Suspect in Model's Murder Found Dead in Canada

After a manhunt lasting several days and crossing the border into his native Canada, investment banker turned VH1 reality television contestant Ryan Alexander Jenkins appears to have committed suicide, according to KTLA. "Officials believe [he] took his own life in the hotel room in Hope, British Columbia where his body was found." Jenkins had been charged this week in Orange County with the murder of his wife and former model Jasmine Fiore, whose finger- and toothless body was discovered crammed in a suitcase abandoned in a Buena Park dumpster last weekend. Jenkins, who filed the missing person report for Fiore, has been on the run since before Fiore was identified by the serial numbers on her breast implants, and escaped to Canada on Wednesday. A warrant for his arrest was issued last week.

Manhunt Continues for Model's Murderer

Reports yesterday out of Toronto indicating that murder suspect Ryan Alexander Jenkins was arrested after arriving to the Canadian city by air turned out to be a miscue after authorities determined the had the wrong man. The search continues across the border for the reality show contestant who is believed to have killed his wife, model and Playboy rep Jasmine Fiore, then left her mutilated body in a suitcase in Buena Park dumpster before reporting her missing and fleeing.

Reality TV Contestant Now a Suspect in Murder of Model

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Ryan Jenkins, the missing husband of Jasmine Fiore. He was reportedly last seen in Bellingham, Washington and is thought to have walked over the border into Canada. TMZ says police obtained a "Ramey Warrant," which they explain to be "an arrest warrant that allows police to bypass the D.A. and go directly to the judge... In order to get a Ramey Warrant, police must prove there is probable cause to believe the suspect committed a felony. In this case we're told a judge decided there was probable cause to believe Jenkins was involved in the murder of his wife, Jasmine Fiore." The warrant will bring in the help from Canadian authorities.

Reality Show Contestant Wanted for Questioning in Model Killing May have Fled to Canada

It is now believed that Jasmine Fiore's husband has left the country for his own, Canada, possibly by foot, reports TMZ. The LA Times confirms that the manhunt has moved to Washington and the Canadian border where Ryan Jenkins owns and operates a company in Calgery. Apparently, Jenkins' SUV and boat were abandoned near the border, prompting a wide search of the area that turned up no results.

Travel to Mexico, Canada? New Passport Rules on Monday

In the final phase of a federal security transportation initiative, our borders are tightening even more beginning Monday. Those traveling by land or sea, will have to present a Passport or the newish Passport Cards when re-entering the states from Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Bermuda. Similar rules have already been in effect for air travel after September 11th prompted the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. What if you mess up and don't have either after a weekend of debauchery across neighboring international lines? We will not deny entry to noncompliant travelers," a spokeswoman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection told the Chicago Tribune. However, those travelers will probably be put into secondary inspection as officers verify their identity.

Pencil This In: MOCA Grand Prix, Lebowski Fest and Oh, Canada

Because there's just too much fun to be had tonight, we couldn't decide on our favorite Pencil pick. So we chose two:

Rock from the great cold Canadian north conquered the Troubadour Wednesday night, starting off with Vancouver's finest Mother Mother, who took the stage fronted not by one person or even two, but three lead singers. The most obvious of the three was the lead guitarist who looked like a cross between Billy Idol and a storm trooper (and I mean that in a good way) was also dressed in black with a red vest. He was flanked on either side by two women, played the keyboards and synthesizer respectively, looked terrific in their little black dresses.

Meet Wintersleep: Canadian Rockers Who Want To Welcome You to the Night Sky

Supporting their third album, Welcome to the Night Sky, Nova Scotia's own dreamy, fuzzed out rockers Wintersleep will be playing the Echoplex tomorrow night. Wintersleep came together when drummer, Loel Campbell and Paul Murphy, guitarist, sat down at their 15th floor apartment in downtown Halifax and decided to produce some of Paul's quieter songs that didn't really fit into his current band's aggressive sound. The pair quickly compiled a catalog of songs in apartment and were soon looking for additional musicians, which they filled in with friends from the local scene. Jon Samuel, Paul Murphy, and Tim D'eon were kind enough to speak to us from Austin over the weekend. Here is some of what was said.

