Tonight In Rock: No Doubt, Jon Brion, Stellastarr, Busdriver

Tonight, as always, local multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be jamming with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. Anaheim-based ska-infused pop outfit No Doubt are poised to headline the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater twice with Grammy-nominated pop punk outfit Paramore and Swedish new wave rockers the Sounds in tow. And, lastly, local rapper Busdriver (LAist Review, #2) will be performing at the Echoplex with Deerhoof (LAist Review). But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch NY-based indie rockers Stellastarr. LAist favorites, Michigan's own Mason Proper and New Hampshire's own Wild Light (LAist Review) are slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: Brand New, Cage, Busdriver, Hey Champ, Men

Tonight Levittown-bred rockers Brand New will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the Troubadour with none other than Dios (LAist Interview, Review, #2) in tow. NY-based rapper Cage is poised to headline the El Rey Theatre. LAist favorites, Chicagoist-approved electro rock trio Hey Champ will be gracing Bardot before they make the big trek home. And, lastly, Brooklyn-based dance band and art/performance collective Men will be taking on Spaceland with San Franciscan electro pop act Hey Willpower. But we strongly suggest heading over to Out of Asia to catch Beach Dazed, FMLY's twelve hour celebration of Los Angeles' music and arts community. LAist favorites Busdriver (LAist Review, #2), Best Coast, RJD2, Voxtrot and Haim will be performing, among many others.

Tonight In Rock: Art Brut, White Rabbits, Chairlift, Busdriver

Tonight English/German indie rockers Art Brut will be continuing a three night stint at Spaceland with Rumspringa (LAist Review, #2) and Voxhaul Broadcast in tow. Brooklyn-based indie pop act Chairlift (LAist Review), who gained popularity through those (goddamn) lurid Apple commercials, are poised to grace the Echo with Fool's Gold front man Luke Top. And, lastly, local rapper Busdriver (LAist Review, #2) will be headlining the Knitting Factory's Main Stage in celebration of his forthcoming disc, 2009's Jhelli Beam. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch NYC-based indie rock sextet White Rabbits. LAist favorites the Subjects are slated to kick things off.

Tonight In Rock: The Dead Weather, Viva Voce, Busdriver, Slang Chickens

Tonight Nashville-based alternative rock supergroup the Dead Weather, which features Jack White of the White Stripes and Alison Mosshart of the Kills, will be headlining a sold-out show at the Roxy. Local rapper Busdriver (LAist Review, #2) is poised to flow in celebration of his forthcoming disc, 2009's Jhelli Beam, at Amoeba Records early on in the evening. And, lastly, San Franciscan psych rock sextet Sleepy Sun will be performing at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock with Dios (Malos) and Slang Chickens. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Echo to catch Portland-based indie rock duo Viva Voce (LAist Review). LAist favorites Cut Off Your Hands (LAist Review) are slated to kick things off.

Last week LAist contributing photographer Benjamin Hoste documented a wild, circus-like extravaganza. We are, of course, referring to the Of Montreal (LAist Review) show at the Glass House in Pomona. LA-based rapper Busdriver (LAist Review) kicked off the show, letting out his signature, sinuous flow with none other than local electronic mastermind Nosaj Thing on the decks. But now, without further ado, we present Hoste's strikingly singular images.

Tonight the "Queen of Soul," Aretha Franklin, will begin a two-night stint at the House of Blues Sunset. Famed folk songstress Lucinda Williams is slated to perform at the Wiltern in support of 2008's Little Honey. Local multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion will be stopping through the Largo at the Coronet with his adept crew. And Brooklyn-based, Pratt Institute-bred noise rockers Japanther are set to tear down the Smell in Downtown. But in light of last night's cancellation of Kaiju Big Battel, we strongly suggest you head over to Ground Zero at USC to catch Busdriver's sinuous flow and Daedelus' burly beats.

If you cannot make it to hear the amazing jazz vocalist, Julia Fordham, at The Roxy tonight, opening up at Hotel Cafe tonight is Tiffany Randol, who we caught at one of <strong>Alex & Sam's Tangier shows. The front woman of NYC based glam rock band, Valeze, has now gone solo singer/songwriter style, making Los Angeles her second home, and is bringing out a new sound that is more folk-acoustic-pop than anything. The LA newbie can belt out her lyrics like a pro and her body and hips swing as if the music has seduced her in some kind of trance. Later at the Hotel Cafe, one of acoustic favs plays his last night of the Hotel Cafe residency -- stay for Brian Wright and the Waco Tragedies. ~ Z.B.

This raw footage from a minor medical emergency on Thursday night shows a eastbound Red Line train stopped at the Hollywood/Western station. Supposedly an elderly woman fell and was feeling horrible. When we arrived at the station, everything seemed normal -- passengers exited and new ones came aboard. Then, the train's engines shut down. A few minutes later, the conductor on the PA system said there was a medical emergency and we would be...

A cyclist westbound on Hollywood Boulevard hears a loud horn behind him as he rides in the right side of the #2 lane, alongside a row of parked cars and dangerously close to the door zone. The motorist with the heavy horn hand turns out to be Metro Bus Driver #XXXXX and she passes the cyclist so closely that his left hand touches the side of the bus as it speeds past him. The number...

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here together in the sight of Rock and in the face of Roll, to join together you, dear LAist reader, and this New Music Tuesday in holy Matrimony. Fri 5/5 - Islands @ The El Rey ($12) – Montreal’s Islands are an eccentric indie pop band that formed out of the ashes of the Unicorns. Don’t hold that against them, they’re much better than the Unicorns. The band can still be too cutesy at times (the song “Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby” doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Whitney, Bobby or Curtis Mayfield) but the arrangements are more fleshed out and enjoyable. Underground rappers Busdriver and Subtitle make appearances on the record; maybe they’ll enhance the live show too? Listen to some tracks at Myspace (“Rough Gem” and “Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby” are a good place to start).
