Good Luck Bar to Celebrate its 15th Birthday

Sean MacPherson, the man behind some of L.A.'s most popular bars, announced today that his Hollywood-Los Feliz-Silver Lake neighborhood hang, the Good Luck Bar, will celebrate its 15th birthday later this month. On Thursday, November 19, DJ Travis Keller and Chinese burlesque dancers will entertain patrons as they guzzle down $5.00 Stolichnaya, Sailor Jerry, Cazadores, or Jack Daniel's cocktails and selected beers for $2.00 beers (plus: Kogi BBQ will be outside). In 1994, MacPherson took over the space, formerly a Mexican transvestite bar, and based it on his favorite Chinatown bar, Yee Mee Loo, which closed its doors after 40 years. The Birth of the Internet, 40 Years Ago at UCLA

When the first internet transmission happened, there was no celebration. In fact, the guys behind it back on October 29th, 1969 (40 years and one day ago), invented the internet and called it a night. That's because at the time, they had no idea that their solution to an annoying problem would start changing the world years later. In case you missed it, NPR yesterday did a fascinating report on the events leading up to the birth of ARPANET:

Happy Birthday, John Wooden

Arguably the best coach in sports history, former UCLA men's basketball head coach John Wooden turns the big 99 today. Born on October 14, 1910 in the tiny town of Hall, Indiana, his family would move to Martinsville, IN where he would play in the state high school championships for the Martinsville High School basketball team 1926-1928 winning only once in 1927 against Muncie Central 26-23.

Last Saturday, pornstar, American Apparel model, and Fleshbot Crush Object Faye Reagan -- who is on the back cover of the current issue of LA Weekly -- celebrated her 21st birthday with a party at a lavish Encino mansion high above the San Fernando Valley.

It's been a busy couple of weeks for Pasadena's Armory Center for the Arts, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary year with the exhibition Installations Inside/Out. It began with skywriting art last week, followed up by eight public art installations around the city, an hour-and-a-half theatre show performed in a busy intersection during 15-second crosswalk-intervals and a large gallery show featuring and supporting Southern California artists.

Just a quick reminder, tomorrow is the pier's 100th birthday. Wish it well or join the festivities tomorrow night beginning at 6 p.m.

The front man of Jane's Addiction, Porno For Pyros, Satellite Party and a number of other side projects celebrated his 50th birthday with a rock 'n roll blow out at the Mirage in Las Vegas Saturday night. It was a who's who of Hollywood and Rock N Roll with Deborah Harry, Bill Morrison, Tom Morello, Billy Idol, Juliette Lewis, Sen Dog, Bobo (both of Cypress Hill) and many more in attendance. Check out the flyer with all the guests for the complete list.

Barbie, the Ultimate California Blonde, Turns 50 Today

Of course, a lady never reveals her true age, but when it comes to pop culture icons, sometimes it's hard to hide a milestone.

Happy 90th Birthday, Grand Canyon!

It may be out-of-state, 500 miles and some 6-7 hours away by car, but it's a pretty dope National Park, so a shout out is deserved. And little closer to home, Joshua Tree National Park will be celebrating its 15th anniversary on Halloween (now that could be a party to rival West Hollywood's bash).

Here at LAist we love freebies as much as anyone. We like to give you the heads up about free breakfast, free cupcakes, free tickets and more. So when we heard that Disneyland was giving free tickets on your birthday, we thought the least we could do was go check it out.

Eat This: Cupcake with Pan Fried Peanut Butter

Happy 74th Birthday, Elvis! If you were alive today (oh wait, conspiracy theory #1445 says you are alive), you would have loved this cupcake with one of your favorite foods that we just tasted at Crumbs Bake Shop.

To celebrate their thirty year birthday, Morton's (The Steakhouse) will be giving away free Mini-Prime Burgers (aka sliders) this Sunday. One catch though. It's only from 5 to 6 p.m. And sorry large parties, this offer is available only at the bar (I guess that's two catches then.) Available at all Morton's locations.

Disney wants you to spend your birthday money at their parks next year so they're letting you in for free in 2009. You've just got to prove your birthday with a valid ID. And for those who are annual pass holders, then you get a FastPass which lets you cruise to near the beginning of the line. Maybe street artist Banksy will visit again after installing his Guantanamo Bay piece (video) a couple years ago.

On Monday, we observed Los Angeles' birthday (really, it was Labor Day), but today is the actual birthday of Los Angeles. In an LA Times' editorial today, they ask an important one: "where do L.A. natives go to reconnect with the city's history?"

Los Angeles' 227th birthday is actually on September 4, but early this morning was the annual Pobladores "Walk to Los Angeles" nine-mile Re-enactment.

If Wagner was still alive today, he would have just celebrated his 195th (!) birthday yesterday. His influence was felt by many including Baudelaire, Freud, Joyce, Nietzsche, and any/every important contemporary of his. Some recent adaptations in mainstream media that come to mind include a terrible Tristan + Isolde movie and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy (based off of Wagner's Ring cycle).

-->Today was the second worldwide Anonymous protest organized via March15.org, the Anonymous website dedicated to the founder's birthday, two days prior. A few hundred protestors hit Hollywood Blvd. at L. Ron Hubbard Way in the East Hollywood area. The Scientologist center had a film permit and they were doing some kind of filming. Also their TV billboard was playing inspirational-like videos with Disney-esque music, which provided a creepy soundtrack to the visuals of people protesting in masks.

This is hilarious... and weird. Back in 1998, my family took my grandmother out for her 89th birthday to a restaurant that fused French and Asian. The quaint little restaurant in Chicago's suburban North Shore village of Wilmette was appropriately named Chinsoiserie. The seven of us were seated and we immediately ordered fifty dollars worth of delicious appetizers. When it came time to order our meals, half of what we desired sent the waitress...

Dear Mr. President, Since its your big 61st birthday today, and it seems as though things don't seem to be going so well for you, we thought we'd post a video from the good old days. Tom Waits, the adorably gruff-voiced hat-wearing homeless-looking storyteller of such classic albums as "Rain Dogs", "Frank's Wild Years" and "Bone Machine" has the most popular CD collection at Hollywood's Amoeba last week (November 28 thru December 5). The accomplishment is quite a feat since "Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards" is a triple CD box set of B-sides and rarities, with an Amoeba price of $42.98. Waits was also #1 at the SF Amoeba location...

Gram Parsons left us for a better place 23 years ago. If he were still alive, he would be coming up on celebrating his 59th birthday. Gram is often referred to as the worlds first Country/Rock Star. He has maintained an incredible cult following through the years - how could he not being one of the first to discover Emmylou Harris, he played shortly with the Birds and had the ultimate rock-star notch in...
