LAst Night's Action: Angels Drop The Ball

LAst Night's Action: Angels Drop The Ball

Rangers 8, Angels 7 - Call it an emotional let-down. Call it a hangover. Call it whatever you want. The Angels lost when they should have been pushing even harder for home field advantage in the playoffs. Ervin Santana had a lousy start, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits in 5 innings. The loss left the Halos tied with Boston and Cleveland for best record in the AL. Beckham Watch - Paging Dr. Beckham.... more ›

LAst Night's Action: On Second Thought

LAst Night's Action: On Second Thought

Dodgers 10, Houston 2 - Los Angeles has been consistently inconsistent since the All Star break, and didn't show true dominance until going on the road. Chad Billingsly improved to 7-0 with a complete game, and even held the Astros scoreless until the final out. The Dodgers also looked good at the plate, with 3 RBIs from both Luis Gonzalez and James Loney. Jeff Kent (who scored on a wild pitch) had four hits before... more ›

Bent Over Beckham

Bent Over Beckham

I'm not impressed by Beckhamania. Sure, I'm excited about David Beckham's arrival. He's a world class icon coming to compete in our backyard. I planned my Saturday around his first match in a Galaxy uniform, despite the fact that it's just a friendly in an obscure tournament during the MLS All Star break. I embedded a semi-regular "Beckham Watch" in our "LAst Night's Action" segments and I've posted highlight videos of his greatest plays. Beckham... more ›

LAst Night's Action: 10,001 Reasons LA Is Better Than Philly

LAst Night's Action: 10,001 Reasons LA Is Better Than Philly

Dodgers 10, Phillies 3 - Imagine how good the Dodgers would be if Jason Schmidt were healthy. On Monday it was another All Star, Brad Penny, who notched his 11th win of the season and gave the Blue Crew their 5th in a row. Jeff Kent and Matt Kemp each contributed a three-run shot. The Phillies trailed by as many as nine en-route to their MLB leading 10,001st franchise loss. Beckham Watch - There's drama... more ›

LAst Night's Action: None, Really

Beckham Watch - The British are coming! The British are coming! Wait! The British are here! And they're drop dead sexy. Tonight's Action - Games are back! After a longer All Star break than most, the Angels will welcome the Texas Rangers at 7:05pm. Ten minutes later, the Dodgers will get underway in San Francisco. The Blue Crew joins three players (Martin, Penny, and Saito) who were already in town for the All Star game.... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Playing The Dozens

LAst Night's Action: Playing The Dozens

Dodgers 9, Marlins 3 - The Dodgers took out their slump frustrations on the Marlins, avoiding what would have been the first ever sweep by the Fish in Dodger Stadium. Russell Martin put on a clinic in the final game before the All Star break, reaching home on all three of his plate appearances. He smashed a two run homer in the first, singled and scored a run in the second, and notched his third... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Avengers, WWE Bring Firepower

Dodgers 5, Mets 3 - New York took a first inning lead on a pair of RBI singles including one by former Dodger slugger Shawn Green. They added another run in the fourth, but Los Angeles tied it up in the bottom of the frame with a pair of their own. They took the lead for good in the sixth thanks to a Carlos Beltran error. Randy Wolf is now tied for most wins in... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Three Away

LAst Night's Action: Three Away

Ducks 3, Senators 2 - Do you believe in miracles? We're almost there. Sunny, surf-city-adjacent Anaheim drew another step closer to Lord Stanley's trophy by beating Ottawa (a real, honest-to-goodness Canadian team) in game one of the NHL finals. The Senators managed only 20 shots on goal, but connected on one of their three in the first period. Anaheim equaled before intermission, but lost the lead again in the second. The third was all Ducks,... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Angels Blast Indians

LAst Night's Action: Angels Blast Indians

Angels 8, Indians 0 - Anaheim's anemic offense finally looked hungry with a run total matching their previous three games combined. They scored eight against Cleveland, five coming in just one inning. Gary Matthews Jr. smacked a three-run homer in the third inning outburst and Jose Molina stole home in the next frame. Kelvim Escobar pitched a complete game shutout, notching seven strikeouts and giving up no walks. The Angels are now off to Texas... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Big Games Coming Up

LAst Night's Action: Big Games Coming Up

Tigers 9, Angels 5 - Mike Maroth threw 105 pitches over just 4 and 2/3 innings, giving up seven hits, five walks, and three runs (two earned). He left the game with the bases loaded. Yet the only reason he didn't earn the win is that he didn't pitch the minimum five innings required of starters. Despite his ugly stats, Detroit still won thanks to a barrage of seven runs in the first two innings.... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Clips Cut Short

LAst Night's Action: Clips Cut Short

Hornets 86, Clippers 83 - Sports fans talk about "meaningless games" towards the end of the regular season. Those are contests held after a team is already in or out of the playoffs and seeding isn't a major issue. It's a common indicator of an exciting team in baseball. In this year's NBA playoff chase, the Clippers didn't play a single meaningless game. They did play roughly one meaningless quarter. Despite taking a solid lead... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Cleveland Indians of Milwaukee

