Englishman Bert Jansch, for nearly fifty years considered one of the world’s great practitioners of the acoustic guitar, has been spending an unusual amount of time in the United States this year, much of it as the guest and opening act of Neil Young. Young not only acknowledged Jansch’s “Needle of Death” as the source of an untintentional/ subliminal rip in his own “Ambulance Blues” years ago, he’s brought Jansch on stage to perform as a duet, as if to erase any lingering doubts: even I rip off some stuff once in a while, and some of it was from this guy. (One only wishes Jimmy Page might be as generous with the acknowlegements.)
Bert Jansch and the Pegi Young Band @ Largo at the Coronet 06/20/10
Tonight In Rock: Erykah Badu, Baaba Maal, Bert Jansch, Geographer
Tonight Dallas-bred multiple Grammy Award-winning soul singer-songwriter Erykah Badu will be headlining the Greek Theatre with none other than Kansas City-bred pop singer-songwriter Janelle Monae and Chicago-based hip hop artist Lupe Fiasco. Scottish folk singer-songwriter and former member of Pentagle Bert Jansch is finally making his return to the US following an illness that scuttled his planned 2008 tour, and will be playing at the Largo Coronet tonight with special guest Pegi Young. And, lastly, LAist favorites, San Franciscan indie pop trio Geographer will be gracing Spaceland. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Hollywood Bowl to catch Brooklyn-based buzz band Yeasayer and local afro-centric indie pop act Fool's Gold, who will be warming up the stage for Senegalese singer-songwriter Baaba Maal and Tinariwen, a band of Saharan musicians from northern Mali.
Honeycut's Top 10 Best CDs of 2006
Not that we care what they think in Frisco but the SF Weekly (wait, we thought you weren't supposed to call it SF? hmmmm) named Honeycut the Best Soul/Funk Band in town.
Tonight in Rock in LA - Rancid, Boyz, Ettes, Bo, Lyrics Born
The Pogues were so bad last night at the Wiltern that we left early and can't really recommend them tonight, but we will list them because, we'll they're the Pogues. The problem was Shane was so drunk/fucked-up/brain damaged that it was sad. LAist are HUGE Pogues fans. Over the last three days we've listed them three times and posted two different videos. Which is what made last night's show so heartbreaking. It was like watching Ozzy on that MTV show when he was at his lowest. See anything else.
