LA Lakers defeat Denver Nuggets 92-88. The game was tied at 86-86 with a minute left. Three pointers by Ramon Sessions and Steve Blake sank the Nuggets in their hopes of tying the series. Not even a Danilo Gallinari flop could slow the Lakers down. Kobe Bryant had 22 points, Andrew Bynum had 19 points while Blake had 10 and Jordan Hill had 12 off the bench. Lakers lead the series 3-1.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Pull Out a Win in Denver
It Wasn't A Good Day
Today wasn’t a good day for the Dodgers. First came news that closer Jonathan Broxton needed an MRI on his right elbow. Then came the late scratch of right fielder Andre Ethier due to a sore left elbow. During the sixth inning Juan Uribe was pulled from the game after getting hit by a pitch on the left hand from Cubs’ starter Carlos Zambrano in the fourth inning. So the Dodgers’ 5-1 loss to the Cubs just seemed like piling on by that point.
Concern Mounts with Jonathan Broxton
The Dodgers’ 4-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs came down to this: Jonathan Broxton made a mess and Blake Hawksworth couldn’t clean it up.
With the game tied 1-1, Manager Don Mattingly brought in Broxton (L, 1-2) for the top of the ninth inning in a non-save situation. Despite the smattering of boos amongst whatever remained of the crowd of 38,017, things seemed all right after Broxton got Aramis Ramirez to pop out to first base in foul territory.
Strange Winds Blow Through Dodger Stadium
While the winds weren’t blowing that hard, the Dodgers’ 5-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs certainly did embody the weirdness that Chandler wrote.
The first hint of this came in the bottom of the second inning with two outs, a run in, Juan Uribe on second base and Ivan De Jesus, Jr. at the plate. De Jesus scorched a grounder fair down the first baseline that headed towards the wall of the baseline box club seats. As Uribe stormed home, a fan reached down and picked up the ball in play.
Dodgers Got Busy Quick
The Dodgers and general manager Ned Colletti were busy today acquiring pieces in hopes of making a third consecutive postseason run.
Dodgers Power Past Cubs
Behind starter Vicente Padilla’s sterling eight innings of work and the offense jumping on Chicago Cubs’ starter Carlos Silva, the Dodgers finished out the last game before the All Star Break with an exclamation point shutting out the Cubs 7-0.
Cubs Bite Ely, Dodgers 7-3
In his second consecutive short outing, Los Angeles Dodger rookie pitcher John Ely (4-7) let Chicago Cubs hitters get the best of him, lasting only two and one-thirds innings while giving up six runs against his home state rival before a national Fox television audience and an announced crowd of 49,016 that included plenty of local Cubbie fans and actor David Duchovny, who threw out the game’s first pitch.
Dodgers Cling to Victory over Cubs
After being shut out by Cubs’ starter Ted Lilly for seven innings on May 27 at Wrigley Field in their 1-0 loss, the Dodgers went to town against him in their 9-7 win over the Cubs.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Swept
Chicago White Sox defeat LA Angels 1-0. There were no delays in the White Sox four-game sweep over the Angels. Ervin Santana (8-7) pitched a spectacular game against the Sox save for the first inning where he hit lead-off hitter Juan Pierre with a pitch. After Alex Rio’s double sent Pierre to third, Paul Konerko hit a sacrifice fly...
Furcal Powers Dodgers Past Cubs
Although it was Andre Ethier action figure night, it was Rafael Furcal and his game winning two-run homer in the seventh inning who was the hero for the Dodgers in their 3-2 win over the Chicago Cubs.
Furcal went 3-for-3 and was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning and came up a triple short of the cycle and is batting .500 with 17 runs, four homers and 15 RBI since June 26.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Power Up Wrigley
LA Dodgers defeat Chicago Cubs 8-5. An 18 minute power outage couldn't silence the Dodger bats. The Dodgers took advantage of three Cubs errors, although the Dodgers didn't play cleanly either with two errors of their own. Casey Blake hit a solo homer in the ninth inning while James Loney went 3-for-5, a homer short of the cycle.
