Earlier this week, word got around that Google Transit was up and working in beta mode. Today, it became the real deal. Over 200 bus lines and five lines with more than 2.5 million data points are now on Google Transit, an option found on Google Maps.

Can a transit agency be considered "green" if they aren't meeting their emission level standards? The state Air Resources Board thinks not, and have hit Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus line with a $21,000 fine "for failing to conduct required diesel emissions testing and maintaining appropriate records, among other violations," according to LA Now. Per the regulator, the popular fleet of around 200 buses "also failed to keep emission levels at no more than 60% of 2005 levels as required." Recently, the Big Blue Bus announced they'd be further greening their fleet by purchasing hybrid buses from a SoCal company with federal stimulus funds. This fine stems from "a legal case settlement," that also stipulates the transit agency school their employees on being "green" and requiring their drivers spend less time idling.

Federal stimulus funds are bound for Santa Monica, where their Big Blue Bus has plans for the $12.8 million, according to Yahoo!Business. The funds come with the stipulation they be "used for capital expenditures and not for operating costs or service enhancements."

Despite being in use in some capacity for some months now, today is apparently the day Metro will "unveil" the TAP card, and "will be introduced at Union Station by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who chairs the MTA board," reports the Daily Breeze.

The always popular Santa Monica based Big Blue Bus has done it again, adding its second Rapid bus line to their service line. Like Metro's Rapid Routes and their own Rapid 3 that runs down Lincoln Blvd. between Santa Monica and the LAX area, Rapid 7 will have a limited number of stops, cutting down on travel time (even beyond the Super 7 that it's replacing). It basically runs back and forth between downtown Santa Monica and the Rimpau Transit Center approximately between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. with a small three hour(ish) break from 9 a.m. to noon. ALSO: And now with the school season back in session, the Any Line Any Time service, where Santa Monica College students and staff ride for free, will begin.

As gas prices rise and government coffers tighten, the city of Santa Monica's Big Blue Bus service is asking for Santa Monican's and the public-at-large's help for an issue that reaches far beyond the oceanside city's boundaries.