Anjulie @ The Roosevelt, 1/28/09

Already anointed by many as a star in the making, even though the release of her self-titled debut album is still months away, Toronto born singer/songwriter Anjulie proved worthy of the early accolades with a first-rate 40 minute performance Wednesday night.

First Canada has to beat us to the punch by celebrating their Thanksgiving an entire month before ours. Now their "nation's birthday" is three days before ours? Like that's a coincidence. Way to steal our thunder, neighbor to the north.

From the Graph Humor and Song Chart site, GraphJam, here's one way we see the rest of the country (& Canada... by the way, Happy Canada Day!).

It's hard to compete with St. Patrick's Day, something Jason Collett can testify to as he played to a thin crowd numbering in the few dozen at the Troubadour. It seemed the allure of corned beef and Guinness was just too much.

10,500 people packed into the Crenshaw Christian Faith Dome this morning for a very special service for fallen LAPD SWAT Officer Randal Simmons. Police officers from as far as Canada have come to Los Angeles to honor him. More waited outside and people began to gather on the streets along the procession route.

Last week I met up with Tony Pierce and some of his friends at the best Downtown bar to catch up and have some drinks. After talk about pimps blogging in Compton and strippers getting fondled in Canada, Tony turned to me and asked, “So you been writing about any guys lately?”

Back in 2004, Congress approved the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. It dictated that in order to cross the border back into the country from either of the United State's two neighbors, a passport would be required. Today, that law goes into effect.

Beginning today, Americans returning from Mexico and Canada must show valid passports, a sharp departure from previous regulations that let U.S. citizens use only a driver license as proof of residency.

Many Angeleno's in the tech sector say the next surge of technology...

The Malibu fire is now 25% contained. At least 35 structures have been destroyed and thousands were forced to flee as wind whipped flames ravaged the coastal town. The cause of the blaze is not known at this time, but crews haven't ruled out CNN's Glen Beck. In other fire-related news, two people died this morning when a house fire ripped through their Pasadena home. The cause of the fire is unknown. A woman...

Following a flap from an LA Times article that found 60,000 LAUSD students attend school within 500 feet of a freeway, the school district is looking into ways it can reduce the health hazards for kids close to pollution-filled freeways. Maybe the school district can use the $53 million in funds they're trying to recoup to build domes over playgrounds. Thousands of birds and an immeasurable amount of fish have died as a result...

Volume at the Los Angeles port, the biggest in the U.S., is expected to drop for the first time in four years. Experts attributed the decline to the slumping housing market and continued loss of confidence in imported goods. I don't pretend to be an expert, but we'll cheer up when they stop putting plastic in their toys. A woman was arrested and charged with murder, stemming from an incident in which she allegedly...

On Monday evening, the winner of the 2nd annual Polaris Music Prize will be announced. This is not earth shattering news because many don’t even know what it is. The Polaris Music Prize is Canada’s equivalent to the U.K.’s Mercury Prize. It is an award given to the best Canadian album of the year, regardless of genre, sales, or record label. The winner receives $20,000 cash and a bevy of publicity. The initial jury...

On Sunday, one of my buddies and I went downtown to the Oprheum Theater on Broadway for a taping of Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam. What can I say? I'm a sucker for lowbrow comedy. So, picture my surprise when after about 30 minutes of the stylings of such comics as Damn Fool (yes, that's his name), host D.L. Hughley came onto the stage and announced the final comedian.

The NHL 2007-08 season officially got underway last night with an exhibition game between the Stanley Cup Champion (?!) Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and your Los Angeles Kings. Brian Willsie put the Kings ahead with five minutes to go in the game, and the Kings held on to beat the Ducks 5-4. Sure, exhibition games mean nothing, but we’re not going to see a lot of King’s victories this year, so let’s savor the...
