[O]ur friends at Found LA have decided to get together and throw us a party at their amazing gallery in Silverlake (Google Map here), with free drinks and a cake to boot. It goes from 8PM - 10PM this Saturday (12/15) and is bound to be a blast...
Recently, porn starlets Avy Lee Roth (MySpace) and Kat (MySpace) celebrated their respective birthdays with a party at Facade (formerly known as Ivar) in Hollywood.
Driving down Sunset tonight we saw smoke billowing from what we feared was Safari Sam's. As we got closer we saw that it was not the rock club ablaze nor the 99 Cents store (thank God) but a car in the parking lot. All by itself. As if it had just spontaneously combusted.
Some would say that one of the nice things about LA is our lack of Wal*Marts. Truth of the matter is, in order to give the Walton Family your money you pretty much have to leave LA County. Digg today reminds us what we're missing. Here we have a birthday cake that was (hopefully) ordered over the phone. Although the quality is (hilariously) lacking, you can bet that the price was right....
Last weekend we were happy to take part in the Harvest Festival, as part of a year-long 90th Anniversary celebration for the historic San Antonio Winery, a place much loved by LAist. The gracious Riboli family hosted the event, which was held at the winery, which has been in its same location on Lamar Street in East Los Angeles since 1917. There was food provided by the winery's onsite Maddalena restaurant, and wine aplenty...

I have an occasional habit of going to get coffee with a friend on weeknights at the 101 Cafe (6145 Franklin Ave, right across from The Hollywood Tower). It's just so darn comfortable. And of course, it's open till around 3am, so it's a perfect Late Night Eats spot. Attached to a mighty fancier than normal, even kind of hip, Best Western hotel, the 101 Cafe has a true retro feel, complete with a...
Selecting a gift for a loved one is tough, especially if the occasion is a 226th Birthday. What do you get the City of Los Angeles? After all, she already has it all!
Did you know today is the 226th birthday of El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora La Reina de Los Angeles -- aka L.A.? The old bitch is looking pretty good for her age! Although the city did not incorporate until 1850, September 4th, 1781 is the date that 44 Mexican pobladores set out from San Gabriel with a military escort to settle alongside a great river -- then called the Rio de Porciuncula, later to...
As the Sunday morning sunrise warmed the lawn of the San Gabriel Mission, dedicated celebrants gathered with the Pobladores 200 to recognize LA’s upcoming 226th birthday by retracing the steps of the original settlers who established El Pueblo de la Reina de Los Angeles in 1781. San Gabriel is quite proud of its contribution to the “birth” of Los Angeles and a significant contingent of enthusiastic San Gabriel volunteers were on hand to outfit and...
Award-winning Canadian blogger Lauren White, aka Raymi, was kind enough to take us up on our request to write a few things about Jack Kerouac on his most famous book's birthday.
Today is what would have been the anniversary of Charles Bukowski's 87th year on this planet, had he not passed away in 1994. I really wish I had it in me to writing something amazing in honor of the man, but I'm not sure it can be done. What can you write about a man who revolutionized literature with a style that has yet to be rivaled? All I can think to do on...

The diversity of MacArthur Park couldn't be more dramatic than the 1940's style old school deli known for its pastrami as Langer's Deli, firmly entrenched on Alvarado, and surrounded by Central- and South American cuisine and shops. Langer's keeps it so real that they close at 4pm and take Sundays off. They have cozy, leather booths, a big menu, and bigger servings. LA Observed reminds us that Langer's celebrates their 60th birthday with a...

Why Winchell’s when it could be someplace with some buzz, like Frittelli’s in Beverly Hills, or Donut Man in Glendora or Stan’s in Westwood? Or at least someplace with huge fake donut on it? Well, in the interest of full disclosure, I have never been to any of those places. You could even say that my donut credentials are a little weak. I’ve had Krispy Kreme, I’ve had Honey Dew, and Dunkin Donuts, I’ve...

Last night's only local action on the field, court, or ice was the Kings. Since nobody was surprised that they fell 3-2 to the Phoenix Coyotes, we figured we'd use this edition to ask a simple question: What kind of freebies can you get in LA on your birthday? A certain LAist sports editor remembers getting cones at Baskin Robins, and this past Tuesday YAS (Yoga and Spinning) in Venice Beach invited him down for...
