Tonight: DUI Checkpoints in Marina Del Rey Area and Pasadena

From 8 p.m. to 3 a.m., the LAPD will hold a Sobriety & Drivers License Checkpoint at Lincoln Blvd and Maxella Ave at the border of the L.A. city neighborhood Del Rey and unincorporated Marina Del Rey. The LAPD's Pacific Area has experienced 108 DUI-related crashes and 963 hit and runs so far this year.

The first is tonight 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. at West Florence Avenue and South Main Street in South L.A. Then tomorrow from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m., a checkpoint will be set up on Figueroa between 7th and 8th in downtown. Stay safe out there!

Between 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. tonight, police will set a checkpoint up on Figueroa Street between 8th and 9th streets. Tomorrow in Cahuenga Pass between Hollywood and the Universal City area, a checkpoint will be set up...

LAPD Sobriety Checkpoint in Echo Park Tonight

They better clear some jail cells for a bunch of drunk hipsters tonight. On the heels of 80 DUI incidents and 792 hit and runs in LAPD's Northeast Division this year, officers will hold a sobriety checkpoint at Sunset Boulevard and Echo Park Avenue tonight from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. Expect some traffic in the area, especially in light of Thom Yorke's show around the corner at the Echoplex.

DUI Checkpoint Tonight in Hollywood on Highland

As mentioned last week, the LAPD tonight will hold a DUI Checkpoint in Hollywood at on Highland Avenue at Willoughby from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. After 66 driving under influence-related and 662 hit and run traffic collisions in the area just in 2009, police say they are using this checkpoint to "educate the community to use designated drivers and not drink and drive." Also, there will be a saturation patrol in the Newton Division, which covers the southern parts of downtown (Fashion District, Pueblo Del Rio, South Park-Entertainment). "These DUI saturation patrols are being deployed in response to an increase in DUI-related traffic collisions in the Newton geographic area of the Los Angeles Police Department," a police statement read.

DUI Checkpoints in NoHo, Venice & Pasadena This Weekend

Tonight and tomorrow night, the LAPD will be conducting a couple DUI checkpoints around the city. "Our Message is simple: If we catch you drunk, you will be arrested," they say.

Checkpoint Scheduled in Pasadena for Fireworks, Not Drunks

How's this for punishment? Police checkpoints will be set up on Saturday around hillside areas not to make sure you're driving sober, but to see if you have fireworks. If you get busted, they could confiscate your car, throw you in jail or fine you $50,000, according to the Pasadena Star News. Remember, for the most part, fireworks are illegal and only some cities allow "safe and sane" ones. And of course, they'll be on the hunt for illegally parked cars.

LAPD to Hold a Number of Drunk Driving Stings this Weekend

If you can't seem to understand that you shouldn't drink and drive, this weekend you might learn your lesson. In fact the LAPD is conducting a DUI checkpoint in such a high traffic and popular spot tomorrow evening, we're sure it's going to end with a lot of people in jail for the evening (hint: take the Red Line). And tonight in two South LA and in the Harbor area, the LAPD will be conducting sobriety saturation patrols. Point being, stop the tomfoolery, the LAPD is on the look out, even in areas not mentioned here.

Why the LAPD Announces DUI Checkpoints to the Public

On Friday night from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., the LAPD is holding a sobriety checkpoint in Canoga Park at Reseda Boulevard & Sherman Way. Over the past year, the area has experienced over 50 crashes involving drunk drivers along with 346 hit and runs. That's why they are doing this, but, as many LAist readers have asked in the past, why do they announce it to the public? One reason is they have to by law, but according to Lt. John Romero, "a certain amount of prevention occurs just by a warning the public." What do you think? Should DUI checkpoints still be announced?

DUI Checkpoint near LA Live & Staples Center Tonight

It's been a tough few weeks in Los Angeles. There's been too many incidents, alcohol related or not, involving cars and pedestrians. And it just so happens that the LAPD will be setting up a sobriety checkpoint tonight just West of the Staples Center and LA Live on Olympic Blvd. at Blaine Street from 7:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. In the last three months, a higher than normal amount of traffic collisions have occurred near that intersection, according to the LAPD. Have a good time tonight, just stay safe, everyone!

