In-N-Out Copycat Pops Up Overseas
The ad copy at this unnamed burger joint coming soon to Shanghai seems awfully familiar.
"Double-Double"? "Animal-Style"? "Protein Style"? A reader on Reddit think it's some kind of sick joke. We call it globalization.
Burger Rumors: Five Guys Looking to Cruise to the Miracle Mile This Fall?
In-N-Out loyalists, your chance to defect to the dark side of East Coast import Five Guys is getting upped, with rumors that they are "coming soon" to a Miracle Mile address.
In-N-Out to Maryland Copycat: Nice Try, We're Suing
Whenever a fast food joint anywhere in the U.S. tries to mimic the wildly successful look or menu of SoCal's In-N-Out Burger, In-N-Out doesn't sit pretty--they sue. And so it goes with Grab-N-Go Burger of Aberdeen, Maryland, whose red and yellow logo has In-N-Out execs a little uncomfy with its proximity to their own.
A Mouthful: 4 of L.A.'s Top Comics Talk Comedy Over Burgers
It's a pretty simple formula: comics who aren't exactly starving these days + gourmet burgers = great food and better conversation. Recently, LAist sat down with Paul Scheer, Dave Holmes, Steve Agee and TJ Miller to discuss everything from the current state of comedy on television, life in L.A., and those shows that almost made them quit. The burgers - an LAist favorite from Susan Feniger's Street - weren't bad, either.
Burgers n' Beer: Umami to Open at Anaheim Brewery
Two-year-old L.A. burger phenomenon Umami Burger is OC bound. The sixth location of the gourmet burger bar is scheduled to open December 1 in the Anaheim Brewery complex, reports the OC Register.
Burger Lovers, Rejoice: Silverton & Pressman's Short Order Breaks Ground at Farmers' Market
Los Angeles suffers from a pretty chronic case of Burgermania, and the hype gets fueled by news of an impending new contender for the city's favorite beefy bite between two buns. One of the most highly-anticipated burgerventures is the dream team of Nancy Silverton and Amy Pressman, and their Short Order burger restaurant, which is getting closer to reality in its spot in the historic Original Farmers' Market.
Pig Out Next Week on Special Burgers at Oinkster
Squid Ink got our attention this morning with news of a week-long burger celebration at The Oinkster, one of our favorite Eagle Rock eating spots.
8 Oz Burger Bar Not Renovating, Is Closed for Good
Govind Armstrong's 8 Oz Burger Bar was usually pretty packed, served up a pretty good burger (and a killer Shortrib Grilled Cheese) along with very slurp-able boozy shakes and a curious (if not completely palatable) Bacon Bloody Mary. After an abrupt March shuttering for a purported "renovation," Eater LA updates diners that 8 Oz is actually closed for good. Or, in their words: "Very Much DONE DONE DONE."
Five Guys Taking Over for Fatburger, Too?
The stage has already been set for an East Coast/West Coast battle of the burgers between upstart Five Guys and SoCal classic In-n-Out. But when we brought up the brewing rivalry, a third player, and the second to rep the local scene, was thrown in the mix: Fatburger. Well, score one more for Five Guys in that throwdown, as the OC Register's Fast Food Maven confirms that the Virigina-based franchise will be taking over the Fatburger spot at Newport's Fashion Island.
Spiked Milkshakes & Tasty Burgers Await You at Go Burger
In the mood for a burger and a spiked milkshake in the heart of Hollywood? Go to Go Burger. The folks at New York-based BLT have had such success with their food truck (called Go Burger) that they’ve opened brick-and-mortar restaurants. It’s happening more and more; the food truck craze is resulting in restaurants (like The Alibi which was born from the Kogi truck) being built due to the popularity of the trucks. By the way, if you ever find yourself at BLT you have to order the Braised Short Ribs. You’ll cry tears of joy. You’re welcome.
Move Over BBQ: In-N-Out Expands To Texas
At least eight In-N-Out restaurants are planning to open in Texas with the first locations set to open in as soon as two months, reports the OC Register. When In-N-Out announced it was conquering Utah three years ago, the regional chain reportedly said it had no additional plans for US domination. Does this mean we can expect an In-N-Out in Philadelphia?? For now, the answer is no. However, the Lone Star state is about to get less lonely.
Umami Burger Expands to Studio City
The Daily News reports that the popular burger restaurant has opened its first location in the Valley, on Ventura Blvd. in Studio City:
The red, white and black decor is reminiscent of a '60s to '70s glamorous Hollywood with white marble counters, black booths, red seats with gold studs (at the bar and tables) and fancy chandeliers.
Why is This In-N-Out So Expensive?
Thanks to this post from Midtown Lunch, we were notified of a restaurant in Manhattan called Fresh N Fast, a New York burger joint that touts itself as "a FRESH NEW FACE in the fast food industry. Fresh, all natural beef patties. Fresh hand cut fries, made daily. The only thing frozen is the real ice cream in our shakes!"
Map: The Best Burgers in L.A.
How has your National Hamburger Month celebration been going? You could check out some bunned offerings from newer kids on the burger block like The Slaw Dogs or the Patty Wagon. Or maybe just stick to the old reliable, like In-N-Out, or one of our favorites (25 Degrees, Golden State, or one of the 10 spots we declared the Best in L.A.).
Eat Up! May is National Hamburger Month
Apparently this month is National Hamburger Month. Luckily, Los Angeles and its surrounding area is no stranger to good burgers--meaty, veggie or anything between. Recently on LAist, we've declared the best burgers in L.A. and have been exploring the offerings in Pasadena, among much more coverage. And thanks to our lovely contributors in the LAist Featured Photos pool on Flickr, we bring you some excellent food porn above. If you've got a must eat-at burger place, let it be known in the comments!
