Extra, Extra: Bombs, Away!

Extra, Extra: Bombs, Away!

  • A bomb scare closed the short-term parking structure at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank this morning after a small suitcase was found without its owner, according to officials at the airport. The suitcase was detonated by the bomb squad and the parking lot re-opened after being closed for an hour.
  • An inert World War II-era grenade left on top of a vehicle parked in front of a bar in Santa Fe Springs prompted sheriff's deputies to evacuate the area Saturday and call for a bomb squad, NBC is reporting. What the hell is wrong with people today?
  • If you heard screams around 4 p.m. today it might have been some angry NCAA Tournament watchers. With 44 seconds left, and a six point differential between #6 Purdue and #3 Xavier, CBS cut away to the beginning of the #1 Kansas vs. #8 UNLV game. Inexplicably, they returned to the Purdue game with 10.5 remaining, further stoking the flames of CBS discontent.
  • Your car wash might be dirty, according to an LA Times investigation that found half or more of Southern California's car washes pay their workers below minimum wage, plunging some workers into even deeper poverty. I wanter if Snoop was also underpaid when he worked at a car wash.
  • Why was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar so angry when he played basketball? Apparently the former UCLA great was asked that repeatedly by white people and never by blacks. Whites may have interpreted his speaking out against racial injustices during the 60's as anger, but we all know how he felt when Jimmy asked him about being lazy in Airplane!.
  • Kathleen Soliah aka, Sarah Jane Olson aka, former Symbionese Liberation Army commando who did six years for blowing up LAPD patrol cars was re-arrested today after she was apparently released a year early. The corrections department blamed it on a "computational error," but her lawyers are calling bullshit, saying they got a letter that assured them Soliah would be paroled March 17.
  • Tomorrow's Easter may in fact be "the earliest Easter any of us ever has or ever will see. The next time the holiday will arrive this early in the year will be in 2228." Thank God I, as a Jew, don't have to worry about holidays that have rotating dates.

Extra, Extra: We Taste The Best

Extra, Extra: We Taste The Best

  • Five are dead and one person was hurt in an apparent murder-suicide in Yorba Linda, close to the Richard Nixon Library. A 14-year-old called in to report that his father had shot him. Police later found that the gunman shot his wife and 3 of his children before turning the gun on himself.
  • As we have pointed out before, it's not a good time to be a Republican. The state GOP is meeting in San Francisco (of all places) to talk about ways to help the party in which a deep rift has developed between those on the right and those to the right of them.
  • In a headline nearly as long as the entire article, the Daily News tells us: Yes, you're paying more for gas. Average is now $3.10. We need to invest in alternative fuels. We need to elect a Democrat who will explore alternative fuels. We need to elect a Repuiblican who will drill in Alaska. We need to drive more hybrids. Fuck it, I'm off to catch the bus.
  • Is Councilman Herb Wesson gearing up for a mayoral run? Hmmmmm. At least one blog might support some opposition.
  • LAX could receive greater scrutiny if a study is approved Monday that would look into diesel emissions and how noise from arriving and departing planes affects surrounding homes. It's something that Bob Hope Airport in Burbank continues to grapple with.
  • The nod for best movie may go to "No Country For Old Men," but the award for best tasting tap water has gone to Los Angeles. A panel of 10 journalists and food critics sampled sparkling, tap and bottled water from 19 states and other countries, including New Zealand, Romania, Macedonia and the Philippines before calling it for Los Angeles.

Burbank's Bob Hope Airport Status Still Unclear

Burbank's Bob Hope Airport Status Still Unclear

Hearing that Burbank's Bob Hope Airport might be grounding flights this morning, I headed over there at 5:30am. They were still allowing in the usual traffic, in spite of the fact that everyone was swerving all over the road in the dense fog. I almost got T-boned by a Flyaway shuttle. I spoke to a few passengers who were heading back to the parking structure after being told their flight to San Francisco was cancelled. more ›

Just don't say the B word

Just don't say the B word

Around four o'clock this afternoon, a Southwest Airlines flight getting ready for takeoff at Burbank's Bob Hope Airport stopped on the runway. A passenger -- who may have been in his early 20s, and may have been drunk, may have been with a group of other drunk people -- said something that alarmed the flight attendants and made the pilot stop the plane without even returning to the gate. All passengers were evacuated safely. The troublemaker hasn't yet been identified in the media, because nobody's exactly sure what he did. more ›

Why Bob Hope Rules

Why Bob Hope Rules

No two words can better describe a decadent weekend for the Angeleno than Las Vegas. This LAist poster joined the masses at the Bob Hope (a/k/a Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena) Airport on Friday afternoon for a Southwest Airlines 3 PM cattle call to the city of Lost Wages. And we didn’t mind a bit. OK, maybe a little -- but we still love us the Bob Hope… more ›
