Saturday marks five years of Avaland, the signature clubnight of historical nightspot, Avalon. This space has been a hotbed for music since 1927, and become a big player in global DJ culture this decade. Each Saturday night (and Sunday morning,) superjocks from the worlds of techno and house make good use of the venue's hard-to-get afterhours license. Booka Shade, Tiefschwarz, Sander Kleinenberg, and Steve Angello are all regulars. No wonder the UK's DJ Mag named it 40th in world’s best clubs. Saturday features techno-posterboy Steve Bug, as well as Adultnapper, Dan Berkson and James What, plus Avaland residents Droog. Doors open at 10 p.m. and shut at 8 a.m. Wow.

Blame pollution: 2008 was another banner year for troubled waters at our nation's beaches, according to the results of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) annual study. Although last year was a dry one, "aging and poorly designed sewage and stormwater systems hold much of the blame for beachwater pollution [and] stormwater runoff contributed to two-thirds of the closing/advisory days in which a contamination source was reported."

       

We've spent a bit of time on Catalina Island lately, enjoying the food and drink, checking out the "nightlife," or taking in its newest nature trail, but we thought we'd give you one more glimpse of the beautiful place, this time with a little romance in mind. Enjoy these serene black and white shots of Avalon.

       

Every time a flying fish popped out of the water, most all of the close-to 100 passengers on the boat began screaming in excitement last Friday night. That's because it's quite exhilarating to see a fish emerge from the water with its wings fluttering about as it tries to glide across the water before disappearing underneath. Some went as high as five feet and for a good few hundred feet in distance, but unfortunately none went as high or far as their ability is rumored to be.

                            

To a rousing success, last night the 2nd Annual Taste of Avalon kicked off the Flying Fish Festival for the weekend. Unlike the Taste of Chicago where restaurants set up booths in one central location, Avalon's taste has you going from restaurant to restaurant. And it works because the small city's downtown is about five blocks long, which makes the event a great way to experience the city.

From the Taste of Avalon to Peddle Boat Race to a parade featuring Huell Howser, the 2nd Annual Flying Fish Festival in Catalina Island's main city, Avalon, is ready to pack a punch over the next four days. It begins tomorrow with a variety of activities including the Taste of Avalon where restaurants gather in the middle of town and dole out $1 or cheaper samples of their best dishes.

       

There's something very different about hiking on the interior of Catalina Island, something you can't get on the plethora of trails immediately surrounding Los Angeles. It's the deafening sound of silence--that ever-present rumble of freeways we are so used to on the mainland is no where to be heard on Catalina, where this past weekend a new 37.2 mile cross-island trail opened to the public.

              

On a whim, we decided to check out Catalina Island's city of Avalon one afternoon this past weekend. It was a first for us (okay, for me) and upon returning to the mainland and talking to others, we found that Angelenos really don't take advantage of the resort island and all that it has to offer including hiking, bed and breakfasts, seeing historical sites (hey, the Cubs did spring training here back in the day!), parasaiing, scuba diving, whale watching, beach going, relaxation, etc. In fact, many natives to Southern California we spoke to admitted they had never been to the 76 square mile sized island.

While watching the Oscars at home in my bedroom, I got an email informing me that I was invited to Prince's Post-Oscar party. Me? The guy who was sitting in his room watching the Oscars in a sweaty t-shirt and shorts thanks to some much needed time at the gym was now going to be partying with Prince at his ultra-exclusive post-Oscar party.

Last year, Prince threw an ultra-exclusive invite-only post-Oscar bash that brought out big names like Stevie Wonder, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Javier Bardem and Eva Longoria. This year, the Purple one is opening the doors to his party to everyone.

Believe it or not, Southern California's San Clemente was once a sea serpent haven. The June 1934 issue of Esquire Magazine For Men featured an intriguing article by a Ralph Bandini who spoke quite openly of his two encounters with the San Clemente Monster. In his article "I Saw A Sea Monster," Bandini commented, "San Clemente Island is a lonely, wind-swept bit of rock and sand lying some fifty miles south of Los Angeles Harbor. It is little frequented except by fishermen. Its waters are lonely too...The Thing itself appears to like this remote bit of ocean - that windy channel between San Clemente and Santa Catalina."

              

When globetrotting electronic dance music DJs come to town the energy is rock-show thick. The tough, loud music. The sparkling visuals along side layers of multicolored flashing lights. The rabid crowd. These elements unite, and fans are delivered something special. Drew “Rukes” Ressler’s job is to capture that nocturnal magic.

Late-night techno trio Droog (Andrei, Brett and Justin) can be found at Avalon Hollywood where they hold it down Saturdays as well as at their various parties around town. Earlier this year they were the highlight of Beatportal’s LA Claims USA's Dance Music Crown.

During the UFO waves of the 1940s and '50s a new type of peculiar, possibly extraterrestrial or covert machine was mentioned, and often sighted in the murky oceans of the world. The USO, or Unidentified Submarine Object, just like the flying saucers and mystery airships of before, had begun to cause panic.

According to KFWB, the crash took place "on the west end of the island and caused a small fire that was quickly doused." The chopper hit the ground near the Banning House Lodge in Avalon. It is believed the the engine failed while flying over Isthmus cove. KNBC.com describes the incident as a crash or "hard landing."

Guy Garvey is a busy... um... guy. As the frontman for one of the UK's most critically acclaimed bands, Elbow, he and his bandmates are in the middle of their global tour's North American leg, which ends here in Los Angeles Friday night at the Avalon. They have a newly-released album, The Seldom Seen Kid (read the LAist CD review here). On top of this, Guy is still selecting songs for his weekly BBC Radio show, and raising awareness for his favorite cause.

Tomorrow is the finish up the AMGEN Tour of California in Pasadena. But before hitting the old money city, they're headed towards Santa Clarita this afternoon (where Six Flags Magic Mountain has decided to stay put). From 4 to 10 p.m. tonight “Rock the Bike,” a free outdoor cycling expo and music festival, will bring together an array of people following the stage 6 finish. Various bands will be playing and headlining act, the Gin Blossoms, will be on stage around 8 p.m. (of course, if it rains, who knows what will happen, this is an outdoor event). The tour itself is aired on the cable channel, VERSUS, at 2 p.m. today and tomorrow. For more check our TV weekend listings.

LA Weekly points us to some hot picks for tonight. About Girl in Coma: "Joan Jett knows a thing or two about rock & roll, and her latest protegees, Girl in a Coma, on her Blackheart label are one of the best and most interesting bands to come out of Texas in a long time," writes Falling James. They also play Alex's Bar in Long Beach tomorrow night. Also, Brian Wahl picks the "rare appearance" of Buddy Collette Big Band, who will be playing at the Terrace Court on the second level of Paseo Colorado at 8 p.m.

For a band of two 16-year-olds and one 17-year-old, Din Caliber has a huge sound that's quite exciting. And Linda Perry, record label owner/producer (credits include Gwen Stefani, Pink, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilara), has her eye on them. The home schooled trio practices four to five nights a week for four hours and has played the House of Blues and a few shows at the Whiskey A Go Go. Tonight they play the Knitting Factory on the Main Stage. Also of note tonight is the North Mississippi Allstars who mix punk, rock and down-home blues (it's quite lovely). They'll be sharing the stage tonight with the Drive-By Truckers at the Avalon.

Nothing says Hebrew like some good old (testament) Hip-Hop.

If you are employed in the entertainment industry in this town then it's likely that you have gotten paid at some point though Axium-Avalon Payroll services. Over the last 10 years they have been the payroll service for almost every job I have had. Including my current company.
