Cafe Introduces Minnesotan-Inspired Cheese Stuffed Burgers

It's good to be the son of a restaurant owner. Miriam Toam's son loved the Jucy Lucy burger trend in Minneapolis so much, he convinced her to experiment and make her own for Mira'le Cafe and Grill on West 3rd Street. Customers gave a thumbs up and now five cheese stuffed burgers are on the menu, whether it be a brie with cranberries, blue cheese with carmelized onions or pepper jack with bacon and avocado. Toam says she can also do it with veggie and turkey burgers by doubling up the patties. She also offers gluten-free breaks and burger buns upon request. The morning and afternoon cafe has been around for just over a year and so far is faring well with Yelpers.

Best Gastropub in L.A.? Maybe York on York (in Highland Park)?

Certainly everyone has their favorite gastropub, maybe because it's their neighborhood hang or because they like the burger a lot, let's say from Father's Office. But let's face it, sometimes these gastropubs are out of control busy, packed and with a line out the door. That's why we love York on York (Blvd.) in Highland Park. How can you beat a chillax environment with $5 Craftsman beers and some of the best skin-on fries in the city on a weekday night? Not to mention the popular cheddar/harissa burgers (or the grilled tofu sandwich for veggies).

Can you say - "Over 100 Beers." How about - "Bacon Crusted French Toast?" High School buddies from New York, Steve Lieberman and Keith O'Brien opened West 4th/Jane at the beginning of June on 4th Street in Santa Monica as a place where pretensions are left at the door. The guys are self described "blue collar" and say that West 4th/Jane caters to everyone. I agree. Want a Duvel? Done. A nice red wine? Done. How about a Beast red can? Also, done. Almost every bit of work (except electrical) put into the place was done by the guys, their gals, and friends. To put it bluntly, it's the kind of place you wish that you owned.

Eye Nosh: Burgers at The Fix in Silver Lake

The Fix Burger in Silver Lake is enjoying their first summer in business, after opening last fall to mostly rave reviews. They've got all sorts of specialty burgers on the menu, and can serve you up a patty made of beef, buffalo, turkey, or even ostrich. Yelpers hoot about their garlic or sweet potato fries, as well as their shakes, and just how well-cooked the burgers are--no matter what the meat.

Last Sunday we urged you to Get Out and get yourself some free burgers, fries, and shakes from Ruby's Shake Shack at their Grand Opening party. Ruby's Shake Shack is indeed part of the Ruby's chain, but it's a chain with a lot of local history (the first one opened on the Balboa Pier in Newport Beach in 1982, styled like a classic 40s diner and named for the owner's mom).

8 Ounces of Burger Pleasure

The thought of an 8 oz burger sounds off-putting for some reason. Why advertise the size of the meat? Like they say, it’s what is in it that matters. Well, 8 oz Burger Bar has hit it spot on and at reasonable prices. In a homey bar-like atmosphere worlds away from the Melrose that intersects Robertson, the burgers here deserve a pilgrimage. The patty consists of a blend of four different cuts of meat that have been dry-aged in the restaurant's Himalayan salt-tiled cellar.

The Counter, known for letting customers customize their own burgers anyway they want, finally made its arrival yesterday in Studio City (Ventura Blvd. near Laurel Canyon). The long-awaited restaurant adds to the commercial district's gamut of quality eateries to choose from, including the nearby Artisan Cheese Gallery, Arb Pizza, Vegan Plate and Laurel Tavern.

Signs of Progress at New Burger Joint in Studio City

They were planning on opening last Fall (and before that, last year Winter), but new restaurants never get off that easy. The Counter, a make-your-own-burger Santa Monica favorite (among many other locations), is working to open a Studio City location on the northwest corner of Ventura and Laurel Canyon. "No more driving to Santa Monica!" blogger Daniel Barassi excitedly said in an e-mail to LAist, sharing this photo and noting that the large street sign has also been installed. With the already packed Laurel Tavern just down the street, this will make for some good burger-and-beer competition in the southeast Valley. Check out some of our "food porn" from both places: The Counter | Laurel Tavern.

Molly's Charbroiled Burger: 1929-2009???

Molly's Burger stand has been doomed to the dustbin: Eater LA discovered that the long-time Hollywood institution will be knocked down next month to make way for more office space on Vine St. It will be a sad day in February for fans of cheeseburgers, breakfast burritos, and Korean short-ribs, as well as students and tourists looking for a cheap but scenic meal.

Five Guys Burgers & Fries, the much raved about East Coast based burger chain, now has two locations in Southern California, albeit not in the direct Los Angeles area. The first one opened in Carson six months ago with the second opening last week in Cerritos. Another was set to open in La Habra, but that ran into problems.

In-N-Out would like to catch you before you turn that ten dollar bill into a roll of quarters and roll yourself over to one of their SoCal locations on their upcoming anniversary. Rumors that the popular fast food chain are offering up their classic burgers for 25 cents as part of a 60th anniversary special are false. The word from In-N-Out: "The rumor is not true." Although a burger for a quarter sounds like a great idea, considering the economy that sort of promotion might just evoke too much of "bread line" sentiment. Just look at the scene a few days ago at Phillipe's when they offered their signature sandwich for pennies on the dollar!

For a long time it seemed like Bob's Big Boy was going, going, and almost gone. But the end of an era has been halted, thanks to the new owner of the site of the old Johnie's Broiler in Downey, who is set to build a new Big Boy based on old designs.

Locally based burger chain Fatburger will be opening its first Chicago-area outpost next January, all thanks to Kanye West, who just put out a new puppet lovin' music video this week. West owns KW Foods LLC, which has the rights to develop 10 Fatburgers around Chicagoland. Earlier this year, Fatburger Founder Lovie Yancey died. [Via Chicagoist]

Have you ever wondered what a lamb burger would taste like? How about a kobe beef burger? Wonder no more. Larchmont Grill presents Gourmet Burger Night where one can all of those, plus a salmon burger. Not into meat or fish? No problem, they also offer a house-made veggie gourmet burger.

