OVGuide.com - The Best Site You've Never Heard Of

Can I just say that after giving up TV, I have had a bitch of a time trying to find Family Guy and Sex and the City episodes (which I have recently gotten re-addicted to over the Christmas holiday) online. I found a solution (and something else to get addicted to) – OVGuide.com. OVG is now on my Firefox toolbar – and that's a big deal to me, though maybe not you because you don't know how important something has to be to me to land a spot on that toolbar. more ›

Enough With the 'Dot Orgy,' KPCC!

Enough With the 'Dot Orgy,' KPCC!

I've written e-mails, made phone calls, and pledged. I even wrote a two-page essay at their 3-hour (paid) market research session at the Hyatt. And still, every morning I'm summoned from my slumber by a soft voice announcing in code-like rhyme that my public radio station is having an orgy on the Web. Sixty-three degrees at seven-thirty-three, on eighty-nine-Point-three, KP-CC, I'm Steve Julian.... Online at K-P....C-C dot O-R-G. "Dot O-R-G?" You mean "dot org," I... more ›

The Most Uncomfortable Bus in Los Angeles

The Most Uncomfortable Bus in Los Angeles

I've been on some damn crowded, sardine-in-the can, packed-to-the-brim buses before; such as the 200 down Alvarado or the 704 down Sunset. Both exasperating, yet, nothing in comparison to the Pico-Union/Echo Park DASH on a Sunday afternoon. "Can I ask, why are you taking pictures?" a woman asked me as I awkwardly moved my arm around in what must have looked like a modern dance as I tried to get an angle for a... more ›

This Week in Theatre: Dolly Parton Inspires Small Town Waitress

This Week in Theatre: Dolly Parton Inspires Small Town Waitress

LA’s theatre scene is packed with good stuff this week: Dolly Parton serves as muse; a Korean family’s road trip goes wrong; and a bunch of people sing about chess at the Ford. So without further ado, here are LAist’s five theater picks for this week: Journey to Dollywood Jolene is a small-town waitress who idolizes obsesses over Dolly Parton. When a stranger’s car breaks down in town, her life, a rival co-worker’s, and their... more ›

Metro Monthly Passes Must Be Hot

Metro Monthly Passes Must Be Hot

Kermit the Frog was so right -- "It's not easy being green." Yesterday I tried buying my first Monthly Metro Pass ever. I failed. I thought it would be easy to spend 62-bucks in this town. But apparently a Metro bus pass for the month is a hot item in the Valley. My local liquor store was sold out. Same story for Ralphs. Pavilions too. Then I called a different Ralphs, this time the... more ›

Rachael Ray Got Me Laid: A Guide to Pasta Puttanesca

Rachael Ray Got Me Laid: A Guide to Pasta Puttanesca

Sexy Pasta. Can I make a confession? I've kinda got a soft spot for Rachael Ray's recipes. Not the woman herself - while I don't detest her enough to join a hate club or anything, I don't find her particularly witty or interesting or original. Now, Tony Bourdain - THAT'S my idea of a chef-slash-television-personality! And the fact that he'd probably cut me for calling him a television personality makes me love him even... more ›

Cleaning Up San Francisco

Cleaning Up San Francisco

I am a complete nerd. I’ve always been enthralled by scorekeeping. I always wanted to learn how to do it so I could keep track of who does what and be able to capture everything that happens in a game on paper. So years later I can look at this sheet of paper and sort of relive the game. more ›

The Coffee Buzz

When art, technology and style meets coffee, you can only imagine the kinds of people that come out of the woodwork to take part in such a hybrid experience. And today is no different, as LAist continues our travels across Los Angeles county, using an innocent little generic coffee store in an innocent way so that we may see the innocent people living their innocent lives with said innocent little generic coffee shop as the backdrop to such drama. more ›
