Photo of the now destroyed Mann National courtesy of Los Angeles Times photographic archive, UCLA Library. Copyright Regents of the University of California, UCLA Library. Is Westwood making a comeback? The LA Times thinks so, in today's article on the burgeoning real estate development in UCLA's backyard. But isn't this a story we've heard a million times before? It goes something like this: Westwood used to be a great pedestrian area, then it fell......

Yesterday at four different locations around the Los Angeles area, teams built ice structures, a re-creation of performance and installation artist Allan Kaprow's "Fluids." Yesterday, Kaprow's son helped build one of the structures in Pasadena's Memorial Park. LAist Featured Photos contributor Tom Andrews was there to catch it. From Beverly Hills to San Pedro, "Fluids" structures are still being put up today and tomorrow. Below the photo gallery is a map of locations and dates.......

Fluids in Trousdale Estates, Beverly Hills - 1967 © Dennis Hopper [Yes, the actor] Since late March, performance art happenings have taken place all around Los Angeles. From students at USC dragging cement blocks in public right-of-ways to women licking jam off cars, the Allan Kaprow exhibit has extended beyond the gallery walls of the MOCA Geffen Contemporary gallery exhibit. Through the end of June, recreations from the pioneer of performance art will continue.......

GueriLA, the LA sister offshoot of Improv Everywhere, has done it again and they're growing. A couple weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon, they hit the Getty Museum and did a simple exercise of follow the leader... with 200+ people. They released only raw footage, but here are the highlights if you want to skim around: 1:40 - 2:20 (An outdoor staircase) 4:10 - 4:50 (On a walkway) 5:55 - 6:20 (Staircase inside the......

As we lamented in February, Beyond Baroque was in danger of losing its lease and Venice was in danger of losing one of the most unique places for poets to gather and perform their work. Mere hours before their lease was to expire, L.A. City Council voted to extend the lease for 25 more years - at only $1 a year! What could be more exciting than Beyond Baroque getting a stay of execution? The......

My first memory of Dutton's is of the one in the valley, hot on those unairconditioned summer afternoons, the faintly sour smell of the paper. It was crowded, a little uncomfortable, and yet it was a place that was full of treasures. A place where a kid could wander -- completely by accident, into the Literature section and discover something magical. After my family moved to the Westside in the early nineties, Dutton's became a......

New York Bagel Co.'s name is appropriate, but also a little misleading. New York? More like California with plenty of fresh, healthy fare (they'll substitute egg whites for no extra charge) and the occasional celebrity sighting (we spotted Lindsay Lohan early one morning, presumably still up from the night before). Bagel? Sure, they've got 15 varieties of hole-in-the-center goodness (plus a popular flat version), but it's possible to eat a dozen breakfasts without touching a......

Sad, sad news in bookish LA: Dutton's Brentwood is closing its doors. After a long battle with developers and uncertainty, which we covered last year, Doug Dutton has made the difficult decision to close. He points out, though, that Charles T. Munger, the developer that has purchased the property, has "has committed to a significant amount of financial support for the difficult process of closing the store, and we appreciate his generosity." We are saddened......

Conan O'Brien will soon leave NYC | Photo by Shiny Things via Flickr Conan O'Brien really isn't that funny as a talk show host. Nor is Jay Leno. We all know David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel are the kings of late-night (and to be fair, Craig Kilborn Ferguson has many great moments too). Nevertheless, in preparation of kicking Leno out in 2009, Conan has purchased a $10.5 million home in Brentwood:The newly built, gated......

Following a flap from an LA Times article that found 60,000 LAUSD students attend school within 500 feet of a freeway, the school district is looking into ways it can reduce the health hazards for kids close to pollution-filled freeways. Maybe the school district can use the $53 million in funds they're trying to recoup to build domes over playgrounds. Thousands of birds and an immeasurable amount of fish have died as a result......

The LA Times has definitely had its fair share of scandals in the near past with firings and hirings. Yet recently, content wise, the watchdog coverage of scandalicious politicians has been riveting. There is Mayor V and then there was the daily pounding of Rocky Delgadillo. The newest politician in the ring is 74-year-old 2nd district county supervisor Yvonne Burke who represents Watts, Culver City, Compton, South LA, Hollywood, Marina Del Rey, Inglewood to......

Since Thursday, LAist has been covering the wild adventures of a young woman named Sarah from Brentwood who has been having the strangest Super Bowl adventures. As a transplanted Bears fan, originally from Mr. T's home of Lake Forest, IL, Sarah got caught up in the Super Bowl hype and threw herself on eBay in hopes of finding a generous benefactor to pay her money and give her a ticket. She claimed to have......

On Thursday we told you about a Brentwood woman who was auctioning herself off on eBay to get a ticket to the Super Bowl. Apparently, due to the overwhelming attention of her auction she was given four tickets to the game by Axe deodorant or spray or whatever. And they're going to pay her to hold a nationwide contest for the fourth ticket, meaning now she can pick someone that she can take to......

Brentwood: You would think that street barricades and cones blocking an intersection mean that it is closed. Rather, many people just see this as an obstacle. If there happens to be a tight space to fit through, surely, the city must have done so for cars to pass through. Sherman Oaks: Probably not a good idea to dangerously and rudely cut someone off in a parking lot full of LAPD officers. Even a worse......