Dodgers Offense MIA against Dempster, Cubs
The Dodgers couldn’t counter Cubs starter Ryan Dempster and his quirky delivery losing 3-1.
“He kept us off balance,” center fielder Matt Kemp said of Dempster’s performance.
“Dempster was good all game,” manager Joe Torre said. “He’s been good against us. He knows how to pitch. His pitch count was good in the late innings.”
It's a Strange Place
It’s amazing what a home stand with the Cubs can do for a team’s psyche. While the Dodgers clubhouse had been loose during this week, when I came to the stadium it was borderline jubilant on a Sunday morning.
Dodgers Make It Three Wins In A Row Against The Cubs
For the second straight game, the Los Angeles Dodgers (74-50) need but only two runs to defeat the Chicago Cubs (61-60) -- the league rival they made quick work of in last season’s Division Series.
Dodgers Look To Get Their Groove Back
The Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs lather up the sunscreen for a not-too-common Saturday-day game, in their third contest in a series of four. A win would give the Dodgers their third in a row, and perhaps the momentum which Dodgers manager Joe Torre seeks.
Wolf Chews Through Cubs, Dodgers Win Second Straight
For the second time this week, Randy Wolf’s (8-6) hot bat and even hotter arm, propelled the Los Angeles Dodgers (73-50) to a victory over a league rival.
Dodgers Battle Cancer All Weekend, Cubs Tonight
Today and tomorrow, ThinkCure!, the Dodgers’ official charity hosts its second annual Radiotelewebethon. ThinkCure! aims to bring Southern Californians together to work towards curing cancer. Their efforts are in conjunction with City of Hope and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
Martin Powers Dodgers to Slam Past Cubs
The offensive slump the Dodgers found themselves in seemed to be alleviated with one crack of the bat in their 7-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs.
With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning and the bases loaded with one out, catcher Russell Martin took the first pitch he saw from Cubs reliever Angel Guzman and drove it over the left centerfield wall for his second career grand slam.
“It felt good,” Martin said after the game. “Not many words needed this day. It felt good sitting on the ball, and really just trying to get at least one run in. I got four in, so it feels good.”
Where Did the Dodgers Hide the Offense?
At the beginning of the season I made the proclamation that the Dodger offense would be a juggernaut this season. Of all the concerns with the team it would be the pitching. While the pitching has been a concern, this stretch of games over the last month has seen the offense go stale.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers in Another Nail Biter
LA Dodgers defeat Chicago Cubs 2-1. Who knew Randy Wolf would give the Dodgers such great performances? Wolf took to the Friendly Confines going seven-plus innings giving up one run on six hits and a walk with seven strike outs. The only run he gave up was the first batter of the eighth inning Bobby Scales hitting a pinch hit homer to stir the Wrigley crowd. Ramon Troncoso didn't make things easy practically refusing to throw a strike. In both the eighth and ninth innings the tying runs were in scoring position, but Troncoso managed to get out of the jam both times. Juan Pierre went 2-for-4 with a stolen base which is good for me since I signed him as a free agent on my fantasy team.
LAst Night's Action: OMFG!
LA Clippers defeat Boston Celtics 93-91. OM-fucking-G indeed. Eric Gordon left the game with a shoulder injury and Baron Davis fouled out for the Clips, but they managed to stun the basketball world and defeat the reigning champs. The Clippers turned the ball over eight less time than the Celtics and they outscored the Celtics by a huge margin in the paint. Zach Randolph led all scorers with 30 points with four other Clips scoring in double figures.
