Tonight In Rock: Jon Brion, Cold War Kids, Joseph Arthur, Jemina Pearl

Tonight, as always, local multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be jamming with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. Akron-bred folk rock singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur is poised to kick off a two-night stint at the Troubadour with none other than the son of Paul Simon, Harper Simon. LAist favorite Jemina Pearl, lead singer of acclaimed Nashville-based garage rock outfit Be Your Own Pet, will be gracing the Echo. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Wiltern to catch Long Beach-bred indie rock stalwarts the Cold War Kids (LAist Review, #2). Clap Your Hands Say Yeah front man Alec Ounsworth is slated to kick things off. more ›

Tonight in Rock: Reeve Oliver, Mountain Goats, Jeffrey Lewis

Tuesdays are usually slow nights in LA for music and as bands prep to head Texas-way for SXSW, we'll probably see even fewer choices like tonight. But fewer doesn't mean worse. Mountain Goats and Jeffrey Lewis (great video below) play at the Troubadour tonight (and tomorrow), Working For A Nuclear Free City is back with another concert, this time at Cinespace (though it's a private premier party. Crash?) and LA Weekly says to head over to Glendale and check out The Scene. more ›

Dim Mak Teams Up With Downtown Music

Dim Mak Teams Up With Downtown Music

The LA Times reports that local indie stalwarts Dim Mak Records has made a deal with Downtown Music (Gnarls Barkley, Cold War Kids, Art Brut, Justice) in which Dim Mak will continue to discover and develop new artists, and Downtown will give them that boost in distribution and promotion that Dim Mak has never been fortunate enough to be able to offer. Sounds like a deal that could make everyone happy. more ›

Coachella Expands to 3 Days, followed by a 2-Day Country Fest

Because you really can't get too much of a good thing, the good people of Goldenvoice announced last night that this year's hugely successful Coachella music and arts festival will grow to a three-day-and-night affair on the sprawling polo fields in Indio outside Palm Springs. The Miracle Mile concert promoters also announced that the weekend after Coachella they will throw a two-day country festival that will include stages for alt-country, bluegrass, and even storytelling.... more ›

Arthur Nights Begins Tonight Downtown

If the Sunset Junction was too hip, and the Weekly Detour Fest was too cool, and what you're after is something with a little more edge, something you won't accidentally run into your high school assistant principal at - The Arthur Nights is your godsend. Guaranteed to be weird, the kids over at Spaceland have moved the festival downtown to the legendary Palace Theater and tonight's acts feature underground darling Devendra Banhart (above). Throughout... more ›

Bonnaroo - Last Day

Bonnaroo - Last Day

The day started with Nashville teenage kids done good Be Your Own Pet at the That tent. They deviated from the Bonnaroo norm of long, pleasant sets with a loud, angsty performance that hit on most of their debut album in a scorching 25 minutes. It was quick, but was one of the genuine standout performances of the festival when it was all said and done. At the very least, it shook out some of our sleep deprived cobwebs and got the day off to a roaring start. more ›

Top Five New CD Releases

Top Five New CD Releases

Be Your Own Pet Be Your Own Pet (Ecstatic Peace) – Thurston Moore signed this teenage band from Nashville. Critics like to compare the lead singer to Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Most critics think it’s a fun, infectious record but detractors criticize the lack of sophistication. The whole thing only lasts 33 minutes. Tickets are still available for their show at the Troubadour on June 27th. more ›

DCist is screwed in the event of an oil crisis. Not that we're not all screwed in the event of an oil crisis, just D.C. is more screwed. Don't sell your car yet, District resident, a cabbie can kick you to the curb if he doesn't like your address. Not even Metro can save you now. more ›

Coachella - Sunday Preview

Coachella - Sunday Preview

We have many fond memories from Coachellas past, but right now we're totally jealous of that Lollapalooza lineup. Sunday tickets are sold out. You'll either have to buy a two-day pass or take your chances in the secondary market. more ›
