It's time to squeeze every possible inch of space on our already-congested freeways for use at their maximum potential. On the 110 and 10 Freeways, the plan of attack is called the ExpressLane project, and while it's kicking off a little later than expected, it will have its ground breaking today in Gardena, making way for toll lanes on about 25 miles of freeway.
Toll Lanes Coming to the 10 and 110 Freeways. Will You Pay to Play?
Want to Drive the Carpool Lane Alone? OK, But It'll Cost You
If you've ever stared longingly as cars whiz past you in the carpool lane, wishing you could join them but still not wanting to have to make small talk with a passenger, you may soon find that you have the best of both worlds -- but it won't be cheap.
Carpool and Bus Lanes Coming to the I-5 in Burbank
Ground was broken yesterday on the $69.2 million project to bring new 4.4 miles in each direction of bus and carpool lanes to the Golden State (I-5) Freeway in Burbank between the Hollywood Freeway (SR-170) and the Buena Vista Street interchange.
Steps to Tear Down Sunset Boulevard Bridge over 405 Freeway Begin Friday
When you take your drive, walk or bike over 405 Freeway Sunset Boulevard bridge on Friday, it will be the last one before some traffic hell over the next 20 months begin. As part of Metro and Caltrans' project to bring a carpool lane to the Sepulveda Pass, three bridges will be taken down and reconstructed. Luckily, the artery won't be totally cut off as officials will work on the bridge in segments, allowing for traffic to continue during reconstruction.
ExpressLanes Project Could be Delayed
The ExpressLanes project, which someday will allow solo car drivers to share carpool lanes for a price along the 110 and 10 freeways, could be delayed when the Metro Board votes on a request to do so today. At issue is the 10 Freeway between the 605 and 710 freeways. Unlike the 110 Freeway, the 10 doesn't have two carpool, or hot, lanes. If Metro is given time to add one of these lanes, the ExpressLanes project would be more successful when it debuts. The project is a federally funded pilot project and the federal government has approved the time extension.
405 Freeway Construction Begins Next Week with Full Closures
Last week it was announced that beginning January 12th and lasting three years, Caltrans and Metro would be embarking on the final phases of putting in a carpool lane, among other freeway fixes, between the 10 and 101. Caltrans this week announced specifics about what to expect next week and it is a full nighttime closure.
New Carpool Lanes Open on SB 405; $167 Million Project Almost Done
Carpool lanes added to the Southbound 405 Freeway as part of a $167 million project were opened up this weekend, in the hopes this will relieve some congestion on the road. "Caltrans workers Saturday took out barricades on the southbound 405 freeway's carpool lanes from the Interstate 10 Freeway interchange south to the 90 Freeway," explains CBS2, adding that the last step was to replace the surfacing material in the center divider.
Carpool Lanes on I-5 Open Friday
Good news for those who come into and leave Los Angeles everyday via the 5 freeway from the north county: those carpool lanes that have been under construction for a while are opening Friday. The lanes are a first for the 5 freeway in Los Angeles County and is part of a larger scheme to go carpool lane crazy in that part of town. Future lanes will connect the project to the 118 and 170 arteries with plans for a direct carpool connector at the I-5/14 Interchange and a lane down the 170 to the 134.

For Whom the Road Tolls
Late last week the MTA board announced plans to convert some of LA County's car-pool lanes on heavily traveled freeways to toll lanes. The Daily News reported thatUnder the plan, solo drivers could use the car-pool lanes if they pay a toll. Vehicles with two or more occupants - which currently use the lanes for free - would also pay a toll, although less than solo drivers. It's unclear how the plan would apply...
