Local singer-songwriter Angela Correa's band Correatown has held this month's Monday residency at The Echo, and tonight is their final show before embarking next month on a European tour. Tonight, as always, local multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be jamming with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. Portland's own indie pop outfit Blind Pilot (LAist Interview) are poised to headline the Troubadour with none other than Rhode Island-bred folk act the Low Anthem (LAist Interview). And, lastly, local electro pop mastermind Bobby Birdman will be gracing Temporary Spaces 2 with Portland-based experimental electronic duo YACHT.

              

As you may have heard, the 29th annual Sunset Junction Street Festival is this weekend. "I've only attended the last three years, and never knew the festival back in [its] free days," says Brad Roberts from Radio Free Silver Lake. "So, frankly, the cost isn't as much of an issue for me as it is for others. The days of expecting a bankrupt state and federal government to provide something as ephemeral as a music festival, are, unfortunately, relics of the past. I have thoroughly enjoyed myself at the last three, all of which introduced me to many of the local bands who are regular favorites of mine. The cultural mix is a Los Angeles specialty and in spite of occasionally resembling a frying pan, everyone seems to really enjoy themselves, the variety of food available is impressive and the atmosphere remains laid back and So Cal."

              

It may be months late, but Little Radio's weekly Summer Camp series finally returns on Sunday, August 16th, with performances by The Living Things, Har Mar Superstar, and Restavrant as well as DJ sets by Ana Calderon, Daisy O'Dell, and Clifton Weaver. Summer Camp runs every Sunday thereafter until September 20th. "That's three Sundays in August, then 3 more in September," according to Little Radio. "Let's just call it September Camp. New location, new pool, new turf. Same water slide and shennanigans!"

Tonight Anaheim-based ska-infused pop outfit No Doubt will be headlining the Gibson Amphitheatre with Grammy-nominated pop punk outfit Paramore and Swedish new wave rockers the Sounds in tow. Oklahoma-based indie pop act Starlight Mints are poised to grace the Troubadour with none other than Castledoor. And, lastly, LA-based orchestral pop duo the Long Lost, a collaboration between Alfred Darlington (otherwise known as electronic mastermind Daedelus) and his wife Laura, will be performing at the Bootleg Theatre. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Wiltern to catch English musician Jarvis Cocker, best known as the front man of legendary Sheffield-based alternative rockers Pulp. LA-based indie pop outfit Little Joy (LAist Review) are slated to kick things off.

Tonight East Sussex-bred singer-songwriter Ed Harcourt (LAist Interview) will be performing at Bordello with none other than Nicole Simone. Local indie pop outfit Castledoor (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6) will be closing out a month-long residency at Spaceland. And, lastly, Portland's own indie pop songstress Casey Dienel, or rather White Hinterland, is poised to grace Echo Curio. LA-based noise/punk outfit Mika Miko (LAist Review) are poised to headline the Smell. LAist favorites the Strange Boys (LAist Review, #2) are slated to kick things off.

Tonight legendary English singer-songwriter Elvis Costello will be performing at Amoeba Music in Hollywood shortly after having performed an in-store at their San Francisco location. Amherst-based rockers Dinosaur Jr. will be taking on a two-night stint at the Troubadour. And, lastly, Chicago-bred alt-rockers Wilco (LAist Interview) will be kicking off a three-date stint at the Wiltern with Jonathan Wilson in tow. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch the penultimate night of LA-based indie pop act Castledoor's (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6) month-long residency. LAist favorites Local Natives (LAist Review) are slated to kick things off.

                     

There is something immensely comforting about residencies - month-long appearances by bands at a relatively small venue. By their very nature, they imply homeliness and a familiarity that is both welcoming and calm. The shows, for example, are almost always free and the headlining band, via their month stay, has a fantastic opportunity to endear themselves to fans and staff by their very repetitive nature.