Midnight Movie: Someone Eats More In-N-Out Than You
In-N-Out is known for the unknown. Their secret menu is an oral SoCal legend. Back in 2007, a college student in Bakersfield decided to order... what else? A 30x30 burger. Yes, that's 30 pieces of cow, 30 slices of cheese, lettuce, grilled onions and two buns. There's no telling what this guy might do with KFC's new Double Down.
Pasadena Burgers: Slaw Dogs
That's right, Slaw Dogs. Not Slaw burgers. True, they are a newcomer to the Pasadena scene, and yes, they specifically focus on hot dogs, but this little spot serves up some of the fattest, juiciest, and most creative burgers in town. In fact, owner Ray Byrne was originally considering opening a burger joint before he opted for dogs.
Eye Nosh: The Patty Wagon Rolls Out the Burgers
Last week another food truck hit the streets of Los Angeles, and LAist Featured Photos pool contributor nomsnotbombs had a taste. Touting burgers with a conscience, The Patty Wagon is poised to give other burger trucks--maybe burgers in general?--a run for their money, particularly with their focus on locally-sourced ingredients and patties made with grass-fed beef. Noms Not Bombs the blogger explains the concept:
If you're not the Food Inc.-watching, The Omnivore's Dilemma-reading type, feeding cows grass (rather than corn, grain or other animals) is better for them, you and the environment. In short, if every truck needs a "gimmick," Patty Wagon's is sustainability and great taste. The "great taste" part was found in the two slider-sized mini-burgers (yup, they're keeping 'em mini) she tried, the "Keep Your Sunny Side Up ($3.00, L- slider served on ciabatta bread with gremolata) and I Get a Kick Out of You ($3.25, R- roasted jalapenos, pancetta and provolone cheese)." Ready to drool, carnivores? Check this response: "My favorite bites of the slider were where the oil from the gremolata and the meat had soaked through to the ciabatta." The Patty Wagon also has homemade dill pickles, and desserts. Keep your eye out for them! [Twitter]
Tacos & Burgers: More Eateries Prepping to Open on West 3rd Street
With Toast, Milk, Breadbar Joan's, A.O.C., Ortolan, The Little Door (plus The Little Door Next Door) and more, West Third Street has always been a nice restaurant row. Now two eateries a poised to open, adding tacos and burgers to the mix, notes Tasha Nita Adams at Mondette, a lifestyle blog about the area.
Recession Obsession: Capitol Burgers
In this town, burgers are like agents: everybody’s got one. Wait, that’s not quite right. But at least you get the idea: there’s no shortage of burger opinions, as we’ve already seen plenty of on this site. But one thing we should all be able to get behind is simple, delicious, cheap food.
What Wines Go Best With a Double Double? You Can Learn!
Those of use with less refined palates (snort!) tend to pair an In-N-Out burger with, like, a Strawberry Milkshake or an ice-cold Root Beer. But if you want that Double Double with a nice glass of vino and just aren't sure which one to choose, LearnAboutWine has the solution.
New Burger Eatery Coming to West 3rd, Gastropub to Fairfax
For those who love a good burger, more new places are revving up for an opening. Tasha Nita Adams at Blackburn and Sweetzer finds that Surya India on West 3rd Street is set to become The Burger Factory, according to a public notice posted in the restaurant window. Also, word on the street is that a gastropub will be taking over the old Largo space on Fairfax, a few storefronts down from Golden State.
New Food Truck to Roll Out with Heavy Metal Tendencies
Come December 15th, a new burger truck is expected to hit L.A.'s streets. Grill Em' All pays homage to Metallica and other rock n' roll bands through their rotating menu.
For example, the Molly Hatchet, described by Grub Street Los Angeles as "seared fennel sausage gravy, bacon, and maple syrup" or the...
Cafe Introduces Minnesotan-Inspired Cheese Stuffed Burgers
It's good to be the son of a restaurant owner. Miriam Toam's son loved the Jucy Lucy burger trend in Minneapolis so much, he convinced her to experiment and make her own for Mira'le Cafe and Grill on West 3rd Street. Customers gave a thumbs up and now five cheese stuffed burgers are on the menu, whether it be a brie with cranberries, blue cheese with carmelized onions or pepper jack with bacon and avocado. Toam says she can also do it with veggie and turkey burgers by doubling up the patties. She also offers gluten-free breaks and burger buns upon request. The morning and afternoon cafe has been around for just over a year and so far is faring well with Yelpers.
Best Gastropub in L.A.? Maybe York on York (in Highland Park)?
Certainly everyone has their favorite gastropub, maybe because it's their neighborhood hang or because they like the burger a lot, let's say from Father's Office. But let's face it, sometimes these gastropubs are out of control busy, packed and with a line out the door. That's why we love York on York (Blvd.) in Highland Park. How can you beat a chillax environment with $5 Craftsman beers and some of the best skin-on fries in the city on a weekday night? Not to mention the popular cheddar/harissa burgers (or the grilled tofu sandwich for veggies).
West 4th/Jane - Santa Monica's Newest Beer/Burger Joint
Can you say - "Over 100 Beers." How about - "Bacon Crusted French Toast?" High School buddies from New York, Steve Lieberman and Keith O'Brien opened West 4th/Jane at the beginning of June on 4th Street in Santa Monica as a place where pretensions are left at the door. The guys are self described "blue collar" and say that West 4th/Jane caters to everyone. I agree. Want a Duvel? Done. A nice red wine? Done. How about a Beast red can? Also, done. Almost every bit of work (except electrical) put into the place was done by the guys, their gals, and friends. To put it bluntly, it's the kind of place you wish that you owned.
