Box Office Review: Jennifer Lopez Fails!

Considering the former magnitude of her fame, it was expected that Jennifer Lopez's The Back-up Plan would at least eke out a box office victory this weekend. Nope! The little animated movie that could -- How To Train Your Dragon -- topped the charts for a second consecutive weekend ($15M | $178M), easily beating J-Lo's rancid "romantic comedy" ($12.2M). Date Night continues to chug along nicely despite not being nearly as funny as either The Office or 30 Rock ($10.6M | $63.4M). The Losers lived up to its title ($9.6M) but still managed to best the fantastic Kick-Ass ($9.5M | $34.8M). Note to parents: stop being such prudish losers (click it! click it! click it!) and bring your underage kids to see this superb and violent R-rated film! more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: A Loser Weekend

             + 1 more

I'm not particularly looking forward to seeing The A-Team -- err, I mean, The Losers this weekend, but it may be the best of a bad bunch. Oceans obviously looks amazingly cool, but I'm not completely on board with it's pro- to neutral position on sharks (aka, the serial killers of the sea). Subtitles will scare away many, but the brave will be rewarded by No One Knows About Persian Cats if they dare to see it (LAist review here). more ›

DVD Tuesday: Toupee Alert! Toupee Alert!

Nicolas Cage retains his title as the Enigma with this week's release of Knowing. I know I'm repeating myself, but has there been an actor in recent history who's made more mystifying choices? Rarely is an actor either brilliant or awful. Cage is always EXACTLY that. I first noticed Odette Yustman in a tiny cameo in Walk Hard. Yeah, she jumps off the screen like that. Too bad The Unborn is rote horror bilge. You know, the MST3K folks could probably make a very funny movie about Push. Dorky storyline? Check! Bad special effects? Check! more ›

Box Office Review: America is Into You

Box Office Review: America is Into You

An all-star cast was enough to propel newcomer He Only Wants To Sleep with You to the top of the weekend box-office. The generic romantic comedy tallied an impressive $27.4M to easily beat last week's champ Taken ($20.3/$53.3M). The superb Coraline managed to snag $16.3M worth of kiddie dollars as parents weren't scared away by the film's dark themes. After that it was the unnecessary and dreadful The Pink Panther 2 ($12M) followed by the equally boorish Paul Blart: Pathetic Fatso ($11M/$97M). more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: The Death of Steve Martin

Weekend Movie Guide: The Death of Steve Martin

Do you remember the days when you looked forward to the new Steve Martin movie? Is anyone anywhere looking forward to The Pink Panther 2? Speaking of bad movies, Push is proof that you shouldn't try to do effects-driven films on a tight budget. I'm just not that into He's Just Not That Into You. Fanboys was once a good movie before being raped by its distributor. Coraline looks amazingly good and amazingly creepy. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: Fairy tales can come true...

Weekend Movie Guide: Fairy tales can come true...

Convincing people to go to a movie theater and see a documentary is a labor of love for me. Folks always protest that they'd rather see something else--something bigger and shinier!--but if they suck it up and buy the ticket for the doc they are invariably happy that they did. This weekend, a truly great documentary unspools in Los Angeles. It's called Young @ Heart and it's about a group of elderly New Englanders who love to sing, well, Coldplay, Sonic Youth, The Ramones, etc. That's right--it's about senior citizens who live to rock. See it. more ›
