Black Eyed Peas, 25 Men Represent Dodgers

The LA-based group Black Eyed Peas are showing their love of the Dodgers by being featured in a "This Is My Town" billboard. A season-long campaign to highlight fan loyalty and the diversity of the Dodgers and Dodger fans, the Black Eyed Peas are the most recent celebrities to grace the billboard campaign that have also featured Snoop Dogg, Yoda, Lakers point guard Sasha Vujacic and other celebrities and Dodger players.

If you put together a dream lineup for a hip hop show, chances are it would look something like this year’s Rock the Bells festival. This year’s incarnation featured the reunion (finally!) of one of the most acclaimed hip hop outfits in history, A Tribe Called Quest as well as the first performance in years from California’s own Pharcyde. But was from top to bottom a who’s who of Hip Hop both past and present. (Story continued below photo gallery)

Everyday, the Mayor's office sends us his schedule. Alarm goes off at 5 a.m., snooze is hit for another 9 minutes. 5:09 a.m., snooze button, part 2. Okay, it's not that detailed. However, with Big Sunday (are you volunteering?), the mayor is busier than usual for a weekend. He has six appearances from 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. ranging from hanging with the Black Eyed Peas at Paramount Studios, giving trees away with the...

Monday program on R&B station V100-FM, Bo Taylor, a radio host whose show has become something of a group therapy session for gang members.

If you are done with traditional theatre with stage/actor, seats/audience, tonight is a good night to break that mold. The Farm is an ongoing series of evenings of new, short plays written and directed by local writers and performed in unusual, site-specific settings. This installment includes pieces specifically written for the loft spaces at Bedlam on 6th Street by some of Los Angeles' edgiest writers; an original dance piece created especially for the space by Collective Static; and a live soundtrack by the ground-breaking musical duo Brain Garden.

While some of us were busy debating the value of Coachella, high school kids have reminded us not to underestimate their passion for blatantly commercial music. According to an article from the Daily News, area students submitted 10 million text messages for a chance to win a concert with the Black Eyed Peas. Controversy ensued, audits took place, a school was disqualified and San Fernando High ultimately emerged victorious. Not surprisingly, the contest was sponsored by a wireless company. Times have changed. We still rememember sitting in our student council sponsor's classroom endlessly filling out postcards to win a radio station contest with Stacy Q. "Two of hearts. Two hearts that beat as one."

Tuesday is the biggest day of the week for audiophiles. We're like kids in
a candy store. In the spirit of that dizzy euphoria, we're launching our weekly
guide to what's hot and what's not. Since LAist is an online entity, our primary
focus on Tuesdays will be digital downloads. Why? We think digital is the
future of music. For instance, Warner Music recently announced plans for a
digital label, dubbed Cordless; Apple, Cingular and Motorola teamed
up to make ROKR; and iTunes now
offers digital liner notes for many of the albums in its catalogue. If video
    killed the radio star
, then digital music is the successor to the aging MTV.

    What's Hot:

The best-selling digital singles this week were Kanye
    West's Gold
    Digger
    ,
    Fall Out Boy's Sugar,
    We're Goin' Down
    , Black Eyed Peas' My
    Humps
    ,
    Missy Elliot's Lose
    Control
    and Green Day's Wake
    Me Up When September Ends
    .*

    Online Exclusives:

Over at iTunes, you can pre-order Fiona
    Apple's long-awaited Extraordinary
    Machine
    , Sheryl Crow's Wildflower, Franz
    Ferdinand's You
Could Have It So Much Better
    , and Depeche
    Mode's Playing
    The Angel
. If you purchase the Depeche Mode album, you're also
eligible for an exclusive pre-sale for their forthcoming tour.

    What's New:

  • Blonde from Fargo released Only in It for the Blondes.
  • Valentin Ceja released Valentin Ceja y Su Rock 'N' Banda.
  • George Clinton released Best of George Clinton Live.

Here are five songs that are topping our iTunes playlist this week...

  • Kick back and relax with Death Cab for Cutie's I
Will Follow You Into The Dark
    . Death Cab play the
    Wiltern
    on October 21.

  • Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am teams with DMC and Sarah McLachlan on the Just
    Like Me
. The unusual "Cats in the Cradle" cover is plucked from
    McLachlan's new Bloom remix
CD. The collaboration is odd, but it works. Of course, MacLachlan could sing
the phone book and it would still sound amazing. Catch
Black Eyed Peas with Gwen Stefani on October 21 at the
    Hollywood Bowl
    .

  • Amos Lee slows things down a notch in Speed
    of the Sound of Loneliness
    . Some
call him the male Norah Jones. We think he's more interesting and less
predictable than Jones. Check out his Keep
    It Loose, Keep It Tight
EP. You can hear Lee at the
    Avalon
    on
    November 17.

While Hustle & Flow got most of the buzz coming out of Sundance and Love & War were the themes of the two big jury prize winners, we're most excited about Dave LaChappelle's short (now a full length documentary), Krumped. After being featured in videos by Missy Elliott and the Black Eyed Peas last year, we wondered if the local dance movement was going to quickly lose its lustre but, thankfully, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Is it just us or are the 47th Grammy Awards Nominations woefully lacking in Los Angeles based artists and bands? Oh sure, the Black Eyed Peas and No Doubt make a few appearances and Snoop Dogg's Neptunes produced "Drop It Like It's Hot" rightfully competes for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group but these are all the usual suspects.

If you're an Angeleno brave enough to venture outside in the cold tomorrow, there are good times to be had.

LAist was surprised and intrigued to find out that they're all Honorary Committee Members for the Kerry/Edwards Campaign and probably have, really, no involvement whatsoever in the Saturday, October 2nd event "An Evening with Kerry/Edwards" featuring musical artists such as the Black Eyed Peas.
