Tonight Austin-bred duo the Long Tangles will be performing at the Silver Lake Lounge. Local shoegaze outfit Franco Near Death is poised to take on the Satellite, formerly known as Spaceland. And, lastly, experimental electro pop duo Captain Ahab will be gracing the hole-and-corner Pehrspace. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Smell in Downtown to catch local singer-songwriter Devon Williams.

Tonight In Rock: Femi Kuti, Circle Jerks, Juana Molina, Starfucker
Tonight award-winning Nigerian musician Femi Kuti will be headlining the Hollywood Bowl with Santigold (LAist Review) and Raphael Saadiq (LAist Interview). Legendary punk rockers the Circle Jerks are poised to perform at the Key Club. And, lastly, Argentine folk songstress Juana Molina will be gracing the Make Music Pasadena Festival, which is set to take place at a variety of venues across Old Town Pasadena, with none other than Portland-based singer-songwriter Mirah. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Smell in Downtown to catch Portland-based electro-pop act Starfucker (LAist Review, #2). LAist favorites Captain Ahab, Atole and Halloween Swim Team are all slated to share the tiny stage.

LAist Watches: King Kong
What should we tell you about Kong? That the hour and fifteen minutes after Jack, Ann, Denham and the rest arrive at Skull Island are not for the weak hearted? That the film is shot beautifully? That there are moments when the lighting is so stark, the simple movie effects so classic, that you wish it was in black and white? That the strongest performances are by Kyle Chandler as the incredibly cartoonish Bruce Baxter and Andy Serkis as the completely animated Kong? All true.
Mysterious Wonderland
As August draws to a close, blogland seems to be on hiatus, leaving us with re-runs. But repeats can be rewarding. For instance, LA journalist Rodger Jacobs posts a 1999 article about his experiences writing a documentary about porn legend John Holmes. How could you not love an essay that begins with:
