'Suspicious Package' Shuts Down Portion of Century City

At about 12:30 p.m., a suspicious package prompted police to shut down the area round Santa Monica Blve and Avenue of the Stars in Century City. The bomb squad responded, but as of 2:45 p.m., there was no word on the status of the incident, according to LAPD Media Relations. This unfortunately is a regular occurrence. The area around the Federal Building has been shut down a handful of times in the past and City Hall on Monday afternoon after suspicious packages were noticed. It should be emphasized that suspicious packages are not bomb threats as rumored on Twitter. A bomb threat is basically when someone calls in the threat, according to the LAPD. A suspicious package is something noticed by a citizen or authority and makes the police aware of its location. UPDATE: As of 3:21 p.m., LAPD Media Relations was notified that the incident was cleared.

Office art is often bland, mass produced and uninspired, but that's not the case at the offices of the Creative Artists Agency in Century City. With over 400 works, their collection, which is focused on art by locals who live and create in Los Angeles, is worthy of being a contemporary museum on its own. From established artists to the young and upcoming, the CAA has been collecting these works to support arts education. "LA is great in a sense that we've got all these great art schools concentrated here," explained Thao Nguyen, who oversees the collection. "We want to support LA artists in terms of being educated here and producing art here."

Century Plaza Developers Fight Back

Developer New Century is not thrilled about today's announcement about their property being placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's annual America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places list. In fact, they've already sent two press releases, picked up by Curbed LA. The first one partially here: "We are disappointed to see the Century Plaza Hotel politicized in this way, particularly at a time when the City of Los Angeles is suffering from extreme economic hardship and is in dire need of new jobs. The naming of the hotel as an historic place is not supported by the facts. The building is less than 50 years old and does not qualify for consideration under stringent criteria for historic designation of a building of this recent age. [This fact is addressed in that LA Times story]."

Proposed for Demolition, Century Plaza Hotel Gains Historical Significance

If the new owners of the Century Plaza Hotel, currently operating as a Hyatt Regency, get their way, it will soon be razed for two 600-foot towers for commercial, hotel and residential occupation. But those dreams may have just been slashed. Today, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Los Angeles Conservancy will name the landmark on their annual America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places list, which highlights important examples of the nation's architectural, cultural and natural heritage that are at risk of destruction or irreparable damage.

What better way for a Los Angeles bar to celebrate our city than with astrology cocktails? Yup, X Bar in Century City, has perhaps the funnest theme cocktail menu idea we've seen in a long time. They have created 12 cocktails ($12 each) to represent the zodiac signs and will only serve each sign's cocktail during the dates of that particular sign. Not clear? Well, right now since we're in Pisces, so you can try the Pisces cocktail through March 21, followed up by the Aries cocktail.

As his running mate Sarah Palin prepares for her Thursday debate (notice how FOX News is already giving her an out?) with Obama VP select Joe Biden, Republican nominee John McCain will be trying to raise a quarter million dollars at a fundraiser tonight. It's at the Century Plaza Hyatt Regency in Century City, so plan ahead for some extra special traffic tonight if you're in the area. Or maybe you're going to the fundraiser 'cause hey, you get a nifty little McCain-Palin lapel pin for the $1000 to $2500 entry fee. Wow. Life would be just so complete then.

We're guessing that when the South Beach Diet and other such carb-scoffing trends warped our eating habits, that one Dr. Steven Laurence Kaplan shook his erudite head and knew he could not align himself with such tomfoolery. Why? Because Dr. Kaplan is a Bread Historian, and later this month you can meet him and chew the fat grain with him at Century City's Breadbar. Here's how it all slices:

On Saturday, September 20, BREADBAR Century City welcomes Dr. Steven Laurence Kaplan, widely recognized as the world’s leading expert on French bread, for an exclusive bread tasting and discussion at the artisanal bakery-bistro. Dr. Kaplan will lead the intimate bread tasting and explore BREADBAR’s signature offerings including the Baguette, Rustic Millstone, Buckwheat, and Redwood Rye, among others. Guests will learn about the process of tasting, the criteria involved and the methods and techniques involved in creating exceptional breads. He will also speak about his book, “Good Bread is Back,” and share his extensive taste-testing expertise gained while exploring the bakeries in Paris.
You will chew with confidence, knowing that Dr. Kaplan is both Yale and Princeton educated, and that "His primary fields of expertise are the history of bread and French history." Perhaps you can discuss whether Marie Antoinette actually said "Let them eat cake!" (Or did she say "Let them eat bread!" instead? Hmmm...)

