Tonight In Rock: Kele, The New Pornographers, The Foreign Exchange, One Trick Pony

Tonight Kele, former front man of English indie rock act Bloc Party (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4), will be gracing Cinespace in anticipation of his forthcoming heavily electronic solo venture—2010's The Boxer. (Canceled!) Raleigh-by-way-of-Netherlands Grammy-nominated hip hop duo the Foreign Exchange are poised to headline the Roxy in Hollyweird. And, lastly, local indie rockers One Trick Pony will be performing at Echo Curio. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Music Box at Henry Fonda to catch prolific Canadian indie rockers the New Pornographers, who will be concluding their two-night stint. LAist favorites, San Francisco-based psych-folk-pop act the Dodos are slated to kick things off. more ›

Bloc Party and Menomena @ The Hollywood Palladium, 4/15/09

             + 1 more

Hailing from the great Northwest, experimental indie rockers Menomena took the stage before a sold out crowd at the Palladium on Wednesday in support of their latest album Friend and Foe. Having never seen these guys before, I was really excited to see whether or not they could pull off their famed experimental hooks on stage. This band has made their name by writing albums of chaotic creativity. Therefore, I thought, surely even if the music was bad it wouldn't be dull. more ›

TV Junkie: Obama-Leno Ratings; Leno on 'Top Gear'

According to the LA Times, about 1 in 4 TVs were tuned to "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" when President Barack Obama made an appearance last week. Leno has had higher ratings only 3 other times in the past, but the media space is a lot more crowded than it was even 4 years ago, so it was a stellar night for NBC. more ›

Tonight In Rock: The Pretenders, Pop Levi, Longwave, Daedelus

Tonight LA has its fair share of shows. Club Nokia in Downtown will play host to Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders, who will be accompanied by prominent indie rockers like Bloc Party (LAist Review, #2), CSS and Black Kids. LA locals Obi Best (LAist Review), a pop songstress who sings back-up vocals for the Bird and the Bee, and El Ten Eleven (LAist Review), a purely instrumental duo, are slated to perform at the Hotel Café. NY-based shoegazers Longwave will be rocking out at the Troubadour, ushering in their first record in over three years. And, lastly, electronic mastermind Daedelus is headlining the 10th Beat Invitational at the Airliner. But we strongly suggest seeing English psych-pop singer-songwriter Pop Levi (LAist Review), who will be sauntering onstage with bravado at Spaceland. more ›

Since they burst on the scene a few years ago, there is one thing that has remained constant in the many live performances from UK imports Bloc Party and that is their ability to constantly deliver a stand-out performance. While their catalog consists of only two LPs and a few singles here and there, their sound still feels fresh and live their tracks are almost all crowd pleasers. more ›

Dim Mak Teams Up With Downtown Music

Dim Mak Teams Up With Downtown Music

The LA Times reports that local indie stalwarts Dim Mak Records has made a deal with Downtown Music (Gnarls Barkley, Cold War Kids, Art Brut, Justice) in which Dim Mak will continue to discover and develop new artists, and Downtown will give them that boost in distribution and promotion that Dim Mak has never been fortunate enough to be able to offer. Sounds like a deal that could make everyone happy. more ›

CMJ Day Two

CMJ Day Two

Yesterday commenced with an LA bang. I started off at the Indaba music loft again because they have been hosting a plethora of good (free!) shows. There's something comforting about watching bands from someone else's living room. I showed up around mid-day to catch one of my favorite LA bands Division Day. Front man Rohner Segnitz and the boys ran through a pleasant acoustic set. With drummer Kevin Lenhart on shakers, Division Day sounded... more ›

LA Weekly Detour Festival @ City Hall, 10/6/07

There was so much choice at this year's Detour Festival as French Electro duo Justice and British Indie darlings Bloc Party topped the bill however, one couldn't help but compare this year's lineup to last year's, the inaugural year, which featured Beck and Queens of the Stone Age and smaller acts like Of Montreal, Blonde Redhead, Basement Jaxx among others. While sporting more acts and another stage the overall quality or the acts was... more ›

Bloc Party, Justice, Satellite Party, Celebrity Skin Confirmed for Detour Fest 2 - Good as the First?

LA Weekly's inaugural Detour music festival rocked downtown last October, with frenzied dancing, drinking, and dope smoking on the downtown streets, City Hall lawn, and even St. Vibiana's Cathedral with the likes of Beck, Blonde Redhead, !!!, Queens of the Stone Age, Basement Jaxx, and Nortec Collective. The second Detour is a day-long music extravaganza that's set up to be quite the, um, party, with headliners: Bloc Party, Satellite Party, Justice, Celebrity Skin, and... more ›

LA Booker Interview: Jennifer Tefft of Spaceland

LA is home to dozens of classic, independent, badass rock clubs. Many of these clubs helped launch most of your favorite groups. But those bands would have never made it on stage if it wasn't for the booker, the person who actually hires the bands to play the show on the particular date. Wednesday we introduced you to Patrick from Safari Sam's. Today we are very happy to share with you the all caps... more ›

Kiss SXSW Good-Bye

Kiss SXSW Good-Bye

Now that I have recovered from nine days and nights at SXSW, I can tell you that it's all downhill from here for the world's greatest music festival. No way could anything top that. 1750 bands and hardly any of them sucked. How does that happen? Plenty of free food, beer, no lines if you had a badge. Stalwarts like The Stooges, Pete Townshend, Robyn Hitchcock, Public Enemy, Peter Case, Rickie Lee Jones, and... more ›

Austinist Lists 240 Bands That Will Be At SXSW

There are really only two major music festivals that truly matter, like really matter: Coachella and South by Southwest. The former happens over two three days in the desert near Palm Springs, the latter rages for about a week on the dusty streets of Austin, Texas. SXSW features over 1,000 bands. You buy a wristband and you wander from bar to bar, club to club, alleyway to patio and you get to see some... more ›
