Weeks ago, we warned that Forrest Ackerman, coiner of the phrase sci-fi, adventurer and keeper of the science-fiction flame, was ailing.

Forrest "Forrey" Ackerman, the nearly 92 year old coiner of the term "sci-fi" and honorary lesbian (for his work as "Laurajean Ermayne") is said to be ailing. "He wasn't sounding very strong," Harry Knowles said in an entry on Ain't It Cool News, "It hurt to hear his voice." Ackerman helped to bolster the burgeoning sci-fi community by publishing the inspirational journal, Famous Monsters of Filmland.
Talk shows this week are all Natalie Portman all the time if you hadn't noticed - the charming pixie is making the rounds for her new flick The Other Boleyn Girl, a period piece that looks like a yawn to me. In terms of tonight's viewing options check out the 10 o'clock slot - way too many choices and all of them are reality TV, what a shame.
Love it or hate it, tonight's New Year's Eve. And while half of the city has vacated for NYE's in Vegas, there's plenty to do right here in LA to welcome '08.
I'm hoping that no one had time for TV last night and if they did they had the class to watch the Boris Karloff marathon on TCM. 8:00pm Ugly Betty ABC - The Halloween Episode. TV Junkie 8:00pm Pick. 9:00pm To Die In Jerusalem HBO - Have heard enough about this documentary on NPR and elsewhere to know it's a good thing. TV Junkie Pick-O-The-Night 9:00pm The Office NBC - If you don't feel like...
I love this movie! How can you resist Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller? At a young age, Francesca became my ideal of beauty and I have spent my entire life trying to look exactly like her. This scene features Francesca (Gale Garnett) teaching me my first lessons in vamping.
Here are some Halloween songs that will make your skin crawl!
It's October and you want to do something spooky and cool but, cheap, and not too scary? Or maybe you're a crazy sci-fi horror fan? Well, you know, all the cool kids go to Ackermansion, where owner, waxwork and proprietor, Forrest Ackerman -- coiner of the term "sci-fi" -- will show you his peerless collection of memorabilia of that genre including Bela Lugosi's cape from the Dracula films, the girl robot (you know the one we mean) from Metropolis, and the man-eating Brontasaurus from 1933's King Kong while he regales you with stories from working with such famous actors as Boris Karloff, or how he was made an "honorary lesbian" for his work under the pseudonym, "Laurajean Ermayne" or perhaps how his work as a literary agent and writer helped nurture science fiction -- maybe you prefer to hear his stories in Esperanto, (the language that combines all languages) because he's an expert. Remarkably, he does all this without leaving his Laz-E-Boy (give him a break, he's 8 million years old!)
Due to apathy, a meager attempt to save money, and the rain (seriously! it rained!! I just wanted to say that again), I spent most of this past weekend doing fuck all at home. However, somewhere around 3 o'clock on Sunday, I got dragged out to get a few drinks at Crane's Tavern, a small bar I've only recently discovered, lurking around the corner from The Henry Fonda Theater. It's very cozy inside, like...
A shadow falls on the moon during a lunar eclipse seen from Vodno Mountain, south of Macedonia's capital Skopje. (AP Photo/Boris Grdanoski) I know, I know... This is LAist's second photo essay on this weekend's lunar eclipse. But I love astronomical phenomenon so much, I just couldn't resist. Besides, it was the first total lunar eclipse in three years. According to the AP, "Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth passes between the sun and...
The trailer for Denzel’s new movie, opening on Thanksgiving weekend, explains that “you arrive at a place you’ve never been, but it feels … familiar.”

Wow... thats all you can say. Ok, scratch that. YES!!! is another word that comes to mind. Assassin, Kobra, Heart-taker... whatever you want to say, it will fit. In a game that truly exemplified the new team spirit that has swept the Lakers while also highlighting the killer instinct of the best player in the league. Kobe Bryant hit the game winning shot, in overtime, to give the Lakers a 99-98, come-from-behind game 4 victory and a huge 3-1 lead in the series.

It sounds like something Boris & Natasha would make up -- a devious plan to blow up a corner of Hollywood that includes a shopping center, a fabulous bar, and a major Hollywood/West Hollywood thoroughfare. Rumors are flying that a passenger boarded a bus near La Brea and Santa Monica and handed the driver a note saying he had a bomb in his bag. Some say traffic has ground to a halt for the fire trucks and bomb squad; others say everything is normal. We're not sure, but we want you to know that the anti-Speed may be happening even as we type. Someone put a call in to Keanu -- or add your two cents to the rumor mill.
