LAst Night's Action: Kings Break Through to Second Round

LAst Night's Action: Kings Break Through to Second Round

LA Kings defeat Vancouver Canucks 2-1 (OT). After losing the last two regular season games to the San Jose Sharks by choking two-goal leads in the third period, there didn't seem to be much hope for this team. It seemed as if the fire went out as soon as they clinched a playoff berth despite having the chance of being the 3-seed. And that's almost never a good omen for a playoff bound team. But after storming out of the gate winning the first two games in Vancouver, anything could happen. more ›

LAst Night's Action: No Revenge for the Lakers against the Spurs

LAst Night's Action: No Revenge for the Lakers against the Spurs

San Antonio Spurs defeat LA Lakers 121-97. No defense, no win. In Kobe Bryant's return after sitting out seven games with a shin injury, the Lakers supposedly bolstered defense was a sieve to the Spurs. Bryant had 18 points in his return while Andrew Bynum had 17 points and only two rebounds. In fact the Spurs out-rebounded the Lakers 42-29. more ›

Dodgers Laugh Away on Fan Appreciation Day

Dodgers Laugh Away on Fan Appreciation Day

This was the kind of game it was for the Pittsburgh Pirates in their 15-1 loss to the Dodgers. In the first inning centerfielder Andrew McCutchen looked at the ball that came off Matt Kemp’s bat. He took a couple of steps back towards the wall as the ball was beginning its ascent into the hazy yet bright sky. As he continued to look at the trajectory, he stopped in his tracks realizing the futility of it and just went back to his position in centerfield. more ›

How Do You Solve a Problem Like UCLA?

It really is a shame. The Rose Bowl is a gorgeous place to catch a football game. Set in amongst the hills in Pasadena, knowing the history of the stadium, it is breathtaking. more ›

James Loney Dots the Dodgers' Victory

James Loney Dots the Dodgers' Victory

With the Pittsburgh Pirates in town for what are essentially meaningless games, it was amazing the Dodgers drew 41,148 to the park. But with the confluence of fireworks night, Star Wars night, singles night and the start of the Hello Kitty promotion for the weekend, the astonishment was downgraded to a mere nod of respect to the promotions department. While the game might have dragged on, at least the crowd got a 7-2 Dodger win out of it. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Explode in Rainy Denver

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Explode in Rainy Denver

LA Dodgers defeat Colorado Rockies 8-2. No Andre Ethier, no problems for the Dodgers in Coors Field. Out of the lineup with an infected big toe, the Dodgers used Tony Gwynn, Jr., Justin Sellers and Aaron Miles ahead of MVP candidate Matt Kemp in the cleanup spot. It wasn’t a lineup that inspired a lot of confidence. more ›

Dodgers Avoid Disaster in Victory over Nationals

Dodgers Avoid Disaster in Victory over Nationals

The game of baseball never fails to amaze and wonder those who follow the game. Part of the appeal of going to a game is the hope of seeing something unseen. While Chad Billingsley’s outing against the Washington Nationals might not qualify as something unprecedented, it was still quite a wonder to see him and the team wriggle from the potential catastrophe and defeat the Nationals 3-1. more ›

Lilly's and Furcal's Bats Power Dodgers' Victory

Lilly's and Furcal's Bats Power Dodgers' Victory

On a night when the Dodgers celebrated Don Drysdale’s 75th birthday, it was the offense that bailed out the Dodgers in their 7-6 victory over the Washington Nationals. Specifically it was the struggling Rafael Furcal who bailed the Dodgers out. more ›

Dodgers Pack No Punch against Nationals

Dodgers Pack No Punch against Nationals

If I were Dodgers’ starter Hiroki Kuroda, I’d waive my no-trade clause to the first contender that wanted me and high-tail it out of Dodger Stadium after getting tagged for the Dodgers’ 7-2 loss to the Washington Nationals. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Angels Swept By Lowly Orioles

LAst Night's Action: Angels Swept By Lowly Orioles

Baltimore Orioles defeat LA Angels 5-4. For the first time since 2003 the Angels were swept by the Baltimore Orioles. Angels’ starter Dan Haren was pitching a shutout until the sixth inning when he gave up a leadoff homer to Nick Markakis. The Orioles would score once more in the sixth on Felix Pie’s single and twice in the seventh. The Angels woke up in the eighth to tie the game at 4-4, but Cesar Izturis walked off with a single that brought in Julio Lugo for the winning run. The Angels will tuck their tails between their legs and head off to Detroit for a three-game series. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Lose Again, Angels Win Again

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Lose Again, Angels Win Again

LA Angels defeat Baltimore Orioles 8-5. The Angels used the long ball to beat the Orioles in the final game of their four-game series. Vladimir Guerrero with homers in the sixth inning with one on and in the seventh inning with two on notched his 38th multi-homer game in his career. Maicer Izturis also homered in the sixth inning to help give starting pitcher Ervin Santana the victory. Santana went six innings giving up three runs on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts. While Darren Oliver pitched two innings of perfect ball, Jose Arredondo came in the ninth inning with an 8-3 lead and gave up a homer to Melvin Mora after walking Matt Wieters with one out. After getting Ty Wigginton to fly out, Arredondo gave up a triple to pinch hitter Nolan Reimold. Manager Mike Scioscia having seen enough brought in closer Brian Fuentes to get the final out and the save. The Angels take three of four games in the series and now go to Cleveland. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers, Angels Prevail

