Evidently B-L-A-K-E spells relief for the Dodgers. After going on the disabled list on April 25 for a left elbow infection, third baseman Casey Blake was reinstated today. To make room infielder Russ Mitchell was optioned back to Triple-A Albuquerque.
Dodgers Get a Little Relief at Third Base
The Ballad of Casey Blake's Elbow
Blake was sent to the hospital during the Dodgers’ game against the Florida Marlins on Monday for what seemed like a swollen bursa sac on his elbow - olecranon bursitis to be exact. Not only did it swell, like a “big squash” according to Conte, but Blake came down with a fever of 102 degrees that would not go away.
Better Late Than Never for the Dodgers
Clayton Kershaw was lights out once again needing only a Russell Martin double in the eighth inning to beat the New York Mets 1-0 and earn his 10th win of the season.
“He’s pitched some great great games this year,” manager Joe Torre said. “He’s a special kid. He’s got a great calm about him.”
And that calm persisted despite some bumps.
Billingsley Completes Dodgers Victory over Giants
After the hijinks that occurred in the first two games, a palette-cleansing pitchers’ duel between the Dodgers and San Francisco Giants was what the doctor ordered to release the toxins brewing amongst the Dodger faithful for the last week. It also helped that Dodgers’ starter Chad Billingsley (W, 7-5) tossed a 125-pitch complete game shutout in the Dodgers 2-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants breaking the Dodgers six-game losing streak.
The Beard and the Mythos
Throughout history the beard has been the symbol of masculinity and virility. Zeus and Poseidon are always pictured with one. The book of Leviticus forbids a man to harm the edges of his beard. Hockey players grow out their beards during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. For the Dodgers there’s Casey Blake.
Dodgers Extend Win Streak To Nine
The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Houston Astros 7 - 3 on Andre Ethier Bobblehead Night in front of a sell out crowd of 55,662 to extend the longest current winning streak in Major League Baseball to nine games and sweep the two game Astros series.
Blake's Single Seals Dodgers Victory Walk-Off Style
For the 10th time this season the Dodgers have won a game in walk-off fashion leading the Majors.
Tonight Casey Blake in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Florida Marlins broke a 3-3 tie with an RBI bloop single with the bases loaded to give the Dodgers the 4-3 win.
"The real credit goes to the at-bats leading up to that," Blake said after the game. "I'm just trying to put the bat on the ball there, and I found a hole."
Casey Blake Agrees to a 3-Year Contract with the Dodgers
Dylan Hernandez at the LA Times is reporting that the Dodgers have come to an contract agreement with third baseman Casey Blake. Blake came over to the Dodgers before the trading deadline in late July as one of the cogs to help the Dodgers make their playoff run. The agreement is reportedly for three years and $17 million. At the age of 35, this is Blake's first free agent contract. Also noted in this story is that the Dodgers are also signing infielder Mark Loretta.
The 500th Dodger Third Baseman Since Adrian Beltre
The Dodgers just acquired Cleveland Indians' third baseman Casey Blake for minor league pitcher Jon Meloan and catcher Carlos Santana. Blake, who turns 35 next month, is hitting .289 with an OPS of .830 and OPS+ of 119 (an OPS+ of 100 being average) and will be a free agent at the end of the season. He will be dressed in tonight's game against the Washington Nationals.
