HBO is giving the green light to yet another comedy, this one starring Laura Dern as a woman whose spiritual awakening wreaks havoc on her home and work life. We've loved Laura Dern since we first saw her in Blue Velvet and her hilarious portrayal of Floridian harpy Katherine Harris in HBO's "Recount" last year contributed to landing this series.

If you are already familiar with the music of Os Mutantes, the Brazilian Tropicalia band, you will be very pleased to know that Sérgio Dias Baptista has again unleashed his eclectic sensibilities in sound, instrumentation, music and themes to produce an album, Mutantes' first new music in 35 years, that fits like a velvet glove around the throat of today's cultural, political and economic necrophilia. And if you aren't, imagine an alternate universe in which Devendra Banhart, Frank Zappa and Tom Waits join Sérgio Mendes for a drink, then invite Sinead O'Connor and Lani Hall over to join them, and they decide to write music that will make everyone want to dance while they paint murals representing peace, love and justice on the government buildings. Something like that, anyway.

Tonight, as always, local multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire Jon Brion (LAist Interview, #2, Review) will be jamming with friends at the Largo at the Coronet. Legendary Tacoma-based garage rockers the Sonics will be headlining the Echo with none other than Costa Mesa-bred rockers Japanese Motors in tow. And, lastly, Charlotte's own prolific indie pop singer-songwriter Benji Hughes is poised to grace Spaceland with Beck bassist B.R.A.M. for this year's Sunset Junction Pre-Party. But we strongly suggest heading over to the El Rey Theatre to catch San Francisco-based alt pop act Girls, who will be kicking things off for Welsh pop band Los Campesinos! LAist favorites Ramona Falls, a splinter of Portland-based indie rockers Menomena, will also be performing.

            

Sunday night Beck opened in the brand spanking new Club Nokia. Before I launch into the review of Mr. Hansen, I would like to say a few words to the owners of this new club. Firstly I would like to congratulate you on your design. You make a rather large club (housing 2,300 people) feel small and intimate. There is not a bad seat in the house. Also the sound quality is amazingly good. But in order to make the club a bastion of Los Angeles rock music you should do the following. (Club and show review continues below photo gallery)

L.A.'s native son, Beck, headlines at Nokia Theatre Club Nokia. The alternative/indie rock star closes out his U.S and Canada tour in support of his latest CD Modern Guilt. Coincidently, the release of Modern Guilt also marks the end of Beck's contract with DGC Records and it might be some time before he puts out a new release. 7 pm // Nokia Theatre at L.A. Tonight hometown hero Beck will be playing his second and final night at the virginal Club Nokia. As Buzzbands blogger Kevin Bronson tweeted early last night, "Club Nokia's *posh* -- nicer even than finding free street parking 5 blocks away." Memphis-based punk rocker Jay Reatard will be opening the show this time around. The crazy garage rock outfit known as King Khan & the BBQ Show will be stopping by the Echo with Seattle's the Dutchess & the Duke. LA locals The Monolators will be continuing their Monday Night Residency at the hole-and-corner Pehrspace. And, lastly, our personal favorites the Western States Motel (LAist Review, Interview) will be doing the same at Spaceland with Swedish indie rockers the Marching Band, who are scheduled to open the month-long residency. We've heard great things about the band, so head on over to Silverlake to catch them!

Tonight we've got our fair share of shows, but nothing extraordinary. Legendary English rock band the Who will be playing their second and final night at the Nokia Theatre in Downtown. Much to our surprise, NY-based hip hop group Onyx will be playing a reunion show at the Echoplex. And local folk singer/song-writer Charlie Wadhams will be kicking off the first night of a month-long Sunday Residency at Tangier. But we recommend stopping by Club Nokia, which just opened its doors earlier this month, to catch LA mainstay Beck (LAist Review, #2) in all his glory. And for those of you who are still on the fence, Jenny Lewis (LAist Review) is also slated to open the show.

                      

Last Thursday, Rilo Kiley frontwoman and Silver Lake "Pioneer Woman" Jenny Lewis (MySpace) returned to Southern California, headlining at The Orpheum Theatre with support from openers Pierre de Reeder (MySpace) and the recently-reunited Beachwood Sparks (MySpace). It was the second-to-last stop on Lewis' Tour, which began in mid-September at Spaceland (MySpace) -- see reviews at Web In Front and Classical Geek Theatre -- and The Echo (MySpace).

