If sipping martinis and strolling through the Getty's newly improved Central Garden is too stuffy for your taste, the Angeles National Forest is announcing a reopening for Memorial Day weekend too. About 41,000 acres will be open for hiking, picnicking and camping.
Angeles National Forest Reopens 41K Acres for Memorial Day Weekend
Lightning in a Bottle Announces 2012 Fest Lineup
If Coachella and Burning Man had a bass addicted, illegitimate love child that creation would be the Do LaB's Lightning in a Bottle. Taking place a short 40 minutes from L.A. in the remarkably desolate Oak Canyon Ranch, the festival is a mix of art, culture and music.
Arrests Made at Occupy Long Beach Site, Participants Claim Police Are Confusing, Harassing Them
Occupy Long Beach kicked off on Saturday, and by the following night, the protesters had already experienced several unpleasant interactions with Long Beach police, resulting in two arrests and other citations.
A Park a Day: Topanga State Park
July is National Parks & Recreation Month, and all month long LAist will be featuring a hand-selected park a day to showcase just a few of the wonderful recreation spaces--big or small--in the Los Angeles area.
100 Miles of Trail Damaged in the Station Fire to Reopen This Month
The Forest Service plans to reopen more than 100 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails that have been closed since August 2009's Station Fire. Numerous trails in the Angeles National Forest in the mountains east of the 2 will be reopened by next Monday, May 16, the U.S. Forest Service's Sherry Rollman told Altadena Patch.
Lightning in a Bottle is Back, this Time in Orange County
You could say it's a hybrid of Coachella and Burning Man. A four day festival on a large chunk of open space featuring DJs and bands with a heavy dose of art and things like yoga and organic food. Now in its official fifth year at new location in Irvine -- it went on hiatus last year -- Lightning in a Bottle will bring back the crowds and its usual good-times vibe with it.
Weekend Trip: Camping at Two Harbors, Catalina Island
This week LAist reader and Flickr featured photos contributor Ryo Chiba shared some amazing shots from his recent camping trip near Two Harbors on Catalina Island which is about a one hour's boat ride from Long Beach or San Pedro. We liked them so much, we had to ask more about his trip.
Topanga, Malibu Creek & 5 Other Local State Parks Affected by Service Cuts
When Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger saved state parks from closing, it didn't mean he saved them from service cuts.
Today, state park officials announced how they would deal with a $14.2 million budget cut: Superintendents for each district (for example, many of L.A.'s nearby parks are in the Angeles District, beaches in the OC and Ventura County are in the Orange Coast and Channel Coast districts, respectively) had to share the sacrifice and find cuts on a park-by-park basis.
Campgrounds Reopen at Joshua Tree National Park for Fall Season
Winters can get pretty hot in the Coachella Valley, so you can guess how excruciating Joshua Tree National Park is in the summer. Visitation actually gets so low, officials close a number of campgrounds. However, as we head into cooler temperatures, park Superintendent Curt Sauer announced that campgrounds would reopen today.
Station Fire Status: 87% Contained, What Trails/Campgrounds Were Spared
Fire crews have contained the Station Fire to 87%, up 6 points since Friday evening and are optimistic the fire will be knocked down soon. However, officials have extended the expected containment date from tomorrow to Saturday. Acreage burned still stands at 160,557, or over 250 square miles.
State Parks Update: Are They Closing or What?
State Park officials said today that a closure list will not be released today and will likely come next week. "There is a list and it's being reviewed," explained Sheryl Watson, an Information Officer with California State Parks, over the phone. Amid a mass budget crunch this summer, the legislature and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger slashed the department's budget so much, that it will potentially close around 100 parks.
Camping Fees More Expensive than Cheap Hotels
Now that officials have been forced to raise fees at state parks in order to save some of them, a thrifty blogger at the Orange County Register's OC Deals blog makes a good observation. Looking into beachfront family campsites with hookups at Bolsa Chica State Beach, Doheny and San Clemente is running $60 to $65. "I recently bought a new tent and cot to go back to nature, and save money on vacations by camping, instead of staying in hotels. But the world’s gone topsy-turvy, folks. You can rent a room this week in the fancy Wyndham hotel in New Orleans for $58 a night, but you can’t camp in a state campground on the beach for that! Incredible." Still, we rather camp.
Parking, Camping Fees Raise at State Parks
It used to be $7, then it was $10 and as of yesterday, parking at Malibu Creek State Park is $12. The same price adjustment can be found at Malibu Lagoon and Leo Carillo thanks to nearly $39 million in state budget cuts that are forcing state park officials to look at every avenue for revenue. Some parks are expected to close, though many could be saved through partnerships with communities and businesses.
State Parks To Increase Day Use & Camping Fees to Keep More Parks Open
In order to keep some--not all--state parks open, California State Parks will be increasing fees beginning next Monday. The move comes after Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger slashed nearly $39 million from parks last month in the state budget. Officials say that it is likely some parks will close, but are seeking to partner with communities and corporations to keep some open.
Trail Reopens at Joshua Tree National Park after Wildfire
After a wildfire swept through a portion of Joshua Tree National Park last May, officials announced today that the Lost Horse Mine Trail has been reopened. "While the Lost Horse Mine Trail is being re-opened, park visitors are urged to remain on the trail while hiking through the area," a statement read. "The pace of germination and post-fire re-growth [of fragile desert plants] has been slowed somewhat due to the lack of summer rainfall and generally dry conditions across the park." Speaking of dry conditions, swarms of bees in search of moisture have caused the closure of the Jumbo Rocks Campground until further notice. Bees have been actively moisture in trash cans, bathrooms and off human skin.
Weekend Road Trip: Monterey Bay Aquarium & Hearst Castle
One weekend, the Pacific Coast Highway and two California must-sees.
LAist Weekender: San Simeon
Though it may not have the scenic majesty of Morro Bay or the woodsy seclusion of Big Sur, San Simeon State Park is one of the quiet wonders of the California seaside. Located just a few miles south of fabled Hearst Castle, San Simeon offers two campground sites (San Simeon or Washburn) where you can set up home base for a long weekend. It's a short walk to cool, lightly populated beaches where you might stumble across an entire pack of elephant seals stretching out in the sun. You can also hike several miles of trails, some of which descend into seasonal wetlands, and others that plateau on top of vast seaside vistas.
A 'Greener' Coachella? Lightning in a Bottle Festival Starts Tomorrow
The Do Lab made a name for themselves by designing mesmerizing interactive art installations for huge, multi-day music festivals such as Coachella and Vegoose, but they have also been producing their own music and art festival, Lightning in a Bottle, for several years now, and the 2008 edition kicks off tomorrow at Live Oak campground (near Santa Barbara) and runs all the way through Monday.
Photos: Lucent Dossier Takes The Do LaB's Events to the Next Level
-->Lucent Dossier is the spectacular LA-based vaudeville circus that highlighted The Do LaB's awesome Lucent L'Amour Valentine's Day party last month. You may have even seen them performing at the official Grammy Awards party (no, that wasn't Cirque du Soleil, it was Lucent Dossier).
Labor Day Camping on Catalina Island
So I have this pretty fun tradition (aside from Three Rivers in the holidays), of going camping at Two Harbors on Catalina Island every Labor Day Weekend. The tradition originally began as a Jugglers' Festival, oddly enough, of which I was only a part due to my friend and her husband who are amateur jugglers, and because they are friends with some fairly accomplished ones. There was a juggling volleyball game on one of...
