LAist Film Calendar: Italians, Honey Bunny Redux & D.W. Griffith

How do you make alt-porn even alt-ier? The Echo Park Film Center knows, with Honey Bunny v2, a video-remix of 2008's Honey Bunny. Re-imagineer Margie Schnibbe is on hand for every moan & groan, and for all the would-be Jeremih's out there, it's her birthday. If you prefer your alt-film on the straight and narrow, EPFC also hosts Los Angeles As A Character, a series of experimental shorts that slice & dice our city into delectable bites: some friendly, some alienated, others just plain confused. To take it WAY back, EPFC teams up with Los Angeles Filmforum for D.W. Griffith in California, a program of ultra-rare reels from film pioneer D.W. Griffith, produced locally before he went off & produced the ultra-popular (and ultra-racist) Birth of a Nation. No stranger to controversy, Griffith takes on evolution & the decimation of Native American populations in these shorts, as well as showcase early cinematic techniques & melodrama.

I'm still not sure why Watchmen was pilloried by so many. Considering how many adaptations are butchered by filmmakers, it was refreshing to see how closely Zack Snyder adhered to the source material by Alan Moore (except for, of course, the ending). Sure it may have been a little obtuse for people unfamiliar with the graphic novel, but so what, right? Anyway, today's DVD release is a treasure trove for Watchmen fans. For less than $30 you get the integration of The Black Freighter into Snyder's director's cut as well as:

Rarely do major film studios finance films as ambitious as Watchmen and with the middling success the film enjoyed, it's likely to become rarer still. Which is a damn, damn shame. Zach Snyder's adaptation of Alan Moore's seminal graphic novel has its share of issues, but he did manage to get Dr. Manhattan, Rorschach and Nite Owl (II) just about perfect which is a huge triumph. Watchmen is a film that deserved greater financial support from the public. Let's hope it finds that support on DVD. I mean seriously, do we want more films like Watchmen or more shit like Transformers 2: Revenge of Shit. Vote with your dollars, people!

Weekend Movie Guide: Watch This!

The summer blockbluster season is starting awfully early this year as Watchmen hits theaters. By most accounts, it's a faithful adaptation of Alan Moore's seminal graphic novel. The question is, "Does it have an audience beyond the faithful?" I, for one, am excited to see it. The Fanning family has officially replaced the infamous Culkens as little Elle Fanning stars in Phoebe in Wonderland. Am I alone in thinking pushing your kid into Hollywood constitutes child abuse? Everlasting Moments is the exact opposite of Watchmen: a Swedish film taking place at the turn of the century. Talk about counter-programming! Shuttle is just the kind of low-budget indie thriller that deserves a larger audience than it will ultimately get. Give it a shot.

A Word or 36: Baseball season is just starting up folks, am not sure how comprehensively I should be posting gametimes on TV Junkie. Weeknights I will be putting gametimes for the Dodgers and Angels here. Any feedback is appreciated. Last Night Summary: So 50 Cent cancelled his appearance on Conan a couple hours before the show because he felt he was coming down with a cold? Stern and Gaffigan were good as usual on Conan. Also: "The Office" was fantastic; I was amazed at how long Colbert allowed his druggie guest to ramble; kid scientists on Letterman were typically cute and funny and I'm hoping for a new set of stupid human tricks...

After being able to sit with the big three network forays into sci-fi this season, it is safe to say that we'll probably only be sticking with one: Threshold. The Carla Gugino led show isn't a winner firing on all cylinders like the best sci-fi on TV right now, Battlestar Galactica, but its powerful cast and fast moving episodes with a slow-burning alien problem is the best of the bunch. It does feel a little x-files-ish with its mysterious "infected" du jour concept right now but three episodes in, we're hopeful that the larger overarching story is going to take some compelling and surprising turns before the season is over. Besides that, they have spent the early episodes focusing mainly on Gugino and Brian Von Holt. With Brent Spiner, Charles Dutton, Peter Dinklage and Rob Benedict filling out the rest of the regulars, there's a lot more good acting to be had.

Like most other movie goers this weekend, we saw Sin City. We loved it. As unashamed comic book nerds, the idea of a direct graphic novel adaptation of the Frank Miller classics was simply spectacular to watch. Cinematical thinks "The Hard Goodbye" was the best of the stories and we agree although it did run a little longer than necessary. We can forgive that though because of Carla Gugino. Mmmm, Carla Gugino. We're highly recommending the flick, particularly if you're a fan of low plot, high action, comic style storytelling. Think Kill Bill on acid and with a lot more focus on one style.

Speaking of Sin City, we weren't invited to last night's premiere of the film at Mann National in Westwood but, by the look of things, all the rest of Hollywood was. Every time we find something about the flick, we're surprised by another actor or actress being in the movie that we didn't previously know about. The premiere revealed Carla Gugino is in the film. She plays Lucille. This is very exciting. We're still mourning the untimely demise of Karen Sisco.
