Those artist-inspired USB flash drives known as The Mimobots (see the image to the right) have taken over the Munky King Shop on Melrose for all of November. Tonight is the opening party (7 to 10 p.m.) and Thomas Han himself will be live painting with artists Brian McCarty and Lili Chin on hand. Also: Keeping to a design trend here, Heath Ceramics on Beverly is showing off 75 limited edition canisters tonight.

April 1970, 9:00 am. A teenager, walking down Beverly Boulevard with his brother and sister stumbled upon the old building. It must've been three-stories high. Despite heavy traffic on the streets, near the eerie looking structure there was no-one about. There was certainly nobody residing within the walls, the forlorn face of the building had blackened windows, and there were no signs to indicate it had been in use recently.

Sacramento Bill is Pro-Writers, Artists
State Senator Sheila Kuehl is at it again, but this time it's not about speed cameras in Beverly Hills, it's about writers and other artists getting their fair share of residuals. In a press release from the Writers Guild of America, they explain the problem of underselling television series and movies and what SB1765, the "Fair Market Value Bill," aims to do:
Since the major media networks in the United States have come to own many cable channels, the practice of selling TV series or movies for less than the fair market value of the content has become more and more prevalent. In many cases, the product is sold or licensed from one entity to another entity within the same parent company. This creates a problem for actors, writers, and performers who rely on the amount of a sale of material for their residuals – payments made to the creators or performers of a work for showings or screenings after an initial use.Kuehl, who represents parts of Los Angeles and Ventura County is a SAG member herself. "Many of my constituents work within the entertainment industry, and I have recently heard more and more about the growing practice of selling entertainment content, such as television series or films, for less than their fair market value. This practice has a deeply detrimental effect on the amount of compensation for creative talent like writers and actors. But the damage goes further because so-called below-the-line staff, like the Teamsters, rely on the proceeds from such a sale of content to fund their health and pension plans. This bill simply ensures that workers in the entertainment industry have the protection they need."
Beverly Hills Seeking to Use Speed Cameras
A few weeks ago, we reported on Senate Bill 1142, which would widen the use of enforcement cameras in California from intersections to roadways where photos and video could capture speeding cars on streets, ultimately sending the violator a ticket in the mail. Senator Dutton's office said it was a spot bill and later released a statement to highwayrobbery.net, an enforcement camera advocacy site:

Causing the most commotion on the red carpet was Eduardo Verastequi, the star of "Bella," who would shortly walk off with The Grace Award for Most Inspirational Movie Acting in 2007. A small group of women in front of me swooned and reached for their cameras, grabbing him before he even made it on to the carpet and he graciously acquiesced. Hmm - this I had to follow. Just moments ago, in a letter to its members, the WGA announced that writers have voted by a 92.5% margin to lift the “restraining order” and officially end the strike. The move comes on Day 100 of the labor dispute.
Edelweiss Chocolates: Sweets With Heart in Beverly Hills
Remember that episode of I Love Lucy where Lucy and Ethel get a job in a chocolate factory? Of course you do! Along with the grape-stomping scene, it is one of the classics of physical humor. The conveyor belt in the Edelweiss Chocolate Factory, located right in the center of downtown Beverly Hills, was the inspiration for that scene.
Bansky, Banksy, Are You Out There?
LAist contributer Osmany Rodriguez found a few fresh new Banksy paintings near the New Beverly Cinema. As you may already know, Banksy is the elusive guerrilla street artist responsible for some of the most interesting art in the city (not to mention the entire world). He's a trickster figure who never shows his face, but joined Steve Jones in the Indie 103.1 studios earlier this week (that's how we know he's been in L.A. recently).
