More Than Tacky Bar Drinks: 5 Cool LA Cinco de Mayo Events
Cinco de Mayo commemorates a victory by the Mexican army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is a minor holiday in Mexico, but in the United States, it has evolved into a celebration of Mexican pride and heritage. Regardless of ethnic origin, Cinco de Mayo is heartily embraced by Angelenos. Here are some of the interesting Cinco celebrations going on around town:
Top Ten Transcendent Moments At LA Rock Gigs In 2010
When the band finished their version of Love’s “Along Again Or” aided by a mariachi horn section I was pretty sure we’d seen the highlight of an already strong show. Then, front man Joey Burns called out “Here’s one for D. Boon!,” and burst into the Minutemen classic “Corona,” taking a gringo punk rock imagining of Mexican music and sending it straight back to Mexico with a straight face. It was perhaps the finest only-in-LA moment...
1, 2 Punch: Quakes Rattle Cali-Mexico Border This Morning
Two moderate earthquakes hit one after the other near the California-Mexico border this morning, rattling residents of Baja California and in San Diego and Imperial Counties.
5.8 Earthquake Strikes Near Border, Buildings 'Sway' in San Diego
It's been a shaky day. The Death Valley area had a nice 3.6 earthquake earlier this morning, but the U.S.-Mexico border takes the cake. A 5.8 earthquake struck at 10:48 a.m. on the Mexico side some 20 miles from Mexicali in Baja Mexico and Calexico in California. It's been followed by various aftershocks: a 4.9 at 10:53 a.m., a 4.0 at 11 a.m., a 3.4 at 11:04 a.m., a 3.0 at 11:12 a.m. and a 2.7 microquake at 11:17 a.m. We've seen no reports of damage or casualties yet, but "buildings briefly swayed in San Diego"--about 100 miles away--reported The Desert Sun.
Tonight In Rock: Calexico, Jamie Lidell, Dios (Malos), Death to Anders
Mondays in LA are always good for free shows. Tonight we've got Hawthorne-born, San Pedro-based Dios (Malos) at Spaceland. LA-based singer-songwriter Devon Williams and Anaheim's own power pop act Thee Makeout Party will be opening. Also, Death to Anders and Rademacher will be playing at the Echo. Tonight will conclude the month-long Monday Night Residency for both artists respectively. However, we suggest you shell out the money to catch Calexico and the Cave Singers at the Henry Fonda Theater. The latter, a Seattle-based folk-rock group, will surely compliment the Southwestern vibes of the former.
Tunnel with A/C & Elevator Found at Mexico Border
A tunnel found Tuesday by Mexican authorities in Mexicali was probably going to be used to transport drugs to Calexico, CA. The tunnel had a mini rail system, ventilation (A/C as USA Today said), lighting and an electric lift at the shaft. It came within 130 feet of the U.S. Border.
