CA Gay Marriage: One Year Later

For California's gays and lesbians, today marks the bittersweet one year anniversary of the California Supreme Court's decision to allow LGBT folks to get married in the Sunshine State. Of course, things didn't turn out exactly as planned and in November, Proposition 8 passed, leaving gays and lesbians high and dry at the aisle. Cue the scenes of protesters marching on the Mormon Church, the streets of Silver Lake and Downtown and ultimately, last month's decision by the Supreme Court to uphold Prop. 8 while allowing the approximately 18,000 couples who were hitched to stay that way.

The California Supreme Court has continued its longstanding track record of providing inexhaustible fodder for the right wing chain e-mail we all get from our conservative relatives, today handing down a verdict that, in fact, doctors cannot deny heath care simply because an invisible Sky God says so:

Update (10:41 a.m.): The CA Supreme Court has ruled that gay and lesbian couples should have the freedom to marry. Read the entire opinion here.

In 2000, California voters passed Proposition 22, which denied the freedom to marry for gay, lesbian and transgender couples. Today, the California Supreme Court heard oral arguments challenging that law.

In a California Supreme Court ruling yesterday, a judge has made it harder for a divorced, non-custodial parent to block their ex from moving away with the kids. These are now called "move-away" parents, which sounds like something an 8-year-old might have come up with. Will "custodial" be traded for "sleep-over" next?

As anyone who’s seen Doc Hollywood knows, Los Angeles has a fairly secure footing in the medical community, or at least the cosmetical medical community. The city is also home to one of the world’s premiere research hospitals, the UCLA Medical Center, which recently benefited from a $200 million donation by David Geffen. Last year, the hospital suffered a PR blow when one of the workers in its morgue was arrested for selling body parts from corpses. It won’t be the first time UCLA was dragged into the choppy waters where law, medicine and morality converge.

Cynics of the world will not be surprised to find out that divorce became a whole lot easier thanks to a Los Angeles case. Citizens of this city of exes have a bad rap for treating marriage like, well, a bad wrap – chucking it easily into the nearest trash can. Yet, the legal decision that makes divorce doable evinces nothing but the highest respect for institution of marriage. It’s a case worth revisiting, especially before the new season of Desperate Housewives begins.

The teenager's case became a bit of a as a number of prominent writers spoke out to back him. In particular, Michael Chabon wrote a notable editorial on the subject in the New York Times in April.
