Traffic at a local airport that's both easier to navigate and significantly less expensive than LAX is nevertheless going down, reports the La Canada Valley Sun. The number of passengers flying out of Bob Hope Airport went down by 5.1% in June, the fourth consecutive month in which passenger traffic has seen a decrease.

CheapFlights.com recently released a ranking of 101 U.S. airports based on affordability, and the top two are in Los Angeles County. Long Beach (LGB) and Bob Hope Airport (BUR) ranked first and second, respectively, on their list. A third SoCal airport, John Wayne in Orange County (SNA) came in fifth.

If you live within earshot of the flight paths for Burbank's Bob Hope Airport or the Van Nuys Airport, you aren't going to find any sound relief in this news. The House of Representatives has rejected a proposed legislative amendment that would have imposed nighttime curfews on flights in and out of those two airports, according to the Daily News.
In Like a Lion: Spring Arrives in SoCal With a Fierce Storm
The rain fell steadily and heavily yesterday over the Greater Los Angeles area for hours--12-14 hours in most areas--and this morning, though the rain has stopped, the cleanup continues. A number of roads remain closed, including Angeles Forest Highway, portions of Topanga Canyon Road, Pacific Coast Highway at Point Mugu, and the I-5 through the Grapevine, according to LA Now. (As always, keep up with road closures and delays via the LA Co. DPW's site.)
Safety Concerns Take Off At Burbank Airport
"A draft report from the Federal Aviation Administration has bared the long-standing safety issue of Bob Hope Airport's passenger terminal and its proximity to the runway," reports the Glendale News Press. In 1986, the FAA prohibited planes from taking off to the east because of a belief that the terminal was too close to the runway.
Toilet Drama at Burbank Airport
Boing Boing founder Mark Frauenfelder is trying to get out of town this warm Friday afternoon, but so far, it's not working. Here's why, via his Twitter: "An idiot flushed a diaper down the toilet on the plane and now 200 of us are stuck at Burbank for 4 hours. #thediaperflushershavewon." Oy vey. At least, for a small sized airport like Burbank, it's a decent place to be stuck.
Transit Center for Burbank Airport Moves Forward
The valley's beloved commuter airport will likely get a new $120-million transit center. The Burbank City Council on Tuesday approved a number of issues surrounding the center planned for Burbank Airport, pushing the project forward, according to the Burbank Leader. Southwest Airlines Jet Avoids Crash in Burbank [Updated]
This was not a good weekend for Southwest Airlines. Beyond the Kevin Smith incident, in which the director was ousted from an Oakland to Burbank flight for apparently not fitting in his seat Saturday evening, a plane of theirs avoided a crash the same day, according to a KNX1070 e-mail alert: "KNX 1070 has learned that Southwest flight 2534 with 85 people on board this Saturday was on a collision course with another plane because, according to the FAA, the Southwest jet was in the wrong place. The 737 took emergency actions resulting in two flight attendants being injured one with a broken shoulder." Add: The LA Times says the Burbank-bound Southwest jet was on a collision course with a small private plane and executed an evasive maneuver.

Burbank's Bob Hope Airport Status Still Unclear
Hearing that Burbank's Bob Hope Airport might be grounding flights this morning, I headed over there at 5:30am. They were still allowing in the usual traffic, in spite of the fact that everyone was swerving all over the road in the dense fog. I almost got T-boned by a Flyaway shuttle. I spoke to a few passengers who were heading back to the parking structure after being told their flight to San Francisco was cancelled.

Why Bob Hope Rules
No two words can better describe a decadent weekend for the Angeleno than Las Vegas. This LAist poster joined the masses at the Bob Hope (a/k/a Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena) Airport on Friday afternoon for a Southwest Airlines 3 PM cattle call to the city of Lost Wages. And we didn’t mind a bit. OK, maybe a little -- but we still love us the Bob Hope…
Hope to Kennedy No Longer Just Pie in the Sky
Of course, how this all came about is worth examining. Since the Burbank Airport always seems to have its toes treading in the community hot water with concerns over expansion and noise, JetBlue was only able to get in the gates thanks to Aloha Airlines' bankruptcy filing, and their April move-out of Terminal A, which leaves room for the the new Blue kid and their NY-bound fights. Also, since JetBlue seems to dislike LAX as much as we do--they don't fly out of there, after all--this won't undercut their own business from the Southland to NYC and other destinations. JetBlue's three non-stop daily BUR to JFK flights begin in May, with a fourth departure time slated for July.