Tonight Swedish alternative rock act A Camp, a solo side project of the Cardigans' vocalist Nina Persson, will be headlining the Troubadour. LA-based indie rockers Oliver Future are poised to take on the second night of their month-long residency at the Echo with experimental pop chanteuse Gliss in tow. And, lastly, local singer-songwriter Charlie Wadhams will be performing at the Silver Lake Lounge. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland, of course, to catch LAist favorites Castledoor (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6) continue their month-long residency. Long Beach's own pop songstress (and general lass) Jessica Dobson will be kicking things off under the pseudonym Deep Sea Diver (LAist Review).

Tonight Canadian indie rockers Metric (LAist Interview) will be headlining the Wiltern with former Death From Above 1979 drummer/vocalist Sebastien Grainger. Pasadena-based experimental indie pop outfit Jubilee Singers are poised to grace the Silver Lake Lounge. And, lastly, Oliver Future will be taking on yet another night of their Monday night residency with none other than Other Lives and Band of Skulls in tow. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch LA-based indie pop act Castledoor (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6), who will be continuing their month-long residency as well.

Tonight Eureka-bred singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles will be performing amongst a bevy of singer-songwriter-types at the Hotel Café. Baltimore/Virginia-based experimental psych trio Pontiak are poised to rock the Blue Monkey Bar & Lounge with Pocahaunted in tow. And, lastly, local singer-songwriter Willoughby will be kicking off a month-long residency at the Silver Lake Lounge. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch LA-based indie pop act Castledoor (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6), who will be kicking off a month-long residency as well. LAist favorites the Monolators (LAist Review, #2) are slated to close things out.

Tonight Palm Desert-bred rockers Eagles of Death Metal will be headlining the Henry Fonda Music Box. Brooklyn-based punk/dance duo Matt & Kim are slated to perform at the Troubadour with experimental rockers the Mae Shi (LAist Interview, Review, #2) in tow. LAist favorites the Soft Pack (formerly known as the Muslims) are slated to rock with San Diegan garage rock outfit Crocodiles at the Echo early on in the night. English electro-pop sensation Little Boots will be gracing the stage at Spaceland. And, lastly, local indie rockers Castledoor (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6) are poised to play Bordello. But we strongly suggest stopping by the Silver Lake Lounge to see electro-pop songstress Glasser.

Tonight NY-based indie rockers the Walkmen will be performing at the Henry Fonda Music Box with Baltimore's lugubrious duo Beach House. LA's own indie pop duo Castledoor (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6) is playing at the Echoplex for this week's edition of Check One, Twosday, which is still being sponsored by the now-defunct radio station Indie 103.1. Sean Carlson (of the Fuck Yeah Fest) is throwing a psych rock frenzy at the Smell, including performances by Long Beach-based Crystal Antlers and Ancestors. And, lastly, the one-woman army, otherwise known as Theresa Andersson (LAist Interview, Review), will be gracing the Hotel Café. But we strongly suggest checking into Spaceland, where Hawaiian-born singer-songwriter Sara Lov will be stopping through for the penultimate date of her month-long residency. LAist favorite Willoughby (LAist Review, #2) is slated to open.

                                    

As mentioned yesterday, earlier this month was the 2nd Annual Christmas Sweater Festival took place at The Echoplex (MySpace). The fundraiser, with proceeds benefiting Doctors Without Borders, featured a stellar lineup of rising stars from the local indie scene, including Amnion (MySpace), Castledoor (MySpace), The Pity Party (MySpace), The Deadly Syndrome (MySpace), The Happy Hollows (MySpace), and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (MySpace). It notably attracted two of the most prominent local scenester photographers, Ellei "Shadowscene" Johndro (MySpace) and Mark "The Cobrasnake" Hunter.

                                    

Earlier this month, the 2nd Annual Christmas Sweater Festival took place at The Echoplex (MySpace). Tonight Social Distortion (LAist Review) front man Mike Ness will be concluding an extensive sojourn at the El Rey Theatre. The Hotel Café is hosting the second night of a three-date "ho-ho-tel" holiday extravaganza, featuring singer-songwriter types like Rocco Deluca (LAist Review). Pehrspace will be throwing the first Pehr Spacecraft Faire, which integrates great pop music and fun crafts. And to further substantiate the claim that KROQ is suspended in the late 90s, the Offspring (LAist Review), Stone Temple Pilots and AFI will be headlining Almost Acoustic Christmas (LAist Review, #2) at the Gibson Amphitheatre. But no one in their right mind would pass up the Second Annual Christmas Sweater Festival at the Echoplex. This year the impressive bill features local indie favorites like the Deadly Syndrome (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4) the Happy Hollows (LAist Review, #2), the Pity Party (LAist Review, #2, #3), Castledoor (LAist Review, #2) and Amnion (LAist Review). It's almost too good to be true.

