Do Not Tap That - Water Contaminated With Rocket Fuel Chemicals In Barstow [Updated]
According to LA Now, Barstow residents were warned on Friday not to drink local tap water, as recent tests show it may be contaminated with high levels of perchlorate, "an inorganic chemical found in rocket propellant, fireworks, explosives, flares, matches and industrial byproducts," that, "interferes with the human thyroid gland, affecting hormones as well as prenatal growth during pregnancies."
'Improvised Nuclear Device' Subject of FBI, Local Police Training in L.A., Burbank
The FBI and other local agencies are conducting a three-day training exercise beginning today and are letting the public know, hoping to "prevent unnecessary concern," according to the LAPD. Today's training will test those agencies on their "ability to respond to a terrorist attack involving an improvised nuclear device" and will mostly occur in Los Angeles, Burbank and far-out Barstow (yeah, sounds like "24").
Number of Power Outages Dwindle before the Worst of the Storm
Utility crews across Southern California have been working tirelessly to return power to customers throughout these three storms. The L.A. Department of Water reported 1,700 outages at 10 a.m., half the amount reported earlier in the morning.
Fourth 3.0+ Earthquake Strikes Southern California
We may have not been feeling them directly here in Los Angeles, but the ground is shaking somewhat east of us. Since Saturday evening, three earthquakes have rattled the Inland Empire, first in Riverside County (3.3), again this morning east of Temecula (3.6) and then this afternoon more northward in San Bernardino County (4.6). Yesterday, there was a 4.3 magnitude quake near San Nicolas Island, which is one of two Channel Islands controlled by the Military. 3.0 and 4.0 magnitude quakes are categorized as "minor" and "light," respectively.
