Coachella: Day Two 04/17/10

Coachella: Day Two 04/17/10

With so many bands playing, the breadth of Coachella’s line-up can be a curse as well as a blessing. It forces the fans to make a choice between potentially up to 5 acts they may all love. Unfortunately, I have been faced with decisions such as Them Crooked Vultures or Grizzly Bear, Dead Weather/MGMT or Muse, and on Sunday Phoenix/Thom Yorke or Pavement/Gorillaz. Most of these decisions have essentially been an old favorite vs. a curious desire to see a different band. So far, the old favorites are up 2-0. more ›

Just announced: Vampire Weekend will make their Hollywood Bowl debut on September 26th, headlining a show that will be opened by Beach House and The Very Best, both of which will also make their bow on the famed Bowl stage. Touring in support of their successful sophomore effort Contra, Vampire Weekend joins the ranks of several other high-profile alt-rock outfits who will make a stop at the Bowl this season. Tickets for this performance will go on sale on May 2nd online and at the Bowl Box Office, and will be available by phone on May 11th (if there's any left!). Post-Coachella, Twitter has been abuzz with people hoping Muse will land at the Bowl. Who would you like to see there this summer? more ›

Darker My Love's Top Ten of 2008

Darker My Love's Top Ten of 2008

December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008. more ›

Tonight In Rock: Beach House, Rancid, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip

Tonight In Rock: Beach House, Rancid, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip

Tonight LA is bereft of noteworthy shows. Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, an Essex-based collaborative effort between Dan Stephens and David Meads respectively, will be doling out madcaps beats, flows and breaks at the Echo. If you're feeling brazen, then we recommend heading out to Long Beach to catch the Western States Motel at the Prospector. It'll surely be worth the drive. But for those who want to see a great show close to home, we suggest Beach House at Spaceland. The Baltimore-bred duo—who are generally characterized for their drone of hollow lo-fi drums, rich, almost baritone vocals, and jangly organs—will leave you in a wintry, angelic stupor. more ›
