LA Dodgers defeat St. Louis Cardinals 9-4. “Where the hell was all of the run support earlier in the season you assholes?!” If I were Dodgers’ starter Hiroki Kuroda, that’s exactly what I would say to every position player. But of course Kuroda is a much nicer person than I, so I’m sure he’s just happy to be able to exhale a bit on the mound. Well as much as one can relax in the middle of the St. Louis 97-degree-plus-humidity weather summer day without melting one’s cleats.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Sweep Birds, Angels Sweep Chi Sox
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Bash Red Birds
LA Dodgers defeat St. Louis Cardinals 13-2. The Libyans took control over Muammar Gaddafi’s compound. There was a 5.8 earthquake in Virginia that could be felt all along the East Coast as they prepare for Hurricane Irene. The Dodgers bid adieu to catcher Dioner Navarro due to “philosophical differences”. So it just followed that the Dodgers would vomit up runs like a bloated supermodel wannabe after Thanksgiving.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Blank Bucs
Hiroki Kuroda got only the two runs of support in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a Juan Uribe double play and a Jerry Sands RBI double to right field. Kuroda (W, 4-3) in turn gave the Dodgers seven innings of a three-hit shutout walking only three batters and striking out eight. Paul Maholm (L, 1-5) unfortunately couldn’t keep up with Kuroda in that sixth inning. Matt Guerrier pitched a perfect eighth while Vicente Padilla got his third save of the season. Reliever Hong-Chih Kuo was put on the 15-day disabled list with anxiety disorder. Scott Elbert will meet the team in Pittsburgh to replace Kuo.
LAst Night's Action: Chris Paul and Hornets Sting Lakers in Game 1
Normally a Laker loss in the playoffs isn’t cause for concern, but losing Game 1 to a seven-seed? Maybe a little alarming. The last time the Lakers lost Game 1 at home was on May 4, 2009 when the Houston Rockets beat the Lakers 100-92 in the Western Conference Semifinals. It was a tough series filled with a lot of Aaron Brooks and Luis Scola, but the Lakers eventually prevailed in Game 7 en route to the first of the repeat championships.
Kershaw Can't Stem the Losses as Dodgers Lose Five in a Row
Things are starting to get dark at Dodger Stadium. There is a 9.2% decrease in overall ticket sales after their seventh home game (324,989 in 2010; 294,723 in 2011.) The Dodgers have lost five of their last six games. So what better remedy for one night than a healthy dose of Clayton Kershaw who seemed ready for the challenge?
Angry Birds Attack Dodger Stadium
64 years ago Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier when he crossed the line at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, NY. Aside from every player wearing the number 42 and a nice pregame video presentation complete with Don Newcombe throwing the ceremonial first pitch, the game didn’t have a ceremonial vibe their 11-2 loss against the St. Louis Cardinals notwithstanding.
LAst Night's Action: Dodger Bullpen Blows Billingsley's Great Day
Arizona Diamondbacks defeat LA Dodgers 5-4. Chad Billingsley gave up a run while striking out 13 batters. Staked to a 4-1 lead thanks to Rod Barajas’ two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning, after Ronald Belisario got Augie Ojeda to ground out to start the bottom of the eighth, the combination of George Sherrill and Jonathan Broxton stunk up the joint.
LAst Night's Action: John Ely Struck Down in Dodgers' Loss
Arizona Diamondbacks defeat LA Dodgers 5-2. John Ely and the strike zone still aren’t seeing eye-to-eye with Ely allowing six walks to Diamondbacks’ hitters. After Stephen Drew scored on Tony Abreu’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to tie the game 1-1, Cole Gillespie gave the D-Backs the 4-1 lead with a three run homer off of Ely in the sixth inning.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers On Two Game Winning Streak
LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1. Not one person can accuse Clayton Kershaw as being the reason the Dodgers are not in the playoffs. He flirted with another complete game shutout this month, but a single by Chris Johnson and a double by Tony Abreu that scored Johnson ended that. With nothing playoff related determined by the outcome of this game, the Dodgers played a lot of young guns and Trent Oeltjen rewarded them with an RBI triple in the third inning for the game’s first score. Jay Gibbons hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning after Andre Ethier led off the inning with his first triple of the season.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Swept
Chicago White Sox defeat LA Angels 1-0. There were no delays in the White Sox four-game sweep over the Angels. Ervin Santana (8-7) pitched a spectacular game against the Sox save for the first inning where he hit lead-off hitter Juan Pierre with a pitch. After Alex Rio’s double sent Pierre to third, Paul Konerko hit a sacrifice fly...