Funda-MENTAL Differences
There was lots of speculation that the Dodgers would be merely a bump in the road for the Chicago Cubs, owners of the best record in the National League. A lot of people wrote off the Dodgers because of the weak NL West. So to some people the fact that the Dodgers are leading the NLDS two games to none might be a surprise. More of a surprise is just how different the mindset between the two teams are. Last night's 10-3 smacking, which wasn't even that close, just illustrates where the two teams are mentally.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Chew on Wrigley
LA Dodgers defeat Chicago Cubs 10-3. Everyone say this with me: The Dodgers have a chance to go to the NLCS Saturday. The Cubs infield handed the game to the Dodgers with errors committed by each player on the horn which lead to five Dodger runs. Meanwhile Manny Ramirez struck for yet another postseason homerun and Chad Billingsley proved he could pitch under the glare of the spotlight going 6 2/3 innings giving up only one run on five hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. As for the Cubs their bats continued to be chilled apart from Derrek Lee and Mark DeRosa. Alfonso Soriano, Geovany Soto, Aramis Ramirez and Kosuke Fukudome were as quiet as the Chicago faithful at Wrigley. The potential clenching game will be at Dodger Stadium on Saturday.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Blast Cubbies
LA Dodgers defeat Chicago Cubs 7-2. Derek Lowe made only one mistake to Mark DeRosa in the second inning in his six innings of work, and the Dodgers used the long ball to give the them their second postseason victory since 1988. Things didn't look good for the Dodgers in the third inning when Andre Ethier struck out to end the inning with the bases loaded. But with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, James Loney recovered from swinging at two awful pitches and hit a belt-high change up out to the bleachers. This was the third grand slam in Dodgers history, the last two coming on consecutive days by Ron Cey and Dusty Baker in 1977. In the seventh inning Manny Ramirez dug a homer out of a ball that was no higher than a tee shot and blasted it deep in the bleachers while stumbling out of his shoes. Ramirez leads all hitters in baseball history with his 25th home run in the postseason. The Dodgers lead the best-of-five series 1-0.
Four and Twenty Blackbirds Baked in a Pie
The Los Angeles Dodgers are the 2008 National League West Division Champions.
Dodgers Face the Cubs in NLDS
With the Milwaukee Brewers winning the NL Wild Card today, the Dodgers will face the Chicago Cubs in the NL Divisional Series. Although the Dodgers are 2-5 against the Cubs this season, all of their contests were before the trading deadline. So the Cubs will be facing a completely different monster. First game in the series is on Wednesday, and the first game the Dodgers will be hosting is on Saturday. LET'S GO DODGERS!!!
LAst Night's Action: Pitiful Sunday
Boston Celtics defeat LA Lakers 108-102. The Lakers just stunk. They trailed by as much as 24 points in the fourth quarter but managed to get within four points in the final seconds of the game. But in the end they could not overcome their horrendous play. Although things looked good for the Lakers in the first quarter, Boston just came right back and were the aggressors. Yet again Boston kept Kobe out of the paint and their offense took the Lakers to the schoolyard in the paint.
LAst Night's Action: What Can Be Said?
Boston Celtics defeat LA Lakers 98-88. Well I called it didn't I? Two things hampered the Lakers: bad rebounding, and missing seven consecutive field goal attempts down the stretch in the fourth quarter. The Lakers were outrebounded 46-33 by the Celtics including giving up 10 offensive rebounds. The Lakers shot 41.6% while the Celtics shot 42.1%. So the Lakers know what lies ahead. And today should be a great day hearing what Vic the Brick Jacobs has to say after predicting a Laker's sweep.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Offense Smells Like New Jersey
Chicago Cubs defeats LA Dodgers 2-1 (10 innings). I don't want to hear excuses about players being injured. Aside from Rafael Furcal, the only major injuries to the lineup has been to two unproductive players: Andruw Jones and Jeff Kent. And what more does Derek Lowe have to do to get a win? He only went seven innings pitching a four-hit shutout only to have Takashi Saito blow the save in the ninth inning. In the sweep by the Cubs the Dodgers scored exactly one run in each game. Even the Giants and Padres are more productive than this.
