I've always been intrigued by other "best of" lists, but this year I decided to take it to a whole new level. I e-mailed a handful of bands that I've seen this past year in order to unearth what exactly captivated them in '07. As music listeners, it is our duty to take a keen interest in our favorite musician's influences. After all, they rocked our little world, might as well see what rocked their little world. Therefore, this is an act of paying it forward to those hardworking, underpaid musicians who truly made a difference within the music scene this year.

Artist: Beirut Album: The Flying Club Cup Label: Ba Da Bing Records Release Date: 10/09/07 Listen to the track "A Sunday Smile": Beirut is the brainshild of the oft-blogged travelling wunderkind 21-yr old Zach Condon. Whereas Beirut's debut release, Gulag Orkestar, was an obtuse and idealized interpretation of Balkan music, this new release is Zach's take on the music of Parisian street minstrels. With multiple vocal and string tracks, in addition to the expected accordion...

Concert review of Beirut at The Avalon.

Beirut - "In the Mausoleum" from The Flying Club Cup Instead of playing in someone's apartment (as seen above) they're going to play at your favorite record store (as you will see tonight at 6:30pm). Called a variety of things from Blogrock (because sites such as Stereogum and Pitchfork "discovered" them before the MSM did) to "the poor man's Arcade Fire" (because clearly any band that has the audacity to have a violinist, interesting...

The last time we caught up with Wounded Cougar they were also at Safari Sam's where they play tonight. Singer dude had on these skin tight pants that were showing us everything (yet we still had to squint), there was one guitarist with a beard in a cheesy leather 70s jacket that was unzipped, another guitarist looked like he had just done some serious hall monitoring - but best of all was a dude in a scary halloween mask playing lead cow bell. All the songs were funny, rockin, if not a total metal meltdown, played with more professionalism than youd expect from a group of people who look like they work at a costume store and jam after hours - oh they backup Beck as their real job? - same diff. The Willowz, Wounded Cougar, Bedtime for Toys @ Safari Sam's

Don't get me wrong, I love Beirut, but last Thursday I was lucky enough to be invited by a friend at Harmonia Mundi to the pre-screening of GYPSY CARAVAN...When The Road Bends. Written and directed by Jasmine Dellal of Little Dust Productions, the film is a documentary about five bands that play different kinds of Gypsy music, who united for a highly successful 6-week tour across North America. Descendents of the Roma, a group that migrated from Northwestern India around 1050, Gypsies are now spread over the Balkan peninsula, the Americas, the former Soviet Union, Western Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

Compton gangsta rap is #1, sweet girl harp is #2. We can't wait for that mash-up.

Ten days before Halloween and so many killer shows to choose from tonight. Clearly the obvious choice for the season would be dressing up as Eddie and going to the Maiden show. Imagine that parking lot scene. Sun Ra Arkestra, Money Mark, Watts Prophets @ Arthur Nights, Palace Theatre Bob Dylan @ Long Beach Arena Iron Maiden @ Irvine Meadows Rancid @ Henry Fonda The Decemberists @ Wiltern Meshell Ndegeocello @ Temple Bar Lucinda...

Lily, above, from Britain, is in the wrong place at the wrong time. She's stuck in Lebanon in the middle of a violent conflict. But she doesn't have it half as bad as nine-year-old Noureddine Issa, who has less than a week's supply of medicine, which he literally cannot live without.

Beirut Gulag Orkestar (Bada Bing) – Beirut is a 19 year-old kid from Albuquerque who has the full attention of the blogosphere and other tastemakers. He worked with Jeremy Barnes from Neutral Milk Hotel so the comparisons to that band are prevalent but ultimately unfair. There aren’t any guitars on the record but there are glockenspiels, ukuleles and clarinets. Download “from Italy