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers, Angels Prevail

LA Dodgers defeat San Francisco Giants 5-3. In the past when the Dodgers would lose a stretch of games they could look to Brad Penny or Derek Lowe and be pretty assured they would win. Chad Billingsley is starting to look like that this season for the Dodgers despite not getting a decision in his 7 1/3 innings pitched. The Giants would score the game tying run in the eighth inning on a bases loaded walk with Jonathan Broxton pitching to deny Bills the win. But true to form the Dodgers MVPs came through in the ninth inning with Manny Ramirez doubling, taking third on a wild pitch and scoring after Russell Martin struck out on an Andre Ethier double. Matt Kemp would emerge from his slump to hit a triple to right field scoring Ethier for the insurance run. Will Ohman would get the save pitching a perfect ninth. As Vin Scully pointed out with nine hits, nine walks and two errors the Dodgers should have scored more runs. But a win is a win. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Strange Happenings Down the Arch

LAst Night's Action: Strange Happenings Down the Arch

St. Louis Cardinals defeat LA Dodgers 9-6. Four words: Albert Pujols grand slam. That effectively shut the door on the Dodgers. Derek Lowe made his shortest outing of the season (3 1/3 innings) while giving up the most hits and runs of the season (13 hits and eight runs). In the eighth inning with Jeff Kent on deck to pinch hit, the PA announcer announced Mark Sweeney would be the pinch hitter. Joe Torre would argue to no avail. Kent would bat for Sweeney who "batted" for Pablo Ozuna. Kent would strike out, and the Dodgers would complete the game under protest. In the unlikely event the protest is upheld, the game won't necessarily be restarted at the point of protest if the league decides the screw up didn't affect the Dodger's chances of winning the game. So there you have it. more ›

LAst Night's Action: BREAKING NEWS!!!!!

LAst Night's Action: BREAKING NEWS!!!!!

St. Louis Cardinals defeat LA Dodgers 6-4 (11 innings). ANDRUW JONES HIT A HOME RUN! He got things going in the top of the ninth with the Dodgers down 4-0 on the second pitch thrown by Cardinals reliever Ron Villone and took it over the left center bullpen. Closer Jason Isringhausen immediately came into the game, and Isringhausen was being Isringhausen by blowing the save and allowing the Dodgers to tie the game 4-4. Manny Ramirez was 2-for-3 with two walks scoring once. But Ryan Ludwick showed why he was NL Player of the Week for last week by hitting a shot straight to center for the walk-off homer. The game was twice interrupted by rain delays. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Angels Back on Winning Track

LAst Night's Action: Angels Back on Winning Track

LA Angels defeat Baltimore Orioles 6-5. The Angels led the game 5-1 with two outs in the top of the ninth. What happens? Oh Francisco Rodriguez just blew the save (with help from a Mark Teix-error) to tie the game up 5-5. But the Angels came back in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded. Oriole's closer George Sherrill walked Chone Figgins with the walk off walk. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. The Angels are the first team in the majors to 70 wins. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Get All Jazzed Up

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Get All Jazzed Up

LA Lakers over Utah Jazz 109-98. MVP Kobe Bryant and the Lakers showed that a six-day layoff wouldn't decrease their intensity as they spanked the Jazz Sunday afternoon. Before the sold-out crowd at Staples, the Jazz looked gassed in the fourth quarter from having played six tough games against the Houston Rockets in the first round. The MVP scored 38 points and went to the free-throw line a playoff career high 23 times only missing his last two attempts. The one point of concern for the Lakers was their job on the defensive boards. Utah grabbed 25 offensive rebounds, and if the Lakers hope to make this another short series they need to box out better. The Lakers have now won five straight playoff games. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Prefer Their Coors Chilled

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Prefer Their Coors Chilled

LA Dodgers (16-13) defeat Colorado Rockies (11-18) 11-6. In a game where the wind chill was below freezing, the Dodgers took a while to thaw out eventually breaking the game open in the sixth inning with seven runs. Early MVP candidate Rafael Furcal hit an Earl Weaver in that inning and Blake DeWitt got a pinch-hit two-run single. Brad Penny (5-2) started off shakily walking three batters in the first two innings (two of which scored) but eventually regained his form giving up two more runs in five innings. Russell Martin had a highlight game at third base for the first six innings and moving back behind the plate for the final three innings. more ›

LAst Night's Action: Angel's Granny Sparks Victory

LAst Night's Action: Angel's Granny Sparks Victory

LA Angels defeat Cleveland Indians 9-5. Mike Napoli hits his first grand slam in the second inning to get things rolling for the Angels. They didn't need to rely on a closer this time. But I'm sorta pissed at them since because of them the Dodgers game was blacked out on MLB.tv. more ›

Let's Go Bowling

Let's Go Bowling

The Dodgers have a certain way of making me look like a complete asshole. Just when I proclaim that it would take a miracle for the Dodgers to make the postseason, the offense explodes as if some saintly being was guiding them in the outfield. You know, they should make a movie about that. Against the Phillies on Wednesday the Dodgers scored 15 runs in an obvious show of laziness since a horrible Texas... more ›