        

Silver Lake's favorite son, Beck Hansen, returned to Los Angeles on Saturday night for a one night engagement at the Hollywood Bowl (9/20/08). In his largest, hometown-headlining gig, Beck took a decidedly different approach to his performance -- rather than relying on the gimmicks and theatrics of previous tours, he put the music on display.

Now in its tenth year, the Lobster Festival at the Port of Los Angeles offers a mouthwatering array of not only food but local LA bands as well—most notably the Henry Clay People, Weather Underground and Olive Future. The music definitely overshadows the food this time around. And the Smell, in all of its drab glory, will be hosting LA-based experimental artist BARR and San Diego's Crocodiles, who are best known as the phoenix that rose from ashes of TPTBUTET and the Prayers. (Yes, that is in fact Kristen Gundred of Grand Ole Party's hubby.) However, the Hollywood Bowl is hosting what could easily be the best lineup to come through Los Angeles this entire year. While Brooklyn-based MGMT may be old news in Williamsburg, the buzz continues to shroud them here. The formidable and youthful band of bohemians are slated to open the extravaganza with epoch-making psychedelic pop, followed by Austin-based indie rock mainstays Spoon. And lastly, but certainly not least as far as we're concerned, hometown hero Beck will be wowing the audience, sampling tracks from his rather expansive catalog. The mere possibility of hearing anything off of 1996's Odelay excites us. But for your sake and our mental well-being, please, watch out for those bellicose "security" guards!

Beck, who tends to throw secret and unannounced (but somehow always announced) warm-up shows in smaller Silver Lake venues might be playing Spaceland on Thursday, September 18. A comment left on a LosAnjealous post hints that a special guest "might be a warm up show for beck. He is playing street scene and the bowl that weekend."

Update: Bad news. "Due to illness, this evening's Beck performance at the Echoplex has been cancelled.. Tickets will be refunded through Ticketweb."

Apparently Beck snuck into The Echo last night for a second secret show (first time caught on video). "Nobody on Wednesday’s regular bill seemed to mind that Beck crashed the party. It was the EP release show for singer-songwriter Daniel Ahearn’s 'Pray for Me by Name.' Once he got started, Ahearn (a familiar face in the venue since he pays some of his bills by tending bar at the Echo) thanked the man who preceded him onstage … with a wink," write Kevin Bronson on Soundboard. "'Good local artist,' Ahearn said. 'I think he’s going places.'”

One week after mysteriously canceling his gig at the Echo, Beck and his brand new band appeared undercover and treated a full house of 300+ to an hour-long set of oldies, goodies, and tunes which remain unreleased. And no, Danger Mouse did not make an appearance....

Just announced by the Hollywood Bowl, Beck is now confirmed to play the Bowl on September 20. This will be his debut appearance as a headliner at the venue.

Elvis Costello and The Attractions essential 1978 record This Year’s Model was re-released for the twenty-third time earlier this week as a deluxe 2-CD set. This year’s model of This Year’s Model includes a bevy of previously released bonus tracks, and a previously unreleased live concert.

The community of Watts seems to be undergoing a shift in atmosphere, reports the Daily News, as the area's gang violence has been decreasing, thanks in part to the Watts Gang Task Force. In terms of statistics, homicides were halved last year from the year before--11 in 2007 as compared to the 24 in 2006, and 2007 saw "a three-month stretch without a single slaying. Gang homicides for the approximately 1-square-mile home to an estimated 2,000 gangsters dropped from 13 in 2006 to eight last year." The larger area, known as the South Bureau, which includes 35,000 Watts residents, also saw a marked decrease in homicides from 2006 to last year.

The Malibu fire is now 25% contained. At least 35 structures have been destroyed and thousands were forced to flee as wind whipped flames ravaged the coastal town. The last time we caught up with Wounded Cougar they were also at Safari Sam's where they play tonight. Singer dude had on these skin tight pants that were showing us everything (yet we still had to squint), there was one guitarist with a beard in a cheesy leather 70s jacket that was unzipped, another guitarist looked like he had just done some serious hall monitoring - but best of all was a dude in a scary halloween mask playing lead cow bell. All the songs were funny, rockin, if not a total metal meltdown, played with more professionalism than youd expect from a group of people who look like they work at a costume store and jam after hours - oh they backup Beck as their real job? - same diff.