LAst Night's Action: Angels Having a Bad Time in Chicago
Chicago White Sox defeat LA Angels 5-2. Another day, another rain delay for the Angels. After two hours, 20 minutes the first pitch was thrown for the Angels’ inevitable loss. Coming into this game White Sox starter Freddy Garcia was 14-3 against the Angels. With his six innings of one-run ball, make that 15-3 now. Angels’ starter Joe Saunders gave up all five runs on ten hits in his 5 2/3 innings of work to get tagged with the loss. Bobby Jenks got his 19th save of the season for the Sox in his perfect ninth.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Wait for Loss
Chicago White Sox defeat LA Angels 4-1. They waited for the rain to pass, but the Angels still couldn’t muster a win against the White Sox. Jered Weaver (8-4) gave up all four runs in his 6 1/3 innings of work including two homers by Alex Rios and Andruw Jones. Meanwhile White Sox starter Jake Peavy had to leave the game while pitching to Mike Napoli with two outs in the second inning. He strained his side and will likely have to go on the disabled list. Tony Peña (2-1) though took up the slack in getting the win going 4 1/3 innings of relief giving up only one run on five hits. Bobby Jenks recorded his 18th save.
LAst Night's Action: Angels, Dodgers Strike Out
Chicago White Sox defeat LA Angels 9-2. The White Sox wasted no time jumping on Angels’ starter Scott Kazmir. After Juan Pierre grounded out to lead off the first, Alexei Ramirez homered to left field for the 1-0 lead. Kazmir walked Andruw Jones to lead off the second inning. That bit Kazmir in the ass when Jones stole second base with Brent Lillibridge batting and scored on Lillibridge’s single...
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Power Past Suns
LA Lakers defeat Phoenix Suns 124-112. It got a little hairy there for a second for the Lakers as the Phoenix Suns made a push in the third quarter. But Pau Gasol and the Lakers pushed their lead and now have a 2-0 series lead in the Western Conference Finals over the Suns. For the Lakers Gasol had 29 points and nine rebounds, Kobe Bryant scored 21 and a personal playoff record 13 assists, while the “lucky” Lamar Odom scored 17 points and 11 rebounds in the Lakers’ victory.
LAst Night's Action: Pirates Outpower Dodgers
Pittsburgh Pirates (1-0) defeat LA Dodgers (0-1) 11-5. Vicente Padilla’s and George Sherrill’s bad spring extended into the first game of the regular season as the Dodgers were shelled by the Pirates in a sunny Pittsburgh. Pirate’s right fielder Garrett Jones feasted on Padilla hitting two homers in his first two at-bats: the first with Akinori Iwamura on first in the first inning that landed in the Allegheny River to tie the game at 2-2...
LAst Night's Action: Angels Get By Twins
LA Angels defeat Minnesota Twins 6-5 (10th inning). On the day the Angels unveiled the logo for next season's All Star Game being hosted at Angels Stadium, the Angels needed some extra to come from behind against the Twins. With Joan Jett in attendance, the Angels allowed Jason Kubel to ride roughshod over them. Kubel went 2-for-5 with three RBI in this game giving him 10 RBI in four games against the Angels. Jered Weaver would go seven innings plus one batter in the eighth inning giving up four runs on six hits and two walks. In the bottom of the ninth inning facing Twins closer Joe Nathan, the Angels dinked and dunked scoring twice to tie the game at five and give Nathan only his third blown save of the season. After Angels closer Brian Fuentes came in and pitched a perfect tenth, Mike Napoli hit a walkoff RBI single off of Jesse Crain in the home half of the inning.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Fall on Face
Chicago White Sox defeat LA Dodgers 10-7. Just as I write about how the Dodgers pitching has kept them on top, they decide to go into the tank. Dodger pitching gave up six homers to the White Sox: three off of starter Randy Wolf; two off of Cory Wade and one off of James McDonald. It's the most home runs given up by the Dodgers in eight years. But the Dodgers would fight back after being down 10-3 after six innings. The would score a run in the seventh and three in the eighth. Even though the seven-run deficit was too much to overcome, their fight is something that will help them out in the long run.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Beat up on Another Chicago Team
LA Dodgers defeat Chicago White Sox 5-2. This was Hiroki Kuroda at his best. Kuroda gave up a solo shot to former Dodger prospect Paul Konerko in the second inning and an RBI single to Jermaine Dye in the ninth as the only blemishes in his 8 2/3 inning performance. After Dye's single Jonathan Broxton came in and Jim Thome to strike out to end the game. Meanwhile the offense was buoyed by James Loney's two-run dinger in the second and Casey Blake's two-run single in the eighth inning. The Dodgers are now 23 games over .500 the most since the end of 2004.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Answer Back
LA Lakers defeat Denver Nuggets 103-94. Lakers players not named Kobe Bryant or Pau Gasol made an appearance in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals. Most notably Lamar Odom became the beast everyone knew he could be scoring 19 points, grabbing 14 boards and blocking four shots. To open the fourth quarter Odom was everywhere defensively and offensively helping the Lakers go on a 11-0 run to start the fourth. Meanwhile when the Lakers looked a bit lethargic in the third quarter, Shannon Brown came into the game and made an emphatic dunk over Chris "Birdman" Anderson. The game was tight throughout being tied after the first, second and third quarters. But the Lakers were active on defense in the fourth quarter and summarily was able to pull out the game. By the way, Kobe Bryant scored only 22 points.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Pound Rockies Again
LA Dodgers defeat Colorado Rockies 7-1. What better way to come out of a hitting slump than to play against the worst team in the NL West? Casey Blake came through with the bases loaded in the fifth inning hitting his second double off of Rockies starter Aaron Cook clearing the bases giving the Dodgers a 4-0 lead. Although Dodgers starter Eric Milton gave one run back in the bottom of that frame, he pitched just well enough to get his first win since August 8, 2006 when he played for the Cincinnati Reds. Juan Pierre had just another normal outing for him, a 3-for-5 day scoring twice and driving two home. Orlando Hudson went 2-for-3 extending his hitting streak to a career-high 16 games. The Dodgers will bring the brooms out and go for the sweep today.
