In Recession Obsession -- a weekly guide on how one can inexpensively achieve a beer gut during The Recession without beer -- we’ve obsessed over Guatemalan, and we’ve obsessed over chicken. But not yet Guatemalan chicken. (No, not GFC.)

Korean Fried Chicken results in tastebud confusion. Through delicious overload and a rarely-paralleled flavor density, KFC is a unique treat. (LAist has been a fan.) I’d say “move over Colonel, there’s a new feaux-military chicken-slinging hero in town,” but that’s just not the case. It’d be like alerting Italy to the mounting non-threat that is California Pizza Kitchen ("CPK," if you dine there on the regular.)
Apparently, the ballot initiative that passed last November to make cages more livable for farm animals, notably chickens and hens, is confusing farmers. The Assn. of California Egg Farmers says the prop guides space via a “broad principle” but not much detail more than that, says the LA Times. And now there is more legislation about eggs from Assemblyman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael). He wants eggs imported to the state to be produced under humane conditions and farmers say they won't support it until they get clear instructions on how to deal with being more humane within the state. Prop 2 will go in effect in 2015.
The Official Recession has been upon us for fourteen official months. It’s still not a reason we can’t enjoy life. This is LA -- we’ve got plenty of inexpensive options! A Recession Obsession is food (or an activity) that is fantastic whether times are good or bad -- because it's that damn good. We last loved on Baja California’s finest fried bargains: fish tacos, and today...
An e-mail to LAist and Curbed LA yesterday showed us a photo of decapitated chickens found along the Santa Monica Blvd in Silver Lake. "We dont know where they came from or how they got there, but they were in plastic bags, decomposing," the do gooder from the LA Neighborhood Cleanup Project wrote. "We are currently searching for an explanation. Any ideas? Is there an underground cock fighting arena in the neighborhood?"
In late December, Mediterranean Fresh finally opened their doors next to the famous Musso & Franks on Hollywood Blvd. Owned by the Sunset Entertainment Group--same people who operate the Pig & Whistle--this order and sit-down style restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at night, but they are hoping to keep it open until 4 a.m. once they get their liquor license. So far, we're finding the food to be quality matched by great prices.
LAist Featured Photos' oranges are not the only fruit took a tip from Jonathan Gold and headed over to KyoChon for some post-Wiltern chicken. The whole experience gets the full treatment on their What You See is What You Eat blog, but we'll serve up some tasty morsels, like those leftover pieces of chicken pictured above.
We all have our guilty pleasures when it comes to food--you know, the things we know we shouldn't eat, from the restaurants (using that term loosely in this case) we know we shouldn't frequent. For LAist Featured Photos pool contributer ~db~ it's all about the Popeye's. To confess: "I tell myself it's okay, since I refuse to eat at McDonalds or Taco Bell. I'm sure my doctor would cringe knowing how I like their mashed potatoes." Incidentally, those verboten potatoes are what lurk beneath the biscuit in their little lidded tub.
After a two-month investigation of animal abuse at a chicken farms in Central California that led to of of the biggest egg producers in the state being singled out for mistreatment, Trader Joes has discontinued carrying eggs from that vendor. "The Monrovia-based chain said it wants all its vendors to abide by industry practices for animal care," according to KNBC.
It may look like your average, everyday taco truck, but the Shabazz Good Foods truck is not slinging the usual carnitas. Every Sunday, you can find their truck parked on 43rd and Crenshaw at Leimert Plaza Park. They sell not only the infamous bean pies, but blueberry cream pies, pineapple cream pies, and a few soulful lunches.
Thankfully I had Tivo'd Sunday's Kenny vs. Spenny and Robot Chicken to watch last night because after the first 15 minutes of Saving Grace I couldn't take any more. Unfortunately I tuned back into SG in time to catch Lem giving Holly Hunter a hand job which was so not worth it. In case you missed him last week, you have a couple more chances to go to a Q&A with writer/creator David Milch at the WGA Theater tomorrow and Thursday from 2:15-4:00pm for FREE.
Philly native, Beanie Sigel hit the road for Los Angeles to promote his new album, The Solution which dropped yesterday. The Rocafella representative took a little time in between radio interviews and a late night run to Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles to chat with LAist about his latest effort, his time locked up and the current state of hip hop music. How’s the response for the album been so far? Good, you know the album...
When people think of Leimert Park, they usually focus on Leimert Plaza Park and the one block of Degnan to the north. But the neighborhood of Leimert Park encompasses the eastern side of Crenshaw Boulevard, including Crenshaw and King Blvd all the way north to Rodeo Road. M&M Soul Food sits right beneath one of the blue signs delineating the Leimert Park neighborhood. When you see a soul food restaurant on television, nine times out...
