For the first time ever, one of NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup races will be hosted at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana this weekend with the Sprint Cup Pepsi 500 on Sunday.
A police pursuit that began in Westchester has ended in a standoff between the suspect and police outside the federal building in Westwood. Officers from Pacific Division attempted to detain the suspect on a warrant when he fled in a Volkswagen, prompting the pursuit around 10 a.m. The suspect reportedly has made threats against the White House and the Secret Service is apparently involved, according to the LA Times. Veteran Avenue has been shut down near Wilshire and a nearby apartment building has been evacuated. UPDATE, 2:15 p.m.: The SWAT team has been deployed. UPDATE, 5 p.m.: Standoff still ongoing, suspect possibly identified. UPDATE, 7:45 p.m.: The suspect has been arrested.
Not a good day for use of force reports in Long Beach. In two separate incidents, Long Beach police used their guns injuring four suspects with one officer also being shot. In the first incident, Long Beach undercover detectives witnessed a drive by shooting in Compton and pursued the vehicle onto the 710 freeway. It ended in a shootout: three suspects hit and one officer. Later, an officer responding to a vandalism call led to the suspect being shot when he tried to grab the officer's baton.
The 25-year-old woman who was behind the wheel of a U-Haul truck during a televised 90-mile police chase on January 28th has been sentenced to six months in jail, abc7.com is reporting. Further, "Alisha Nichole Mankin's driver's license was suspended for one year, and she was placed on probation for 36 months."

A U-Haul stolen from Palmdale is currently involved in a chase with California Highway Patrol officers. It made its way through Santa Clarita and headed south to Downtown streets and then westbound on the 10 Freeway to Santa Monica. As of 4:!7 p.m., the chase moved onto the Pacific Coast Highway and into Malibu, as seen live on KCAL9-TV.
The driver of a Smart Car pulled over by a California Highway Patrol officer last night in North Hollywood fled after giving the officer his license and registration. The one and a half hour chase whipped through the Valley and eventually up to eastbound 210 Freeway in Sylmar when police pulled back and ultimately abandoned ship when they confirmed the driver's home address. No word if he went straight home to get arrested or not.
Around 2:15 p.m., an LAPD police pursuit ended after a fleeing suspect vehicle struck a pedestrian and another vehicle. The suspect who was being pursued either for a stolen vehicle or DUI was arrested along with a passenger that was earlier let out during the chase. A man in his forties was in a crosswalk on the 2300 block of Griffin Ave near Broadway in the Lincoln Heights area when he was hit. He was last listed in critical condition according to Fire Department officials (Update 4:30 p.m.: KCAL9 News reported that he later died). A woman in her 30s who was driving a vehicle that got hit by the suspect car was also transported to the hospital in minor condition. In July, two pedestrians died when a suspect vehicle hit them during a police chase in Hollywood.
In Sunday's wee hours, an unusual car chase took place on our local freeways, between the LA County Sheriff and a Vons big rig. According to the San Jose Mercury News:
