A collaboration of Los Angeles-based media arts organizations has launched the first mobile community TV network with the help of Transit TV. Out the Window is a video art installation of 40 short films currently airing on all 2200 L.A. Metro buses covering 4000 sq miles of LA County, say organizers.

All Aboard! Metro Approves Day Pass Price Rollback to $5
As previously proposed, today the Metro Board approved a temporary decrease in the price of a Day Pass from $6 to $5. The new fare will be available starting August 1st, and is part of a 1-year test to see if cutting the cost will boost ridership on the transit system.

It's been five years since the federal consent decree alleging Metro "violated civil rights by favoring rail over buses" was lifted, and "ambitious" plans are underway to make the system more efficient, reports the LA Times.
Feds Give Metro Nearly $50 Million for Bus Maintenance
Metro will be receiving $47.75 million, thanks to the federal government's State of Good Repair program, to build a new bus operations and maintenance facility in downtown Los Angeles. To be located near Union Station, the facility, which they hope earns the environmentally Gold LEED status, will provide service for up to 200 buses and include two structures: a 16,300 square-foot bus operations and administration buildings and a 500,000 square-foot bus maintenance building. A total of $766 million allocated nationwide. Long Beach, Anaheim and Foothill Transit also were awarded.

Metro Beefs Up Train Service, Expects Bus Delays for Lakers Parade
Blue Line trains will run every 6 minutes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow to help move the hundreds of thousands of people expected at tomorrow's Lakers victory parade. Additionally, the Red and Purple Lines will carry extra train cars and Gold and Green Lines are prepared to add more trains to service if needed. "Metro Bus services will be significantly impacted in the event area, especially bus lines that either run on or cross Figueroa, Flower or Grand streets, between Olympic and Martin Luther King boulevards," the agency said in a statement. "Delays can be expected beginning about 10 a.m. and will continue until the end of the parade for all passengers riding in the Metro Bus lines: 28, 30, 31, 35, 37, 38, 40, 42, 55, 70, 71, 76, 78, 79, 81, 96, 102, 200, 204, 335, 355, 378, 439, 442, 444, 445, 446, 447, 450x, 460, 484, 485, 550, 714, 728, 730, 740, 754, 770."
Feds Give LA Millions in Transit Money
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced that $400 million from the economic recovery package is headed to make capital investments in transit throughout California. It's not going to build us the Subway to the Sea or anything sexy like that, but is headed to more functional improvements, such as seen in the above photo:
USC Football Games by Transit... Waiting for Expo Line
Metro sent out a press release today telling people how to get to USC games via public transit. By the summer or fall of 2010, the Expo Line is expected to be completed with three stops in and surrounding the USC campus (two near the Coliseum and one by the Galen Center). When that day happens, getting to a USC game will be a cinch. But until then, you've got to read dizzying Metro directions like this:
Long Beach Transit Teams up with CSULB
Santa Monica College is already going full force with their Big Blue Bus partnership that gives students and faculty free rides. Now, Long Beach Transit and California State University, Long Beach, are aiming towards a similar program, according to the Press-Telegram: "The one-month trial program, which began Monday, aims to alleviate parking problems on campus, save students gas money and get incoming freshmen in the habit of relying on the bus. CSULB students and employees can swipe their university identification cards on board Long Beach Transit buses to get unlimited free rides on any route, including those that aren't connected with the campus."