LAst Night's Action: Action Packed
Chicago White Sox defeat LA Dodgers 2-0. Dodger's starter Clayton Kershaw couldn't get out of the fifth inning, and the Dodger's offense did nothing to help him. The Dodgers had their chances to at least make it a game, but when it counted the most the Bums went cold. Kershaw is still without a win in any professional game this year, and thanks to being in a horrible NL West the Dodgers still have a chance of winning the division.
LAst Night's Action: Complete Game for Stults
LA Dodgers defeat Chicago White Sox 5-0. Eric Stults just a couple of weeks ago was sweating it out in Vegas. Wednesday night he became the second Dodger pitcher this season to throw a complete game shutout giving up only four hits while walking only one. Stults was right on his game confusing the Sox hitters all night. Meanwhile Joe Torre decided to field a more normal looking lineup including Andre Ethier and Blake DeWitt. Ethier came through in the first inning with an RBI single and scoring a run. DeWitt hit a two-run double in the fourth inning and scoring a run on Stults' sacrifice fly.
LAst Night's Action: It's Not 1959 Anymore
Chicago White Sox defeats LA Dodgers 6-1. Thanks to being pulled over in Century City on Pico for a fix-it ticket, I missed the first hour of the game. To really pour it on, the game only lasted 2:05. It was a pitcher's duel until the eighth inning when Derek Lowe left everything up and the Sox took him to task. The Sox scored four in the inning to take a 6-1 lead. Against Mark Buehrle, the only Dodger fight was a solo homer shot by Delwyn Young in the bottom of the fifth. Even my cat has more fight in him.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Demolish Spurs
LA Lakers defeat San Antonio Spurs 101-71. I was wrong. I really thought the Spurs would be well rested and completely shut down the Lakers. In fact the opposite happened. After feeling each other during most the first half, the Lakers went on a 9-0 run to take a nine point lead in the half. In the second half, the Lakers ran circles around the Spurs swarming like locusts around Tony Parker and Tim Duncan effectively shutting them down. And Manu Ginobli was forced to go to his right all night long. It was a very convincing win for the Lakers, but they have to remember the Spurs are a completely different team at home. Game three will be in San Antonio Sunday night.
LAst Night's Action: Thriller at Staples
LA Lakers defeat Utah Jazz 111-104. Kobe Bryant, sore back and all, and the Lakers held off the Jazz to win game five of the series. The fourth quarter started with an 81-81 tie and something happened that didn't happen in overtime in game four: Kobe Bryant attempted no shots. Instead he relied on his other four teammates to make the open shots. The best one came 21 seconds left in the game with the Lakers leading 105-102. Sasha Vujacic missed a three pointer and Pau Gasol came up with the offensive rebound and smashes it into the bucket. The Lakers lead the series 3-2 and will play Friday night at Utah.
LAst Night's Action: Gagne Saves
Milwaukee Brewers defeat LA Dodgers 5-3. The Dodgers have worse skid marks than one of my exes. With a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning, Dodger's starter Brad Penny gave up a two-run double to last season's NL Rookie of the Year and local boy Ryan Braun. Closer Eric Gagne came in the ninth inning for the save and gave up a single and a walk. Juan Pierre, representing the tying run, pops out to end the game. The Dodgers have now lost five games and just don't look the same with Rafael Furcal on the DL.
LAst Night's Action: A Win for LA!!!
LA Angels defeat Chicago White Sox 10-7. This was not a pretty game by any stretch of the imagination, but it looks like Vladamir Guerrero's bat has come back to life after being dormant for so long. Guerrero hit an Earl Weaver in the fifth inning to give the Angels a 6-4 lead. Being up 10-4 in the eighth inning didn't make things easier for the Angels with the White Sox attempting to make a valiant come back. After scoring two in the eighth and one in the ninth, that was all they could muster. Nick Adenhart gets his first big-league victory for the Angels.