I'm a total cooking-show whore, I'll admit it right up front (although Sandra Lee's "open a can of crap and put a marshmallow on it!" school of cooking has never sat right with me). I have a long long queue of Jamie Oliver and Mario Batali cooking shows on my DVR, since they play them at odd hours, either when I'm asleep or at work. I know that Anthony Bourdain would gladly put a cigarette out on my arm for saying this, but I kinda love Jamie Oliver, with his cute little lisp and cute little motorbike and cute little wife and kid. I know his dishes aren't what you would call authentic, but I like his style and his ingredients and his cute little lisp. Did I mention that already?
A favorite of locals and a darling of restaurant reviewers, Ackee Bamboo on Degnan helps to alleviate LA's need for some good Jamaican food. Kingston-born proprietress Marlene Sinclair and her husband Delroy serve up generous portions to the hungry customers who are often making a special pilgrimage to Leimert Park just to try her jerks and curries.
As Lou Reed put it, "The first thing you learn is you always gotta wait." But when you are jonesing, you are always willing to wait. And the catfish at Cafe Soul definitely brings the jones down on me. Cafe Soul opened this past October in the location that was formerly home to the Kitchen on 43rd Place. The changeover was so fast, I'm not sure the restaurant even closed its doors. Cafe Soul...
If you're anything like us and still incorporate large quantities of instant ramen noodles into your diet (is that shameful for a food writer to admit?), this morning's news might cause more than a little worry. We woke to our local news broadcasters discussing yet another American health worry: salt. Apparently Americans consume 50% too much salt in their diet, much of it locked up in processed and canned foods, and the FDA is...
Although most of us here at LAist are gourmet vegan chefs, a few of us (hi!) get our meals via drive-thru's not just daily, but several times a day.
Three losses in a row. A close loss in Milwaukee. A thrashing at the hands of the Boston. Then losing a 14-point lead and the game to New Jersey. That’s what last week brought the Lakers, pain and misery. And now a 7-6 record after a promising start.
Now that Thanksgiving is over, many of us are feeling guilty about overeating and we're starting to sweat the next month. My philosophy is to go ahead and enjoy the food when it is a special event, like Christmas Eve. What you really have to watch are the little unhealthy habits that the season brings - mindless cookie munching in the breakroom, triple-macchiattos to keep your energy up, and fast food meals eaten on-the-run as you rush from store to store. Luckily, there are a few chains that will keep the guilt factor down while still getting you out the door quickly.
What? There are unnecessary quotation marks in the title? Better report this to the good people over at The "Blog" of "Unnecessary" Quotation Marks. I especially like the ones with people selling "chicken" "hamburgers" or "maple syrup".
Read our exclusive LAist interview with G4TV's Olivia Munn to find out how she feels about playing Gay Chicken with Kevin Pereira, living in Los Angeles, and making out with her spray-tan lady
Remember that tear-jerking story-song, Rocky? She said, "Rocky, I never cooked Thanksgiving before, don't know if I can do it... but if you'll let me lean on you, and take my hand, I might get through it..." Thanksgiving is actually much easier than a lot of dinners I've cooked. It's one of the easiest. People just become intimidated by the sheer size of everything, and the fear of being judged. Just think of it...
Recent studies from both Dutch and Norwegian researchers are confirming that consumption of omega 3 fatty acids, which are most often found in fish and nuts, may make you smarter (or at least help you utilize what you've got): People who reported eating on average at least a third of an ounce of fish per day -- 10 grams -- outscored those who skimped on fish, regardless of factors including age, education, and heart...

For 55 years there has been once place to go at 2am for good Pastrami. Johnnie's Pastrami is a Culver City landmark. Just around the corner from Titos Tacos you find this 1950's neon clad restaurant. I have lived down the street from it for five years and never seen it empty. It's the hub of the late shift workers, Cops, Teens, Sony employees, and Pastrami aficionados. You can sit inside at the counter and...
Sometimes I think the sign out front ought to read: EL INDIO: PROUDLY HELPING DRUNKS SOAK UP THE ALCOHOL FOR OVER 30 YEARS! 24-hours a day, this Northridge taco stand buzzes with a steady stream of policemen, students, and blue collar joes. But El Indio really starts hopping after the bars close down. Everyone in the valley knows this is the hotspot for post-party tacos. I secretly enjoy eavesdropping on packs of club-hopping young...
If the department stores can put their Christmas merch out already, we can sure as hell start celebrating Halloween! Friday, October 12th Rosemary's Billygoat, who always put on a special-effects extravaganza along with some serious rocking, will be playing at The Haunt at the Northridge Fashion Center. There will also be three haunted houses and a Fall Festival. Rosemary's Billygoat plays at 9pm. The CIA (California Institute of Abnormal Arts) in North Hollywood's Fright Night...
