Teen Sailor's Voyage Was OK'd By Child Protective Services

Abby Sunderland's unsuccessful attempt to circumnavigate the globe solo aboard her sailbot, Wild Eyes, and her Indian Ocean rescue have raised criticism among the public that her parents had ulterior motives for their 16-year-old daughter's voyage, and that they were foolishly endangering their child by allowing her to pursue her ambitious goal. more ›

Local Blogger Running Bid and Eat Fundraiser for Haiti

LA food blogger Gourmet Pigs is running a second installation of an online bidding-style fundraiser to bring in donations to support two groups helping with relief in Haiti. Bid and Eat is pretty straightforward concept: Several local eateries have donated offers and certificates for folks to bid on, and the proceeds will go to CHF International and Operation USA. The first Bid and Eat raised $765, so the goal for number two is $1000. Participating restaurants include Pasadena's historic The Raymond, as well as Pal Cabron, Elements Kitchen, Jian BBQ and more. Bidding ends tomorrow, March 2nd, at midnight, so head over now so you can bid, eat, and help the relief efforts in Haiti. more ›

Canter's & Ice Cream Sandwich Could Live in Perfect Harmony

We like a good cause here at LAist, and we also like a good sweet treat. So when we heard that one of our own was on a mission to get a creation of his on the menu at venerable LA deli institution Canter's we thought we'd pitch in and offer our help. Zack Jerome, the LAist sports writer who also is the man behind the Lost Angeles blog, has come up with the "Zack and White," an aptly-named assemblage using Canter's Black and White cookies and an ice cream filling. more ›

Blogger Goes Around L.A. Asking Old People for Advice on Camera

Since mid June, Seth Menachem has been walking around his Fairfax District neighborhood, getting to know his elderly neighbors, interviewing them on camera for advice and posting the captivating short clips on his blog, Life Advice from Old People. "Maybe it's because my dad died, maybe it's because I was so close to my grandparents, and maybe it's a combination of both," he explained over e-mail. "But, I love speaking to the elderly and I love getting advice from them on the things they've learned in their lives. It forces me to reevaluate my life constantly - not a bad thing. more ›

JetBlue CEO and LGB Director Bond Over Burgers, While Long Beach City Gov't Bashes Bloggers

Although formal meetings are on the books for LGB's Director, Mario Rodriguez, and JetBlue CEO Dave Barger back east later this month, the pair wound up having an impromptu lunch at In-N-Out Burger on Thursday. more ›

Blogger to Politician?

Blogger to Politician?

Speaking to poor planning and development, an opinion piece from last week in the St. Petersburg Times talks of bloggers moving from idea maker to action taker. "Many of us are angry about the impoverished environment we've inherited... Because of this brutal lack of place and community in our real world, those who Richard Florida calls 'the creative class' have been agitating for positive change by using the Internet to exchange ideas... it's just a question of time before some of these folks enter the local political scene." more ›

Local music blogger, Kevin Cogill, 27, at Antiquiet streamed nine unreleased Guns N' Roses songs from the album Chinese Democracy back in June. It was a pretty big deal: fans have been waiting for this album for about 14 years now. That excitement led to so much traffic, his site crashed. more ›

Another LA Times Blogger gets the Boot

After hearing about music blogger Kevin Bronson leaving the paper amid the many staff cuts, we find out another great blogger is slated to leave. Jesus Sanchez was one of the paper's online reporting staff and has been writing at LA Now this past year. "I'm not sure what it means when the breaking-news blogger is laid off at a time when Blogging Will Be The Paper's One And Only Salvation. Hrmph," snapped one commenter. Another reader wrote: "For a newspaper that is not known for its local coverage, laying off a native has got to be one of the dumbest decisions they could make." Sanchez will be missed by many. more ›

Talking Terroni

Talking Terroni

It seems every where you look in local food blogging or restaurant reviewing, the buzz word of the moment is Terroni, a Canadian import that just opened up an outpost in West Hollywood serving up affordable Southern Italian fare. Natalie Houghton of the Daily News (via LA.com) sums it up on both sides of the scale: "At its best: Prices are reasonable, sharing is not a problem here, and sampling a variety of Italian... more ›
