LAist Interview: Dodgers Blogger Diamond Leung

Diamond Leung still loves baseball and journalism. But you'd understand if he didn't. After five years at the Riverside-Press Enterprise, two of those as the Dodgers beat writer, Leung, 27, was laid off from his post after the paper eliminated most of its baseball coverage. The San Francisco native and UCLA grad, at right, moved back to his hometown and did what any young, self respecting unemployed baseball lover would do: start a blog. The aptly named Diamond Notes is a baseball news source that aggregates some of the more interesting finds others may miss. We caught up with him yesterday, touching on the Dodgers diminishing World Series hopes, life after journalism and why he doesn't watch baseball on T.V.

In the second round UCLA is routed by the Villanova Wildcats 89-69. The very physical game was never close, and UCLA looked softer than butter in the face of the 1-3-1 zone employed by the Wildcats.

Tourney Talk with Jason King of Yahoo! Sports

We are counting down to the madness. One of the most exciting days in sports and the least productive work days on the calendar, the opening round of the NCAA Men's Basketball Championships, is less than 24 hours away.

As we mentioned earlier today, Los Angeles native Baron Davis is headed home and he's bringing his beard and 21 points per game with him. The former Crossroads School and UCLA standout came to a verbal agreement with the LA's other team, making the Clippers suddenly relevant and a playoff contender. Baron credits the community for his decision telling ESPN, "I'm happy with where I'm going. A big reason is because of the impact and the things that I can do going forward. I knew I could have done them here and created all kinds of good things and positive things in the community, and ultimately, me going home helps me make an impact on young kids." Elton Brand, who opted out Monday is expected to re-sign with the Clips for a hometown discount. Baron and Brand! Clipper Nation hasn't been this excited since the Red, White and Blue marched all the way into the second round of the playoffs in 2006.

If you can really only afford to watch one game throughout the entire Pacific Life Pac-10 Tournament, then this is the one. The sports world has been hyping today's UCLA-Cal Men's rematch as the centerfold of this week-long event, given the RECENT CONTROVERSY and tension between the two teams.

How does UCLA celebrate winning a tough game against the Washington State Cougars? By tanking it against the Washington Huskies.

What with all the Big Game festivities going on this weekend, a girl can't help but think back fondly upon her alma mater. But you know what? It's only been a few years since I left UCLA, and I gotta say -- I almost don't recognize the place anymore. Has it really been so long since I graduated? Five years? Maybe more? So much has changed -- I came of age in the Steve...

He was a dominant force at Westchester High School. He was part of the first year of Ben Howland’s turnaround at UCLA. And now he is a Laker. Trevor Ariza has come home, bringing with him some amazing dunks, good defense and a high-energy game that should fit in well with the young core of the Lakers. He was traded for veterans Brian Cook and Mo Evans. Call us crazy, but this is the rare...

There have been student reports of gay sexual encounters occuring in the Royce Hall bathroom over the past year. Campus police have confirmed that more than one report has been filed on this matter. One student suggests that gay sex is occuring through holes that exist between the stalls and urinals in the bathroom -- kinky? Some are claiming that gay students (or visitors perhaps) turn to bathroom sex as a way to cope...

Let's first get some stuff out of the way. You know what I'm talking about -- that last year stuff. UCLA lost to Florida in the final round of the NCAA tournament last year by 16 points, outplayed up and down the court. But if you've been watching closely, if you even have a sense of what's going on, you know that a different Bruin team will be marching into the Georgia Dome tomorrow afternoon....

Tobacco Road, watch your back. Gainesville, better enjoy that trophy while you’ve got it. LA is back with a vengeance and is ready to reclaim its place atop the college basketball kingdom. With UCLA and USC both advancing to the Sweet 16 for only the second time ever, the local buzz hasn’t been this great in decades. The Bruins have been a consistently good program since the departure of John Wooden from the sidelines...

Nuggets 113, Lakers 86 - When Phil Jackson went to bed on Wednesday, he was probably looking forward to the day ahead. Things were set up nicely for a home game with Lamar Odom and Luke Walton both returning from injuries. Then his alarm clock rang. Within a few hours, the NBA dished out $100,000 in fines for his comments about a Kobe "witchhunt" and the Lakers lost for the seventh time in a row....

UCLA Men's Basketball The UCLA Bruins will play the Cal Golden Bears in the PAC-10 Men's Basketball Tournament. As they file of the bus into the local Staple Center, they will be looking for a win against Cal in order to advance and secure the No.1 seed for the NCAA tournament. 2:30pm PT, no television coverage FSN. Two Men Charged in Cadaver Scandal Two individuals involved in the Willed Body Program were arrested yesterday...

With apologies to all of the other Southland programs, tomorrow’s showdown between UCLA and USC is to determine who is the top dog in our local college basketball scene. More importantly, the winner will maintain their hold on first place in the Pac-10, which is shaping up to be the toughest conference in the country. As all of the football fans know, you can throw out records and tradition when it comes to rivalry...

UCLA completed their last exhibition game last Thursday night coming out on top of Humboldt State. Incoming freshmen Russell Westbrook and Michael Roll had great performances alongside veterans Josh Shipp and Arron Afflalo. Although the team is amidst a major transition this year, Coach Ben Howland has expressed much confidence towards this week’s opener against BYU. Major stumbling blocks to consider include an injury impeding Lorenzo Mata’s playability, as well as recent questions regarding...

UCLA super soph guards Arron Afflalo and Jordan Farmar both declared for the NBA draft yesterday. They will not hire agents however and will be able to return to the team next season, as they are just testing the NBA waters and want to see where they would be drafted. They will hold individual workouts for scouts and GMs in May and will have until June 18th to withdraw their names from the draft.

Tonight at Pauley Pavillion the UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans will take their rivalry from the gridiron to the hardwood. While some may say this version doesn't have the same intensity as in years past or that of the football game, it is a game that is of huge importance to both teams. No. 18 UCLA (14-3; 4-2), despite injury issues, is off to its best start in head coach Ben Howland's three years. The Trojans (12-5; 3-3) under first year head coach Tim Floyd, have already matched the number of victories from last season and earlier matched their record for consecutive wins with nine.

We have been reading a lot of opinions about the UCLA football season, some good and some not so favorable. Let us go on the record as saying that we believe coach Karl Dorrell has done a good job. Now, that doesn’t mean we’re putting him up there with former Bruin head coach and College Hall of Famer Terry Donahue, but we would like to see a little more love given to a team that is currently 9-1 and went from unranked to a top 10 team (before the horrendous loss to Arizona, no we have NOT let that one go). We have even seen people saying that he needs a win against USC to save his job.

5 Reasons You Will LOVE the Bruins This Season

The loss suddenly has Bruins fans freaked out that they won't be dancing when the NCAA Tournament Selection Committe draws up its brackets on Sunday.

USC fans should be jumping for joy.