Yesterday, Westfield Century City announced the launch of a state-of-the-art, electronic parking management system called Park Assist®, something they say is a first for North America.

No suspects have been arrested in the Monday night slaying of Pamela Fayed in a Century City parking garage. Police only say they have "several leads" for a suspect only described as a "slender man in his 20s wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans, fled in a red sport utility vehicle," according to the Daily News. Fayed, along with her estranged husband ran an internet gold trading website from Ventura County.

Yesterday evening, a woman was found with stab wounds to her neck at 1875 Century Park East in the parking garage, according to CBS2 per the LAPD. She later died at 7:45 in an area hospital.

It is striking, stacked, summery, and, dare we say sashimi-y? LAist Featured Photos contributor hinducow found this Tuna Sashimi Avocado Stack at the X-Bar in Century City. It's located at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, and focuses on small plates and desserts. Over on Yelp the folks seem to really like the nighttime only spot's outdoor fire pits and the tasty cocktails made with real fruit juice, although some prefer when the tab is covered at an event because it is a bit pricey.

It stands to reason that sometimes a good Happy Hour is hard to find in this town. But give us one that combines drink bargains with sushi and you've got our attention. If you're either coming or going on (Big) Santa Monica between the beach and WeHo or those general environs after a hard day's work, Century City's KULA Sushi Bistro's Happy Hour would make a worthy stopping point. Between 5-7 Monday-Friday evenings, the restaurant has discounted drink specials and half-price high-quality sushi at the bar in a comfortable and unpretentious environment.

If you see folks walking around with some dirt on their foreheads today, they proabably did it on purpose. It is Ash Wednesday, where Christians are supposed to fast, pray, repent after the debauchery of Mardi Gras and (Super Tuesday). So here' are a few debauch-free events for tonight:

Last night, a packed room of community members at LACMA listened attentively to Metro present nineteen options to serve the Westside. This first in a series of three public input meetings (two more meetings next week) was exciting -- wheels are in motion to get Los Angeles moving, even if that reality be around ten years from now.

Last week Monday, Metro released a series of service enhancements and additions including the new Gold Line schedule. In the additions bucket came two new Metro Rapid lines, both starting in Downtown.

Could you imagine Los Angeles without the Getty Museum? If that serene white chunk of Italian marble nestled above the 405 suddenly removed its bulk to some other parts, would you notice? Would you care?

Back in July, LAist and you, our dear readers, had some fun with Walk Score, a site that lets you punch in your address and spits out a walkability score for your neighborhood. Some Los Angeles neighborhoods earned a very respectable "walkers paradise" rating and some just plain sucked (that's what you get when you live on Quakertown Ave. in the northwest Valley). A recent Brookings Institute study finds that Los Angeles ranks 12th...

A new blog has appeared on the blogLAsphere called ditch the car, take the metro and blogger, John, has created, revised and tweaked his idea on LA's future subway transit. "My LA subway plan is based upon latent but unrealized relationships that organize Los Angeles," he explains in an early post. "The core of the system is built upon two parallel corridors (the Red and the Purple Lines) connecting three central business districts (Downtown,...

I love, love, LOVE hole in the wall ethnic food. I love the feeling of stumbling across a great little restaurant with passionate people working there to feed the locals. I also love finding a restaurant that has its own soul and unique take on a culture's food. Melanee Thai near Century City is the perfect example of the hole in the wall with its own voice. I had the great fortune of meeting...

North County just can't catch a break lately: another fatal freeway pileup near Antelope Valley today, this one involving eight vehicles and at least one fatality. The freeway has been closed in both directions. Things Not Worth Beating Someone With a Hammer For: six dollars? A group of males accosted and hammered a man in Canoga Park last night; then they blew the cash on penny candy and stamps. Not really, but six bucks??...

Those who were lucky enough to be in Century City this afternoon were treated to a mini-concert from...

Earlier this year, International Creative Management (ICM) and Creative Artists Agency (CAA) moved their offices from Beverly HIlls to within the city limits of Los Angeles in Century City. Score one for LA where expensive high power lunches turn in to tax revenue for city coffers (we're talking "a side of assorted mushrooms sells for $21 and a Wagyu rib-eye costs $98"). One problem though, Century City choices were slim for Hollywood agents: The...