The Los Angeles area's growing stock of eco-friendly businesses increased Saturday with the grand opening of O!burger in West Hollywood. The organic burger joint uses only certified organic ingredients in their grass fed beef burgers, free range turkey burgers, hot dogs, salads, French fries and shakes.

Nancy Luna of the OC Register's fantastic food blog, Fast Food Maven (it's more than just fast food), took a field trip out of Orange County to the East Coast last year and while there, visited Five Guys Burgers to taste test the talked-about nosh that many compare to In-N-Out. However, her findings led her to say that they are actually more comparable to The Counter.

In Pasadena, Orean claims to be the first vegetarian fast-food drive-thru (fast it is not). And beginning Saturday, a new restaurant in West Hollywood will be taking claim to being Los Angeles’ first fast food burger house using only certified organic ingredients. O!burger will offer grass fed beef, free range turkey, hot dogs, salads, French fries and shakes. And yes, they have veggie burgers made from their own recipe based on spinach and corn.

There's two bits of good news and one part bad. First, the good: The Counter, of Santa Monica make-your-own-burger fame, is opening a location in Studio City at Laurel Canyon and Ventura Blvd. It was supposed to open this past Winter, but due to stringent health code standards and rumored pressure from future competitors making it harder for them to start business, the opening of the Valley location has been pushed back to this Autumn.

It seems that Los Angeles either loves or hates Father's Office. Among the reasons why to dislike Sang Yoon's operation: you cannot choose or replace food items. What you get is what you get. No ketchup! If you don't like that, then the recommendation is to not go there. Yoon will not lose sleep.

Molly's Charbroiled Burger, a rickety burger shack on Vine between Selma and Hollywood, is one of those funny little places that is both totally ordinary and totally L.A. -- run by Koreans, with a Mexican line cook, who serve up good old American burgers, fries, hot dogs, burritos, and, um, bulgogi plates. Students at the neighboring film and recording schools swear by the breakfast burritos -- cozy bundles of egg, french-fry hash browns, bacon,...

I am thankful for… Thanksgiving - even though I think it’s a stupid holiday, and I pretty much hate all the food associated with it - for giving me the opportunity to spend the day with family that I love and actually enjoy being around. I am thankful every day that I am able to make a living being creative and doing something I love. (Except for when I’m on strike) I am thankful...

Astro Family Restaurant is a venerable Los Angeles institution located a hop, skip, and a jump from the beautiful shores of Silver Lake. Astro has graced the glamorous corner Glendale Blvd. and Fletcher Dr. since 1974. Silver Lake has been through many changes over the last thirty years. It went from a neighborhood known for being dingy and overrun with gangs to a neighborhood that is trendy and is overrun with hipsters. Through all of the trials and tribulations, Astro has been there with its hearty menu.

Three years ago I moved to LA after spending six years in Boston, a city where the 24 hour convenience store is practically your only option for late night eats. My first weekend here, I took advantage of the fact that I could sit down and be served real food after 2 A.M.. Where did I go to enjoy my first late night meal in LA? None other than the LA late night institution...

While most Angelenos will urge their visitors to try a meal at In N' Out (the best to capture that classic sunshiney L.A. drive-through burger experience), they often forget about the other local fast-food burger phenomenon: Fatburger. Both establishments boast excellent burgers and a fool-proof menu, but there are some major (and delicious) differences that make it almost impossible to decide which is better (kind of like the Pink's versus Skooby's debate -- but...

Another sunny Southern California weekend is upon us, which means all over this fair city and its outermost reaches people are planning on gathering around the great American grill to marry meat and flame. Sure enough, a caravan of your closest friends and cohorts appear on your doorstep with cases of beer and plastic wrapped bundles of weiners and buns in the spirit of the BBQ. Sometimes things get a little imaginative, and some...

How much do you love burgers? Maybe you know all the secret menu items available at In-n-Out, or maybe you're a regular fixture at Father's Office. Who's got the best burger and just what elements make a burger the best is an oft-debated topic here on LAist and elsewhere. Are the determining factors the toppings? Kind of meat? Affordability? History? Size? The variables are multifold, I know. I like burgers. I'm no crazy burger...

Not so much. - EaterLA has worked itself into a frenzy over two new celeb chef restaurants: here's their first peeks into Craft LA and Osteria Mozza. You know David Beckham arrived today at LAX, but this is one of the many things that happened behind the scenes. And an interesting one at that. The motive behind this video is American Beef, so welcome to America you Brit! A&W Restaurants recently launched its Moove to American campaign to support 100% U.S. beef. Thirty all American cows traveled by barge to the icon of America -- the Statue of Liberty -- to...

Like most people, I have gone through my vegetarian phases, my vegan phases and the worst of all - my low-carb phase. So my cooking is pretty versatile. I have a lot of vegan friends who love barbecues, and it only takes a few minor changes to make them more comfortable. Even if you are super-carnivorous, you can still host a barbecue that will make your vegan friends happy. First of all, you want...

Throw-The-Kitchen-Sink-In-It Pizza: with Vodka Sauce, Tomatoes, Mushrooms, Garlic, Mozzarella, Pepperoni, Basil, Parmesan, Caramelized Onions, and Olives We've gotta admit, Mozza was great, but Lord knows we can't eat like red-headed Italian kings every day. In fact, even ordering pizza every night tends to add up: $20 per pizza per day for two people over one week? That's over $140, even if you eat the leftovers for breakfast! It's enough to make us want to...I...
