Questions Still Loom in Death of 25-Year-Old Killed in Crash with LAPD Cruiser

Last week Thursday, Devin Petelski was driving in Venice when her car and an LAPD vehicle collided. She and the two officers were sent to the hospital where she died two days later. The officer driving the car suffered a fractured hand and lacerations to his elbow while the other officer was treated for abrasions and general pain.

Once upon a time, 11648 San Vicente Blvd in Brentwood was a Hamburger Hamlet. Yawn, right? Yes, the Hamlet had its heyday here in Los Angeles, but it's been a long time since the chain served anything to write (home) about. But if the three most important considerations in real estate are location, location, and yup, you guessed it, location, well, Tavern wound up with a prime piece of it. What you might not ever guess--if you didn't know it--is that this beautiful eatery, with its skylight-lit atrium dining room, plush seating, warm gray tones matched with airy cream colors, and wooden floors was once a Hamlet.

Lunch Meeting: NomNomTruck at Compartes Chocolatier Tomorrow

Okay, so at lunchtime one of the city's ever-growing fleet of mobile eateries may park outside your workplace, but for many of us we don't emerge from studio lot bungalows or Wilshire Blvd. high-rises midday--we have to go to where the lunch is. And while some of the trucks offer up sweet treats, they aren't always parked behind the main course. Tomorrow from Noon to 2, however, you can get your NomNom on right where some of the city's best chocolates come from.

Harassing Brentwood

An anonymous Craigslist rant takes on the hateful nature of Los Angeles--especially the tony Brentwood--and asks that all the haters leave: "If you wanna stay be fucking nice," she exclaims. In fact, she's so fed up, she's going out of her way to get revenge. It's amusing. "Everyone in this city mistreats eachother, its disgusting. It doesnt matter what color they are, they are dicks. In fact, I make a point now of going into places like Brentwood, where the people are the fucking rudest, most self-important assholes ever, and I like to stroll through the market aisles, take my time parking, fiddle in my purse for my wallet...its fucking juvenile, but I definitely take my sweet ass time crossing the street when its my right of way. These people need to be shamed." What do you think? Is Los Angeles a mean town or just as mean as any city?

Free Food Alert: Ice Cream at the Brentwood Country Mart

The popular rotisserie chicken and french fries joint Reddi Chick at the Brentwood Country Mart will be serving free ice cream today from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. The eatery is not exactly an ice cream shop--they serve the basic soft serve chocolate and vanilla in a cup or cone--but if you're in the area, free helps in this economy, right?

Compartes Adds Coffee Service to their Chocolate-y Goodness

Brentwood chocolate boutique Compartes sells some amazing cocoa confections, and now they're adding coffee to the works. They tell us that they will "will serve coffee daily along with our handcrafted aritsan chocolates (specials for summer include passionfruit, wild strawberry, lychee and more), handmade sorbets and gelatos and a brand new thick european-stlye hot chocolate drink with a kick (that is served in shot glasses)."

We may have spent the evening watching fireworks go off all along the horizon, in the streets, on the hills, and from major venues in Los Angeles, and we may have fallen asleep to the not-so-dulcet sounds of neighbors snap-crackle-popping their own stash of illegal fireworks into the wee hours, but we also woke up to a few great photos posted online from last night's many fireworks displays.

Meet Doakes, Super Duper Kitty Kat; He was Injured in Sunday's Brentwood Fire

On Sunday evening, Jessica Amen and Kyle Kushner lost just about everything when their two-story unit apartment in Brentwood went aflame. One resident and one firefighter sustained injuries, but nothing life threatening.

For over seven hours, firefighters fought the 100-acre Sepulveda Pass Fire along the 405 Freeway. It started before 1:00 a.m. and resources were quickly, smartly and aggressively deployed to knockdown the fire after 8:00 a.m. as Los Angeles started its Thursday workday. Here's a little of what it look like early this morning:

A sigh of relief for Los Angeles. "It took the combined efforts of more than 400 FF's just 7 hrs and 25 min to extinguish all visible flame," LA Fire Department Spokesperson Brian Humphrey announced at 8:23 a.m. The fire burned around 100 acres and there were no injuries and no structures damaged. Now the investigation for the cause is underway. Shortly before 5:00 a.m., officials were unsure what way the fire would go. Cautiously Humphrey said in an LAFD Alert that " the possibility of winds at dawn make this very much a wildfire."