3rd Time's a Charm: Another Man Brings a Gun to LAX

For the third time in four days, LA Airport Police have arrested a man for bringing a gun to LAX. "Markus Dane Sargent, 27, was taken into custody about 7 a.m. on World Way West, which is used by employees getting into the airport, Airport Police Sgt. Jim Holcomb said," via wire reports. "An antique .22-caliber long rifle made by the Marlin Firearms Co. loaded with 12 rounds was found in the trunk of his car at a perimeter checkpoint, Holcomb said." Like Saturday's incident, Sargent, who worked for an airport vendor, forgot that he had the gun in his car. And to boot, he was busted for possession of a small amount of marijuana--double tsk. On both Friday and Saturday in unrelated cases, men were arrested for bringing guns onto airport grounds.

Or, if there are, they opted not to drive where the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff's deputies had set up a DUI checkpoint on Friday night. The checkpoint, which was "set up at the westbound side of Lyons Avenue just west of Avenida Dorena from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m." had 704 cars pass through, but only three drivers were taken off the line for additional sobriety tests. At the end of the night, though, there had been no arrests made. But while there might not be any drunks driving around Newhall, there were four people among the 704 who were driving sans valid licenses. Lest the whole set-up be a wash, the deputies got to impound all four of the drivers' vehicles and issue citations.

A worker entering the media and other-attendee entrance at the Emmy Awards was stopped and briefly detained at a police checkpoint when an officer noticed a rifle in the trunk. The episode prompted traffic to be stopped at various checkpoints around the Nokia Theatre in downtown.

The three major law enforcement agencies that operate within LA County (LAPD, CHP, and the LA Co. Sheriff's Department) are working together this Labor Day weekend as a team on the "Avoid DUI Task Force." As part of the program they will operate 18 DUI checkpoints as well as "42 patrols throughout the county in search of drunk drivers," according to abc7.com. Luckily, California leads the list of states that have seen a decline in drinking-related auto deaths last year (117 fewer than the year before).

The LAPD has announced a checkpoint in an effort to get more drunk drivers off the road. Tonight from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., the intersection of Sepulveda Blvd at Nordoff in Panorama City will be host to that checkpoint. Why this location? The LAPD says that "during the past year, Panorama City has experienced over 82 collisions involving an intoxicated driver. In addition, as of July 19, 2008, there have been over 485 'Hit and Run' traffic collisions in the Mission Area."

There's a sobriety checkpoint in Hollywood at Gower Street and Hollywood Boulevard from 7:30 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. tonight. Traffic can slow down considerably at these, so if you're in the area, you should avoid it because you are a good citizen that reads LAist and doesn't drink and drive, right? And if you're drunk, taxis can now legally pull over to pick you up in some parts of Hollywood, so take advantage and make sure they don't cost you an arm and a leg by getting into the sobriety checkpoint traffic.

Here's a statistic that is saddening. There have been over 130 collisions involving an intoxicated driver this year. And that's only for the West Valley Division that covers neighborhoods like Canoga Park and West Hills. That's only one police division out of six in the San Fernando Valley. Throughout the Valley, there have been over 550 DUI related crashes.

If your Saturday evening plans have you a) drinking and b) traveling in or through Van Nuys, a word to the wise via the Daily News: "Cops will be out in force tomorrow night in Van Nuys doing a sobriety checkpoint from 6 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday to cut the number of DUI-related traffic collisions." The location of the checkpoint has not been revealed, but the reasoning is as clear as a shot glass brimming with Ketel One--there have been more than 700 hit and run incidents in the area so far this year, and approximately 100 car crashes that have been alcohol related. Sure, it's not as glamorous as boozing and cruising Sherman Way, but may we suggest the Orange Line? Or at least a designated driver!
