Last week there were three stabbings on Skid Row within four days. The good news was that they occurred under a surveillance camera. The bad news was that the camera wasn't working.
Most of the LAPD Surveillance Cameras Downtown Are Useless
Stop! In the Name of Stop Sign Cameras at Santa Monica Mountains Parks
Angelenos are infamous for their failure to come to a complete stop at stop signs, often practicing the lazy California roll. The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority is well-aware of L.A.'s poor driving habits and has taken measures in three Santa Monica Mountains parks to put a stop to vehicles.
Prop 8 Hearing Today about Cameras in the Courtroom
Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker of the U.S. District Court in Northern California today will hear testimony from both sides about letting cameras into the courtroom in the case against Prop 8, which banned gay marriage in California. Walker is expected to make a decision on Friday, after receiving public input via letters and petitions (we posted about one yesterday).
Behind the Scenes of the LAPD's Newest Surveillance Cameras
When it comes to police surveillance cameras, Los Angeles is still way behind New York City, who feeds thousands of live images to their centralized Real Time Crime Center. Here in LA, MacArthur Park and the Hollywood Entertainment District have had cameras for a few years and now the Valley can claim home to them too.
LAPD Surveillance Cameras Go Live in Sherman Oaks
Sherman Oaks isn't exactly a haven for crime, but that didn't stop business owners, who were constantly plagued with break ins and graffiti, to band together and pony up money to the LAPD for surveillance cameras like those on Hollywood Boulevard.
Man Killed in Hit & Run Across from MacArther Park
A 49-year-old man was struck and killed at 8:20 p.m. last night when standing in an alley near 6th & Grand View Streets. "Investigation have very few leads and there are no description of the suspect vehicle or the driver," the LAPD said in a statement. MacArthur Park has various live-feed cameras like Hollywood Blvd. (and soon Ventura Blvd.) placed in the park, but lack of funding for maintenance led to inoperable cameras earlier this year. Officers at the local police station who are in charge of monitoring the cameras could not immediately say if the cameras were working or not this afternoon. If they were working, could they have helped this case any?
Where To Commit Crime in LA: MacArthur Park, Again
In 2004, live-feed cameras, paid for by donations, were installed in MacArthur Park. Police said crime went down. Then the cameras started not working, maintenance was not happening. Crime is supposedly on the increase.
You're walking in an alley and then..
You're walking in a dark alley. Maybe you are just walking. Maybe you are spraying graffiti. Flash. Beep! Beep! "Leave now!" a voice from somewhere in the dark says....
What Those LAPD Cameras See On Hollywood Blvd.
This was taken on a field trip last year with Councilman Jack Weiss' office to see the LAPD cameras in action. The purpose: to see if this was something fit for any areas in his district. When I took out my camera, I asked if I could take pictures and video. And with no hesitation, they said yes. And with no hesitation, the police department said yes to putting it on the internet.