                      

Last month, there was a great night of performances by singer-songwriters that included Carina Round (MySpace) at the Hotel Cafe (MySpace) in Hollywood, as well as Tenlons Fort (MySpace) -- backed by members of Amnion (MySpace), Avi Buffalo (MySpace), Castledoor (MySpace), and The Monolators (MySpace) -- Jenny O. (MySpace), Angela Correa (MySpace), Rachael Cantu (MySpace), and Daniel Ahearn (MySpace) at Mr. T's Bowl (MySpace) in Highland Park. Opening at Mr. T's was rapper Trick Tracy -- aka Castledoor's Brandon Schwartzel.

                      

Last Friday, local indie favorites The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra (MySpace), Xu Xu Fang (MySpace), and Castledoor (MySpace) -- all three of whom have been previously featured here, here, and here -- performed in the courtyard of USC's Fisher Museum of Art.

There certainly won't be any complaints regarding the lack of interesting shows tonight. We've got the circus-like antics of Philly's Man Man at the Echoplex, which will be appropriately paired with the epic yet disjointed work of Long Beach's Crystal Antlers. The relatively clandestine Pehrspace promises an exemplary triumvirate of Los Angeles-based indie rockers, including Marvelous Toy, Divisadero and One Trick Pony. The show will serve as an album release party for the first two bands. And it's beginning to seem like Jon Brion is always slumped over a piano at Largo. However, the big surprise of the night is the not-so-secret Spiritualized show at the Echo. Thanks to Myspace Secret Shows the concert will be free, but upon a first-come first-served basis. Those willing to brave the inordinate crowds and chaos will likely be treated to an unforgettable experience, which will presumably revolve around 2008's A&E. As much as we like Spiritualized (and standing in serpentine lines), we suggest you head over to catch Silverlake-based indie-pop maestros Castledoor at the Lyric Hyperion Theater. The band will be premiering the new music video for their leading track "Dumpster Diving," as well as affording fans a special set. Tenlons Fort, who appear to be straddling Austin and LA right now, are slated to open the night, heading directly over from their Little Radio-sponsored Park[ing] Day LA performance at 4th & Main in Downtown.

                     

Last month, Joe Fielder, whose local music blog Radio Free Silver Lake has been in existence since February 2006, celebrated the second anniversary of his monthly Let's Independent! event, at Boardner's (MySpace) in Hollywood, with performances by Death to Anders (MySpace), The Savages (MySpace), and Xu Xu Fang (MySpace).

Earlier this month, local band The Sweet Hurt (MySpace) celebrated the release of their EP with a release party at Pehrspace (MySpace) in Echo Park, with Evan Slamka from Marjorie Fair (MySpace), Liz Pappademas (MySpace), and Alex Lilly from Obi Best (MySpace), formerly known as Colorforms (MySpace).

            

Last Saturday, author Paul G. Maziar celebrated the release of his new sold-out book (MySpace) with a West Coast book release party at {open} (MySpace) in Long Beach.

                            

Two weeks ago, local bands Castledoor (MySpace) and The Watson Twins (MySpace) performed for First Fridays (MySpace) at The Natural History Museum in Exposition Park.

                                                  

Nobody better covers the LA indie music scene than the local blogs, which include LA-Underground, Radio Free Silver Lake, Rock Insider, You Set The Scene, Squaregirls, Aquarium Drunkard, Classical Geek Theatre, Amateur Chemist, and the now-defunct Buzz Bands. Besides spotlighting up-and-coming artists and posting concert photos, many of those blogs regularly present shows -- Radio Free Silverlake's Let's Independent! have included The Happy Hollows (MySpace), The Deadly Syndrome (MySpace), Castledoor (MySpace), and Everest (MySpace).
