The Clean Plates guide to Los Angeles was released last week, and the timing is probably no coincidence; though they missed the "stocking stuffer" season, the book is poised to be prime fodder for any Angeleno embarking on a "new year, new you" kind of mission.

Dear Chefs: Supplier Tells Restaurants Why They Should Serve Only 'Clean' Meat
When you order a steak at a restaurant, do you know where the beef came from, what it was fed, and under what conditions it was slaughtered? Should that even matter? If you are among those who are lured into Sizzler because they advertise a $9.99 steak dinner deal, have you ever thought: Isn't that too cheap for good meat? (It is, by the way.)

Following last weekend's Los Angeles Food & Wine Festival and September's The Taste, it's understandable if food lovers in our fair city are experiencing "event" fatigue. It would be a shame if you let that deter you from attending Los Angeles magazine’s The Food Event 2011 this Sunday.

State to Enforce Foie Gras Ban Next Year, Some Chefs Say They'll Break the Law
California became the first state to ban foie gras back in 2004, but the law will not be enforced until next year. In July 2012, "duck liver cannot be served throughout the state if the duck was force fed, which is the method used by duck raisers for the liver to become fatty," explains AHN.
Not all chefs are on board with the ban, though.
2 Days Left to Get Your Fill of the Food & Drink Events of The Taste
If you're in town this weekend and hungry for some fun, there are two days left in the four-day bonanza food and drink event called The Taste. Celebrating Roots of Change: The 'Good Food For All' Event
Where does "good food" come from in Los Angeles? Who has access to it? Who doesn't...and why don't they? These are questions tackled by a task force assembled in September 2009 by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to address concerns about food sources, availability, sustainability, and much more. The task force worked for months, and recently issued their report, signaling a need for Good Food for All in Los Angeles.
Celebration of Food and Whine: LA Times' Event Leaves Some Hungry
If I could go back in time and make a checklist for myself for what to bring to the Los Angeles Times Celebration of Food and Wine event held Sunday, I would have included: Sunscreen, giant hat, wallet full of cash, water bottle, and infinite patience. Why? Because for many of those who paid $55 in advance, or $65 at the door for general admission, the event was anything from a slight hassle to a total disaster. Those who forked over the $125 for VIP seemed to fare better. So what happened?

Hosted by comedian and TV star George Lopez, the event drew some celebs (so we hear!) from entertainment and lots of food talent (so we ate!).
Blown Away By Los Angeles Magazine's Annual Food Event
This past Sunday, Los Angeles Magazine hosted their 3rd Annual Food Event, held on a hot and blustery afternoon at Saddlerock Ranch, a winery tucked into the hills of Mulholland Hwy in Malibu. The rustic landscape was criss-crossed by narrow, bumpy roads that heightened the excitement as we drove onto the property, with slivers of dappled hillsides, vineyards, and pens holding exotic--and less exotic--animals came into view on the way to the clearing where the tents and tables were set up.
Foodies, Rejoice! Keller Coming to LA
So it finally looks like the rumors were true: famed chef Thomas Keller will indeed be opening a branch of his restaurant Bouchon in Beverly Hills. We mentioned this earlier in the week, but the arrival of the true American top chef in the City of Angels warrants a closer look. The Los Angeles Times and EaterLA have both confirmed that this third incarnation of Bouchon (there is already one in Vegas and one in the Bay area) will be moving in to the Gardens building on Canon Drive. No, Keller himself will probably not be in the kitchen, but he has chosen Rory Herrmann of New York's Per Se (another Keller restaurant) as head chef. Expect the location to be ready for opening by fall 2009 -- although given Keller's reputation, you should probably start planning your reservations now. It's not a stretch to say that this may be the biggest and most scrutinized restaurant opening in L.A.'s history.
Weekend Festivals, Fairs, & Fun
Say Aloha to the the 50th state with a taste of the food and fun of Hawaii. Lots of Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts, vendors with all sorts of goods, fresh floral leis, loads of food (shaved ice!!!!), and beer. Luckily it won't be a grillion degrees out in Northridge, but put on your Hawaiian Tropic just in case--that California sun still burns through the fog.
Is Thai Vegan the New Sushi?
While ordering tacos this past weekend, Pat at Eating L.A. noticed that Cardone's Deli on Sunset had been replaced by a new place called The Vegan Spot. "There are seriously a lot of vegan places in Silver Lake and Echo Park already. (Cru, Flore Cafe, Elf, at least four Thai places, etc.) So we're just wondering, are there really that many vegans on the near-Eastside?"
