendora, then build a heavy rail Metrolink line from there to Claremont to link the Gold Line to existing Metrolink lines. That would be more cost-effective, said Snoble, because light rail is more expensive to power with an electric system than a fuel-based one."

So this is how the Princeton Review gets press. University of California, Santa Barbara made the Princeton Review's top 20 schools for partying. Coming in at number 9, they also earned a position as the 4th best school for use of hard liquor. Other California schools making some kind of partying (or lack thereof) list was Claremont McKenna College for wide use of beer consumption (#13), UC-Santa Cruz in the "Reefer Madness" category (#6), Thomas Aquinas College for being "Stone Cold Sober" (#9), Thomas Aquinas College (again) and Pepperdine University undergraduates in Malibu for not using hard liquor, Pepperdine for also avoiding beer (#20) and Thomas Aquinas College for being weedless (#7)
