Video: Youngsters Take Us On A Walk Down El Segundo's Candy Cane Lane

'Tis the season for Christmas lights and merriment, and Los Angeles never hesitates to string up twinkling spectacles in celebration of the holidays. The budding hosts of BDCi News' upcoming show, "K&A Adventures with Korbin and Max" recently visited El Segundo's Candy Cane Lane to view the festive displays, meet Santa and find out if the kiddos have been naughty or nice this year. more ›

Having Trouble Finding Christmas Lights?

Having Trouble Finding Christmas Lights?

Here's a curious e-mail from a reader. "Target is out of Christmas lights. ok..not totally out... but in the last 3 days..I have gone to the Target stores in Woodland Hills, Echo Park, Glendale, West Hollywood and Pasadena..and they have less than a dozen boxes of string Christmas lights and each store..(mostly blue lights). I have asked and been told that they will not be restocking before Christmas...so that's it." We checked in with Target's website, which lets you search the availability of stock in local stores. While not completely out everywhere, our tipster is right--lots of items are marked as "Out of Stock" and "Limited Availability." more ›

Grove Uses Soap for Snow

Grove Uses Soap for Snow

So, there I was on a Thursday evening having just walked out of a movie at The Grove's Pacific Theater when the top of the buildings began throwing up a white, watery substance all over the ground, all over the shoppers, all over everywhere. more ›

Pencil This In: Thursday

Pencil This In: Thursday

Sometimes too much holiday cheer is a very, very bad thing. Especially the liquid kind. Hence, the lateness of today's column. But here's the down and dirty on what's happening around town tonight: more ›

Holiday Songs - Surfin' Santa

Holiday Songs - Surfin' Santa

Why do all these songs about frostbite conditions sound so wonderful in sun-drenched shirtless reverb? Ever try pushing a sled through sand? I don't recommend it. But I heartily recommend each of the following experiences. Don't worry, we'll get to more Beach Boys later on, today (with the exception of track four) it's all about those chiming guitars. THE VENTURES - Sleigh Ride This comes from their fantastic Christmas album, one of the greats... more ›

PJ Harvey @ The Orpheum, 10/15/07

PJ Harvey made a pitstop last night at the Orpheum, playing one of only a handful of shows to promote her haunting new album, White Chalk (review here). I knew this was going to be a special night when a scalper actually paid me face value for my extra ticket. On entering, the sparse stage seems to echo the stripped-down nature of the new record. A keyboard, a cymbal, an autoharp on a chair, two... more ›

Photo essay: Candy Cane Lane

There's nothing like an over-elaborate Christmas lawn display to get us in the spirit of the season. Unfortunately, it seems that this year there has been some neighborly discord regarding a particular display in Hancock Park. You see, a nice Jewish lady in this nice Jewish neighborhood appears to have more of a sense of humor than her neighbors and, among other things, has erected a large Santa in her yard that asks rhetorically,... more ›

Holiday Shopping in Style

Holiday Shopping in Style

Santa Monica’s posh Montana Ave is celebrating its annual light-up night tonight from 5-9 pm. Walk, shop, drink, take in the sights (both hot mommas and Christmas lights) all the way from 7th to 17th street. Sure Montana can be a little chi-chi for Laist, but there is no better time to soak up the Westside glamour than during this Holiday Celebration. more ›