LAst Night's Action: Cleveland Indians of Milwaukee

Indians 7, Angels 6 - If you haven't been glued to ESPN or the Weather Channel, you might not have noticed that snow postponed the Indian's first home series. Getting desperate for a balmier climate, they opted to play their next set in Wisconsin. You could guess there would be some great signs in a game played in Milwaukee between Los Angeles and Cleveland. Things turned out pretty well for the quasi-home crowd. The teams... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Farmar Sets Record

LAst Night's Action: Farmar Sets Record

Lakers 126, Kings 103 - Kobe doesn't have to score big to win big. Dishing out 13 assits to go with 19 points, he led the Lakers to a commanding victory over Sacramento. Los Angeles had six players in double digits and shot a whopping 61.7% from the floor. Maurice Evans led the way with 21. Jordan Farmar set a new record by playing in the development league in the afternoon, then being recalled and... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Test Bandwagon Fans

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Test Bandwagon Fans

Trailblazers 112, Lakers 108 - When your best player wins the All Star MVP award and a guy from the bench scores 23, things should be clicking. Instead, the Lakers lost their sixth in a row. This is the longest loosing streak in Phil Jackson's career. When he joined the Lakers in 1999 there was a distant memory of a five game loosing streak with the Bulls. He added another five game streak last season.... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Fat Men = LA Kryptonite

LAst Night's Action: Fat Men = LA Kryptonite

Pistons 92, Clippers 74 - The Clippers just want to go home. They wrapped a 7 game road trip with their fifth loss, this one at the hands of a rejuvinated Detroit squad. The Pistons are 11-2 since signing local college star Chris Webber, who had a game-high 19 points and nine rebounds in the game. Los Angeles shot just .324 from the field and was led by Cuttino Mobley with 17. The Clippers haven't... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Ducks Seeing Stars

LAst Night's Action: Ducks Seeing Stars

Stars 1, Ducks 0 - Rookie goalie Mike Smith blocked 32 shots for Dallas and didn't allow a goal in six power plays, leading the Stars to a tight win against their division rival. The game featured a fight after just 35 seconds, resulting in a couple 5 minute penalties and another classic photo for LAist. Anaheim's wheels started to fall off just before the All Star break, and the team has spiraled to 3-6-1... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Looking Elsewhere

LAst Night's Action: Looking Elsewhere

Raptors 96, Lakers 92 - Chris Bosh won the battle of possible MVP candidates with 29 points to Kobe's 25. The four point difference equaled the margin in the game. The Lakers have lost two in a row and are 3-4 on their road trip with a visit to the Cavs and another MVP candidate -- LeBron James -- on Sunday. Clippers 90, 76ers 89 - The Clippers got their first win in Philadelphia in... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Slow Night

LAst Night's Action: Slow Night

Kazakhstan 90, World 1 - Borat isn't the only phenom from Kazakhstan. The nation's Olympic ice hockey team has won their last two games by a combined score of 90-1. That's no typo. UCLA 4, UCLA 3, um, 4, yeah, 4 - According to a school press release, "UCLA was selected third in the Pac-10 Conference's preseason baseball coaches poll." Except they were really ranked fourth, as both the headline and complete rankings indicate in... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Duck Flambe

LAst Night's Action: Duck Flambe

Flames 3, Ducks 2 - It's safe to say the Ducks didn't waddle into the All-Star break. They fell flat on their bill. After loosing five in a row and 9 of 11, it's a miracle that they still lead the division. While they had one of the greatest season starts in NHL history, their goose was cooked by a string of key injuries. Against Calgary, they quickly fell behind and were trailing 3-0... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Local Teams Suffer Vengeance

LAst Night's Action: Local Teams Suffer Vengeance

Mavericks 114, Lakers 95 - Coming into the game, Dallas had won 18 of their last 19. The loss? Lakers. The revenge? Resounding. The Mavericks were up by as many as 28 and got double digit performances from six players. They did just about everything, including performing the national anthem before the game. Dallas is midway through the season and holds the best record in the league. They look to exact more revenge on Sunday... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Drop Balls, Cake. Still Win.

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Drop Balls, Cake. Still Win.

Lakers 100, Spurs 96 - The Lakers opened a three game road trip by surviving a late San Antonio rally. Both teams suffered from ball control issues. The Lakers dropped the rock 17 times (7 by Kobe), and the home team had 19 turnovers resulting in 25 points. Before the game, Kobe threw a lot of cliches at the press about getting back to basics. While the turnovers didn't live up to the expectations,... more ›

LAst Night's Action: "I'd Kick David Beckham's Ass"

LAst Night's Action: "I'd Kick David Beckham's Ass"

Lakers 124, Heat 118, OT - Unlike the Golden Globe acceptance speeches, nobody was upset when this went a little long. Boasting a budding rivalry that didn't even need Shaq or Pat Riley, the Lakers survived the Heat in a game featuring plenty of lead changes and ties. Dwayne Wade had a game high 35, but it wasn't enough against a Lakers squad that spread the ball around (seven players scored in double digits). The team shot 14-for-25 from beyond the arc with five from Smush Parker and four from Brian Cook. Miami was just 9-for-26 from deep. more ›
