Thornton Scores Hat Trick, Donovan Adds to Galaxy Tally

Chivas USA 'keeper Zach Thornton is going to need to make more room on his mantel. On Monday, the veteran 'keeper was named to the 2009 MLS Best XI roster following a stellar campaign in which he registered a personal best Goals Against Average (GAA) of 0.87. His league best GAA was well complemented by the 12 shutouts he amassed throughout the season -- also tops in MLS. Thornton first earned the award in 1998 when he helped the Chicago Fire win the MLS Cup.

Galaxy Going for First

Four months ago, had one dared to state that the Galaxy would today be within striking distance of first place of the overall standings, one would have received more than a fair share of odd looks. The same type one would get if one were to claim that hiring Ruud Gullit as Head Coach was the best move the Galaxy have made in the last 5 years.

Galaxy, Chivas USA Looking for Wins

Summer is almost upon us and that means two things: warm weather and the race to the MLS playoffs is about to start. Entering the 12th week of the 2009 campaign, a couple of interesting and familiar trends are starting to surface.

For a third year in a row, Galaxy fans are left to ponder what could have been while they watch other MLS teams fight it out for a ticket to MLS Cup at the Home Depot Center on November 23rd.

Gillette Stadium in Foxboro has not been kind to the Galaxy over the years. Last night's visit couldn't have come at a worse time given the slump in which the team has found itself for the last couple of months. However, last night's performance against New England Revolution seemed to be lacking many of the problems from past visits.

It has been an eventful August for the Galaxy.

Only a few days after the turmoil of losing their head coach and their club President/General Manager, the Galaxy took the field on Thursday night for this year's final installment of the Honda SuperClasico against Chivas USA.