*For an update, click here.* A brush fire, first reported at 12:51 a.m., ignited in the Sepulveda Pass near the Getty Museum. "It's a well protected facility," LA Fire Department Spokesperson Brian Humphrey said of the famous museum in the Brentwood neighborhood. With winds increasing shortly before 2:00 a.m., the fire was moving towards Mount St. Mary's College and homes on North Bundy Drive (map). Over 200 firefighters have been assigned from the city and various agencies to fight the fire. As of 2:15 a.m., no formal evacuations were called, but "those in the immediate area who can see flames should calmly prepare to leave well in advance of the flames," Humphrey suggested. UPDATE: As of 2:30 a.m., acreage consumed by the fire was estimated at 45 acres as winds began to diminish and an additional 100 firefighters, air resources in tow, arrived on scene.

"He failed to show up for that meeting and has uncharacteristically failed to contact his family or business associates."

Note: Robert Francis plays tonight at The Troubadour.

You don't hear Robert Francis' name mentioned around Los Angeles that often, but when you meet a fan of his, they are not just a cheerleading friend of his, they're a true die-hard fan of his musicianship, his words and the hauntingly beautiful art he creates.

Regarding the incident reported this morning where a one Dr. Christopher Thompson*, a 58-year-old emergency room physician and resident of the Mandeville Canyon neighborhood, was involved in an alleged road rage incident between two bicyclists, Christian Stoehr and Ron Peterson, on Mandeville Canyon Rd. in Brentwood, there have been some updates.

Is Westwood making a comeback? The LA Times thinks so, in today's article on the burgeoning real estate development in UCLA's backyard. But isn't this a story we've heard a million times before? It goes something like this: Westwood used to be a great pedestrian area, then it fell victim to gang violence in the late 80's, and it's never been the same since. But maybe there's hope yet -- at least, that's what developers are hoping.

On Glendon Avenue, a block east of Westwood Boulevard, the first of an anticipated 700 tenants have moved into the 350-unit Palazzo Westwood Village even as workers scurry to complete the project. Nearby on Lindbrook Drive, the former site of a Flax art supply store, developer Kambiz Hekmat has broken ground on an "extended stay" boutique hotel that will have shops and restaurants. A modernist retail project from developer Ron Simms is planned at the site of the recently razed 1,100-seat Mann National Theater, where "The Exorcist" had its Los Angeles opening in 1973.
Westwood is and always has been a cultural mecca: with UCLA's countless programs and facilities, dining options ranging from budget to big bucks, and some of the best single-theater movie houses still remaining in the country, there's more than enough to draw a crowd. And as anybody who's had the misfortune of venturing out to California Pizza Kitchen on a Friday night knows, the place is absolutely crawling with Brentwood teenagers on weekends, ready to spend their allowances on Diddy Riese and arcade games. But then the complaints come rolling in: parking is terrible, the bar situation even worse, and other than a few major chains, the shopping situation doesn't offer much.

Yesterday at four different locations around the Los Angeles area, teams built ice structures, a re-creation of performance and installation artist Allan Kaprow's "Fluids." Yesterday, Kaprow's son helped build one of the structures in Pasadena's Memorial Park. LAist Featured Photos contributor Tom Andrews was there to catch it.

Since late March, performance art happenings have taken place all around Los Angeles. From students at USC dragging cement blocks in public right-of-ways to women licking jam off cars, the Allan Kaprow exhibit has extended beyond the gallery walls of the MOCA Geffen Contemporary gallery exhibit. Through the end of June, recreations from the pioneer of performance art will continue. And one of the larger scale pieces begins this weekend.

GueriLA, the LA sister offshoot of Improv Everywhere, has done it again and they're growing. A couple weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon, they hit the Getty Museum and did a simple exercise of follow the leader... with 200+ people.

As we lamented in February, Beyond Baroque was in danger of losing its lease and Venice was in danger of losing one of the most unique places for poets to gather and perform their work. Mere hours before their lease was to expire, L.A. City Council voted to extend the lease for 25 more years - at only $1 a year!

My first memory of Dutton's is of the one in the valley, hot on those unairconditioned summer afternoons, the faintly sour smell of the paper. It was crowded, a little uncomfortable, and yet it was a place that was full of treasures. A place where a kid could wander -- completely by accident, into the Literature section and discover something magical.

New York Bagel Co.'s name is appropriate, but also a little misleading.
